Title Complex automation of bloomeries.

Abstract The authors describe automation systems developed by
the Central Design Bureau of the plant "Elektroprivod"
and operating since April 1954. They demonstrate that
complex automation can be efficiently accomplished only
on a modern mechanized unit. They describe the automation
and modernization of the 1100 type bloomery and give de-
tails of the automation of the separate parts of the set.
One table' 12 detailed connection diagrams, charts and
oscillograms.

TITLE; The present state of evelopment of automated
electric drives

TEXT: Diagrams are given which show the relative number of
drives in various branches of the national economy of the USSR
and expected developments are described. New single-armature
rolling mill motors are being developed with outputs of
.10000-12000 h.p. with high maximum output and good dynamic
characteristics. Mercury-arc rectifiers are at present the main
type of controlled rectifiers for industrial drive. It is
proposed to manufacture sealed single-anode, grid-controlled
mercury-arc rectifiers for anode currents of 250-350 and 500 A,
including rectifiers with series connected valves and also
modernised pumped-mercury-arc rectifiers for currents up to

1000 A per anode. New static control systems for drives types
jNjij(UM'P) and (UIIZP) with OutPuts UP to 30 ki-I based on
magnetic amplifiers have been developed and introduced.
Amplifiers of up to 80 kVA per unit have been developed.
A number of new designs of automatic electric power generating
sets of packaged design have been developed and investigations
are being niade on industrial prototype computer-controllers for
automatic drives. Static systems with magnetic amplifiers have
been used in the development of various drive control systems
for metallurgy, mining, machine tool manufacture, paper machines,
and power station auxilliaries. An automatically controlled
drive has been developed in the metallurgical industry for a new

rectifiers with a total current of about 1 million amps have
been provided for non-reversing rolling mills. An ionic drive
is being introduced for reversing rolling mills including the

types (EXG-4 ) have been modernised by ut ilizing f or the
main drive d.c. generators controlled by power magnetic
amplifiers, which have repJaced t lire e -winding generators and
increased the output of the excavators. Direct current automatic
drives have been provided for diesel-electric iristaliations
type ll!-,'J(11DE) and have increased the output of mine winding
operations by a factor of 2-2.5 as compared with other
installations. Ionic rectifiers have begun to be used for mine
winders; industrial prototypes have been developed and
construct.ed for high speed reversing equipment used in conjunction
with ionic drives of multi-rope winders. For machine tools there
have been developed a series of d.c. drives supplied from power
magnetic amplifiers of o.6-6 kif output. Ferro-transistor
programmed digital computer control of machine tools has been
developed using step-by-step motors and hydraulic amplifiers.
A d.c. main drive system using silicon rectifiers of 50-100 kW
has been developed and partially introduced in wh7ich the rotor
speed is controlled by the field flux. An automatic drive system
with continuous programme control has been developed for

standard heavy horizontal milling machines, boring mills, and
lathes. A number of heavy machine tools are provided with.
controlled ionic drives. A multi-inotor drive with multi-
generator supply system and contactless tachogenerators has
been developed for paper machines, and has successfully passed
industrial tests. An electrical drive system has been
developed for a number of dry cargo.ships, river icebreakers,
and tugs. Future developments in drives are indicated.

TEXT- Temperature variation of magnetic amplifier characteristics
consists of two components, a parallel displacement of the volt-
ampere input-output characteristics and a change in the slope
(gain) of the latter. These variations can be corrected using a
temperature sensitive resistance (thermistor) and a special winding
such that ampere turns are introduced to compensate the equivalent
ampere turns due to the shift of the characteristic, Used as a
simple load, this corrects for the parallel displacement; used in
a feedback loop, this corrects for gain variations, L.S.Bessonov

TITLE: A contactless impulse generator

TEXT: The article gives suggestions for the design and showa -.he
experimental results of an investigation of the contastless pulse
ftnerator (CPG). The circuit diagram (Fig. 1) includes a heated
element PTS, whose working body is connected in the control cir.-
cuit, and the heat is connected in the winding of the contaciless
magnetic relay BMR. At zero eontrol current, the current flow~.ng
through the heater is a maximum (Fig. lb) and the working body of
the semi-conductor thermoresistance PTS is heated to a temperature

TITLE: A Contactless Magnetic Time Relay

TEXT: The present paper was read at the All-Union Conference on Magnetic
Elements in Automation, Telemechanics, and Computer Technique on November
29, 1957. The inertial properties 'of magnetic amplifiers are used for con-
tactless magnetic time relays. For this purpose, special measures are taken
to increase inertness. As the time characteristics of contactless magnetic
relays depend largely on the feedback coefficient, on the control and
displacement currents, and on the vay of connecting in the &-c coils, these
factors are used to increase the response time (Refs. 1-4)- In this connec-
tion, the author gives a brief description of a circuit diagram suggested
by V, No Tkachev and So V. Solntsev, which is shown in Fig. 2a, and of
papers by 1. B. Negnevitskiy and N. So Mikadze (Refs. 6, 8). Furthermore,
he' explains the circuit diagram of a contactiess magnetic time relay vith
a short circuit (Fig. 3). It is noted that, under certain conditions, such

a circuit diagram has a sufficiently stable response time. A table gives
the results of an experimental study of the stability of the response time
of ten relays. Figs- 4 - 6 reproduce the static characteristics of the time
relay shown in Fig. 3 for different voltages, different frequencies of the
feeding source, and different temperatures. Fig- 7 illustrates the depend-
once of the responue tima of the time relay on the control current and the
safety factor with an unchanged displacement current. Fig. 8 shows the de-
pendence of the response time on the displacement current, and Fig. 9 il- C.
lustrates the dependence of the response time on the control current for
different amounts of the resistance connected to the winding w In con-

ABSTRACT: One of the principal demands made on a toothed-gear drive with
small modulus is that within a certain range the transmission
ratio of the angular momenta im between the pinion (Y.) and the
driving gear (Mk) remains constant.

A simple apparatus is described which consists of two springs
with indicators and holders for the axes of the toothed-gear
drive under investigation, with which the mesh of the geara of
a clockwork can be checked and controlled.
The ratios measured are graphically represented, so that it is
well possible to draw a comparison between the properties of
