DEJATEL .1955, 5/4 (547-554) Graphs 7 Experiments were performed on 2 dogs In 2 experimental chambers. In the lot chamber an alimentary conditioned reflex to acoustic and visual stimuli and a de- ij fensive conditioned reflex to a tactile stimulus were elaborated. Then, in the 2nd chamber, the same acoustic and visual stimuli were used as defensive stimuli while the tactile stimulus was used as an alimentary stimulus. Experiments in the Ist chamber were continued alternately with those in the 2nd chamber. At first. in both experimental chambers defensive and alimentary reflexes to all the con- ditioned stimuli were intermingled, but gradually the dogs learnt to respond to a given stimulus with the proper reaction, depending on the chamber in which the experiment was conducted. The metabolites, called radio- inductors (RI), migrate to the unexposed parts and inhibit cell division in them* The inhibiting of mitosis in observed even after wetting the 'growths in extracts from exposed plants. The quantity of radio-inductors formed during a determined range of doses increases with the dosage. The authors suggest that the products of oxidation of phenol derivatives, in particular those of the oxidizing disintegration of tyrosine, may be the inhibitors of cell division. Theoretically, the products of the fermentative oxidation of tyrosine include dehydrophenylalanine, various qminones, and high-polymer melanines, some of which possess properties of free radicals and powerful oxidizers. The forma'ion of the carbohydrates mentioned provides experimental Card 1 /2 1 UDC: 577.3 ACC NR- 06000469 corrol)oration for the ritudy of producto from the exponed leaven by the method of chromatography and EPR. Model testa on Inhibiting mitosis after the addition of tyrosine, tyrooinase, and melanines indicate that theae carbohydrates are radio- inductors. The authors suggest that the intermediate products of the oxidation of tyrosine found in a free radical state can form complexes with DnNA~nd exclude it I from the cycle of changea necessary for the beginning of mitos5. A study of change in the state of deoxyribonucleic acid in E.Rcherichia, coli exposed to guyna-radiation IERIODICALt Radinbiologiya, v. 1, no. 4, 1961, 476-478 TEXT- It was found that irradiation of hens in a dose of 2.5 kr led to an immediate change of 50% in the structuro-mechanical properties of the secreted polvmoli:cular deoxyribonucleic acid (DRN) complexes. This points to disturbance of the crude state of DRN in the cell. To check whether this phenomenon has a general significance in radiation biology~ the authors studied the state of DIM in E. coli before and after irradiation, ThA D%N state and the effects of radiation at various stages in the bacterial strain's develorment were also studied. Testa Tests wa-e run on a young 16-hour and a stationary 46-hour culture of Cafd J./3 30345 S/205/61/001/004/002/032 A study of changt, D298/D303 E. coli var. B, irradiated by gnmma-rays from a CO 60 source in a dos* of 4 kr (L "'31 for the particular strain) at an intensity of 450 r/min. and at 370 and 20 0C, The s true tu ro -mechanical properties of the DIM were measured with a capillary elastov-iscosimeter at 25 0C and the results expressed as values of the relative viscosity -9rel . The results sho-e-d that DRN in the young E, coli culture was in a special. state, characteriz.e-d by the high structuro-mechanical properties of its solu- tions ( yirtl 209 dl/g)~ The stationary E. coli culture contained MN in a qualitatively different state, with a -.1rel. value of 100 dl/g. Immediately after irradiation, changes of 50% in the structuro-mechanical properties of the DIN were Hoted in the young E. coli cultureg whereas in the old culture these properties showed no practical change. The authors deduce from this that there is a special state of DFW charac- teristic of young mitotic cells, and that this is linked directly with their sensitivity to radioactivity. CHANGES IN CARDIOVASCULAR ACTIVITY DURING AND AFTER RADICAL OPERATIONS UPON THE LUNGS (Russian text) - S t r u c h k o v Fedorov B.K . a V.I., Skripnichenko D.F.. nd Iva r re i~o v A. P. - VESTN. KHIR. 1956. 7 (64-70) This work Burveys the results of study of cardiovascular activity during and after radical lung operations on 170 patients. Particularly marked and prolonged changes in cardiac action were observed after removal of a lung or ligation of its vessels. Alterations of blood pressure were observed in the course of the first 48 hr.; oscillographic and oscillometric investigations were testified to changes in vascular tonus after lung operations. Normalization of the vascular tonus at rest took place on the 10th-14th day after operation. After lobectomies and seg-- ment resections the rate of the blood circulation did not change substantially; after removal of a lung and ligation of the pulmonary artery the rate of the blood circulation Increased to 1.5 times the pre-operative rate. The cardiovascular action does rot become fully compensated until 5-6 months after the operatic~n. COLLATERAL CIRCULATION IN INJURY OF THE BLOOD MSEL5, (Russian text) - S t r u c h k o v V - I - - K111RURGIIA 1957, 5 (73-77) Tables I On the basis of obse~v`a_t-1-o_,-i_s_,or'S279 -patients with gun-shot wounds and injuries of the large blood vessels the author discusses the value of anatomical as well as functional collaterals of different major blood vesszls. The development of collat- eral circulation in them is diflerent. This should be taken into conGideration in choosing a method of surgical intervention. Special attention is paid to considera- tion of the functional condition of collaterals immediately after the injury. %leas- ures to increase their width are to be taken at once in order to prevent gangrene of the extremity. Prevention and treatment of 8hock. acute anaemia, increasing haematomas, chilling, fatigue, wound infection, assist the maximum development of collaterals. Great significance is also attached to gentle operating technique and good anaesthesia. The analysis of all factors that hinder development of collateral circulation and the measures which aid in recovery of circulation are fully dis- cussed in this paper. EXCERM IMICA See.9 Vol.12/5 Shwgery May 1958 2762. THE PLEURAL 'CAVITY AFTER RADICAL LUNG OPERATIONS (Russian text) - St ru c hkov V. I . and Sk ri pnic henko D . F. - KIURURGIYA 1957, 7 The experience with 273 cases is reviewed, Pulmonectomy had been performed in 94 patients, bilobectomy, lobectomy and segmental resection in 144, while 35 were Subjected to ligation of pulmonary artery, thoracotomy, etc. Tile different methods of treatment of pleural cavity were studied i.e. prolonged drainage, drainage durit,g 48 fir. and complete closure of plcural cavity with drainage by means of punct-ire following. The latter was carried out in lobectomy, beginning directly after the operation and in pulmonectomy on various indications. The most important indication for drainage is the presence of symptoms of displacement of mediastinal organs by accumulating exudate. Antibiotics were regularly intro- duced into the pleural cavity in all cases. Lately, before the suture of thoracic wall, the parietal pleura was infiltrated by antibiotics dissolved in novocaine solu- tion. It is pointed out that after bilobectomies, lobectomiqs and segmental resec- tions the pleural cavity is filled by the dilated residual portion of the lung, by elevation of the diaphragm and partly by development of fibrothorax. After pul- monectornies the cavity is filled by raised diaphragm, displaced mediastinal organs, collapsed thoracic wall and fibrothorax. The latter is formed from pleural exudate. Treatment of pleural cavity by the closed method, without drainage. is re- commended. STRUCHKOV, V.I., prof. Principal diagnostic problems and therapy of chronic suppurative pulmonary diseases. Tomography as an adjuvant method of roentgenological investigations has an outstanding diagnostic value in these cases. It visualizes the shape of the structure, its cavities and their de- t ai the outline of the inner wall and of lung sequestra. A clear-cut polycyclic S; g bu 11~,, n shape of the round shadow with a cavity inside is found to exclude a lung abscess and to mean that a disintegrating cancer in the 'Period of extensive growth is present. Sometimes a disintegrating peripheral pulmonary cancer in the stage of infiltrative growth may be tomographically differentiated from an abscess. (D(,5.14,15.,16) STMJCMCOVP Vol. -- --- . . .
