ABSTRACT: Minsk Factory for peinforced Concrete products manufactures
poles for street electric lighting, and sleepers for
narrow gauge railways (750 mm), using wire reinforcement.
These products are manufactured on 130 m long concreting
plant. The poles for street lighting were designed by
the Belorussian . Polytechnic Institute, Department of
Building Construction (Beloruaskiy politekhnicheskiy
institut, kafedra stroitelinykh konstruktsiy). The poles
are 9.4 m long, octagonal and hollow in cross section,
tapering towards the tops the bottom section is 34 am
and the top 16 am wide. The concrete used is of mark 400,
and the reinforcement consists of 42 wires of 2o6 mm
diameter. Tests carried out showed that strength and

shows tensioning of high tensile wires. The concrete,
in forms, is consolidated using internal vibrator 1-50.
Experience showed that for uniform curing the steam tubes
must be carried through the void of the pole to a depth
of at least 1.5 m. The curing lasts 20-24 houro.
The products are then cooled for 4 hours. 450 kg
of high quality cement is used per 1 M3 of concrete.
The water/cement ratio is 0 45:0 5 Consumption of
concrete per pole is 0.32 M~; f;r*the arm, 0.05 m3,
for the base 0.22 m3 ani for the foundation 1.64 m3,
making a total of 2.25 m The total consumption of
steel per pole is 46 kg. The sleepers were designed
by the Planning Institute, Belgiprotorf (Proyektnyy
institut Belgiprotorf). They are reinforced with
steel w~.res of 2.6 mm diameter. The concrete used is
of mark 500. The sleepers are cast in reinforced concrete
forms with special metal attachments forming seating for
the rail's saddle. When the concrete reaches 7UA of
the calculated strength (i.e. after 36-48 hours) the

lengths. The form is 150 ems long, 100 ems wide, and
is made from concrete mark 200. Five sleepers are cast in
each form. The factory can also produce prestressed
reinforced concrete hollow floor slabs. In this case the
consolidation is carried out by external vibrators, whereas
in the case of sleepers surface vibration is not sufficient
on account of the reinforcement and the timber divisions
in the form. In casting sleepers, therefore, vibrators
have to be situated at various heights and various angles
of inclination (5, 10 and 200). The cement used for
sleepers is of rapid-hardening type produced by Volkovysk
factory. 550 kg cement is used for 1 m3 of concrete.
Concrete testswwe carried out on 12 test cubes of
10 x 10 X 10 Cm. The first 3 cubes were tested before
the tensioning was released, the following 3 were tested
repeatedly on successive days; 3 were tested before
checking their strength, and the remaining 3 cubes were

TEXT: Ionic converters are generally used for increasing or con-
trolling the frequency of supply of cookers, induction heating set-
ups and other apparatus. Calculation of multiphase converters is
extremely complicated because in solving differential equations it
is necessary to find a large number of constants of integration.
A method is described for calculating the voltages in the units of
converters using quadratic matrices of the second degree. The methcd
gives an account of the application to a bridge ionic irrierter.
Formulas are given for phase potentials. /-Abstracter's note; Com-

The triple standard is distinguished from the simple su-
perposition of two standards that the distance between
the standards serve as an interference gap. The resol-
ving power of the triple stlandard is Lweater than that of
the simple one. A formula is given for the comparison of
the resolving power of a triple and single standard.
It is advisable to use the tricle standard to increase
the resolving power, when the technology of the electric
coatings restricts the resolving power of the simpzle stan-
dard. In view of the fact that the number of dielectric

TEXT: A spectrograph with crossed dispersions, based on the
optical scheme shown in Fig.1, designated as experimental model
CT3-1 (STE-1) is described. The apparatus was designed by
L.F. Belugin on the specifications worked out by V.K. Prokoflyev,
M.M. Kler and A.K. Rusanov. In the actual apparatus, the
photographic plate 13 is replaced by a cylindrically bent film,
which obviates the use of lens 12. The main advantages of this
spectrograph are its considerably increased aperture ratio; i.e.
speed, and small overall dimensions. The performance data are
summarised in Table 1. It is suggested that this type of optical
system would be particularly well employed in the quantum-meters,
where it would be an improvement on the present Paschen-Runge
system, by extending the range of the instrument further into the
UV region.

ABSTRACT: Measures are suggested for amending "Specifications on Overvoltage-
Portection of Rural Electrical installation s up to 35 k,, " endor s ed by the MSKh
SSSR. The recommendations are based an the following factors: low short-
circuit currents (tens, hundreds amperes), small phase angles between the
supply volt--ge and the short-circuit current, low rate of voltage recovery on
clearing the short, a little probability that a flashover can develop into a
sustained short, a high probability of short-circuit self -extinction, better
effectiveness of automatic reclosure. Experiments resulted in self -clearing

of short-circuits under the following conditions: (1) between horizontal wires
spaced at 0. 5-1. 5 m in 0. 14-0.46 sec, with currents 100-ZOO amp in 0. 14-0.87
sec, with currents 200-300 amp in 0.07-0.94 sec; (2) between vertical wires
spaced at 0. 5-1. 0 m, with currents 0-100 amp in 0. 11-0.49 sec, with 100-200
amp in 0. 42-0.88 sec, with 200-300 amp in 0. 44-1.05 sec; (3) in horizontal
and vertical protective spark gaps 15+(30-60) mm with 100-300 amp in
0. 21-1. 22 sec. Thus, in most cases the arc is broken in a time under I sec.
These fundamental simplifications of lightning -protection specifications are
suggested: using if possible valve-type lightning arresters having higher
breakdown voltages, lower nonlinearity, and lower carrying capacity, i. e.
cheaper types than conventional valve arresters. The operating minimum of
tube protectors should be lower than that of conventional types since rural net-
works often have still lower short-circuit currents. It is also recommended
that valve-type lightning arresters be replaced by protective gaps. Automatic-

reclosure equipment should be combined with high-.voltage fuses so that
selectivity is insured.. With small short-circuit currents, the protective
spark gaps can be installed for protection of transformers; no automatic
reclosing equipment is necessary in this case.

Shear and Compression moduli of Rubber
9, PP. 38 - 41
TEXT: A method is described for measuring the static shear modulusu and
the first Lamfi coeffioientk of rubber in small volumetric (abouD 0.1%j and shear
deformations (about 2 - 3%). The formula for calculating the value of the Shear
modulus of rubber is derived (Formula 12). The author arrives at this expression
by adopting a sample in the form of a rubber cylinder with the outer diameter b.
the inner diameter a and the length Lo. Based on a relationship prevJously j,!rlv-
ed by the author (Akust, zh., 1956, Vol. 2, No. 3) the value of the tffeotive com-
pres*ion modulus Eff is calculated, which depends on the raluo of the Internal
and external diameters of the cylinder E = a/b, and the elastic parameters of the
rubber,k'and/A p in the case where there are no normal shear and tangential ter-
sions on the external lateral surface. The experimental apparatus used is des-
cribed in detail. The graphicpl expression of the absolute compression magnitude

The haemoglobin values of 227 boys and girls aged 4 to 7 yr., from Murmansk.
'were tested at the beginning and at the end of their stay at a health resort (June and
August 1957). A higher average increase was found in the children from Murmansk
in comparison with the results achieved in children from Leningrad who stayed in
health resorts near the city. The average increase In haemoglobin In the Murmansk
children was 10 to 14%. The haemoglobin measurement is regarded an an objective
Indicator for the success of summer health resort treatment.
