TITLE: The role of voles in tundra rabies epizootics in polar foxes

ABSTRACT:Tundra rabies ("dikovaniya") appears as an epizootic among
foxes throughout the Arctic coastal region. Tundra rabies
has been found to share biological and serological proper-
ties of common (11street") rabies, and R. M. Shen (Shen,
R. M., V kh. Besheastvo, M., 1958) related the tundra
rabies virus to strains of common rabies causing atypical
forms of the disease. The importance of voles as a reser-
.voir of both common and tundra rabies is of interest; the
author concentrated upon characteristics of the infectious
process in some voles, and their susceptibility to tundra
rabies. The species studied were: Hicrotus gragaZis major,

M. middendorfii (northern forms), M. gregaZis gregaZis, and
Lagurus lagurus (southern forms). Standard methods of
passaging and examination were used. It was concluded
that: 1) voles are highly sensitive to tundra rabies in
intracerebral infection; 2) voles and white mice are approxi-
mately equally sensitive to the virus; the voles M. gregalis
major and M. middendorfii are less sensitive to subcutaneous
infection than are steppe lemmings; 3) the disease often
takes the dumb, paralytic form in all:types of voles,
though the stages of frenzy and drooling are observed in
some animals; 4) despite the relatively high virus content
of the salivary glands (1.75-2.5 l& LDSO), voles could
not be infected through the bites of rabid animals; 5)
.none of the narrow-skulled voles caught or found dead in
the tundra during an epizootic among polar foxes yielded
the virus; and 6) voles do not play a,significaut role in
-the epizootology of tundra rabies. (ELI

systems

TEXT: The aDDlication of similarity methods involves the use of
unit coordinales and -time values. Control systems with a .large
rnuriber of varlables are calculated by the Stodola-method; this
method consists in excluding all static parameters and attributing
to thG rest of them time units of the first and second degree.
This enables the designer, e.g- to exclude seven parameters in a
fifth-order system, while the application of thed-i -theorem does
not permit the exclusion of more than three parameters. Calcula-
tion examples are given and mention is made that the method

motors. Computations are carried out for the determination of servomotor time
-constants, oil consumption, and the choice of ratios of gate valve window and'

nonlincarity will make possible the practically instantaneous triggering of the

TITLE: On the Complex Automation of Hydro-
meteorological Measurements

ABSTRACT: The Hauchno-issledovatel'skiy institut gidrometeorologicheakogo
priborostroyeniya (Scientific Research Institute of Hydrometeoro-
logical Instruments) and others, developed a series of automatic
devices and telemeters for measuring hydrometeorological elements.
Some of them are mentioned here. At a fixed time, an automatic,
radiometeorological station records atmospheric pressure, air tem-
perature, mean wind velocity, and direction, amount of precipita-
tiong and the presence of sunshine. These data are then transmitted
by radio,to the information collecting station. An automatic radio-
anemometer which is set up on a large reservoir transmits informa-
tion to the ships regarding wind velocity and direction over the
open part of the water basin. An automatic radio precipitation
gauge transmits the precipitation amount in the place concerned.
Radiosondes with automatic recorder, measure meteorological ele-
ments at different altitudes. Automatic devices and telemeters
record wind velocity and direction, water level, swell, flow

addressee. The author suggests same methods by
which this could be overcome, and places most of the
blame on the fact that the chiefs of relay stations
and brigadiers of com=ications points are not
alert enough.

!20-36 years of age, following 3 hours noise of 110 db intensity in a
.chamber. Indices were: urinary excretion of total nitrogen, urea and
:ammonium nitrogen and urinary oxygen; cbronatograpbic determination in
itbe blood of free amino a.cids and glutamine; excretion of the vitamins
IB1, B2-1 C, Ni-metbylnicotinamide and 4-pyridoxic acid. They were
:determined prior, during and after the effect of noise. Results showed
ithat the nitrogen metabolism underwent no significant changes except for
