The unfired powder contained: Na and K - 0.01%; Fe - 0.002%; Cu - 0-0005%; Pb - 0.005%-' FiS.7 shows corresponding curves for 90% A1203 + 10%j BeO by weight fired'in a hydrogen atmosphere furnace at a temperature of 1580 OC fo"r three minutes. Fig.8 shows flie corresponding curves for A1203 + 1% Cr203 synthetic ru 'by.; the inaterial was fired at a temperature of 1580 OC for three minutes and contained S102 - %, Fe20 le- 0 07%. All the specimens.behave as semiconductors. The specil. 90@ductivitj,is high at low temperatures, of the order of 10- ohm-1 cm- at about 1000 OC but. increasessharply to a temperaturb of 1900-1400 -CC, where there is an inflection point in the curve indicating a change in the inechanism of the electrical conductivity. This inflection p6int occurs at lower temperatures for-mixed.than for pure spe -cimens. The A1203 and,Beo behave as semiconductors because they are .10 contaminated with oxides of alkali metals, iron and others. Variations in firing conditions cause considerable scatter #f results. Therefore, the best method of evaluation of coals for power generat- ion is on the basis of their calorific value. The experi- ments were carried out by the Chemical Laboratory for Coal lnve@tigations of the Lenin-Ugol' Trust of the Karagandaugo3l Combine.' Cha nges in the diameter of the pipe and variations in the: wall thickness are compensated by using two piezoelectric pickups located symmetri-,I-' cally with respect to the seam and an additional electronic circuit which generates i ,an error signal proportional to the difference between the times of arrival for thei-. ultrasonic oscillations reflected from the seam to the first and second pickups. Analytic expressions are given permitting both evaluation of linspection errors stemming from measurement converter unreliability and determination lof efficient structural redundancy. To explain the effect of logical methods of pro- :cessing the data received from the redundant measurement converter unit use is made of la characteristic of automatic inspection systems like probability E of receiving false!-- Iresults of parameter inspection because of measurement converter unreliabiliyt: E - I L + M, where L is probability of false rejection with respect to the inspected para- meter and M is probability of not rejecting. The systems treated have outputs ending ias follows: in an OR output, in an AND output, in an output using the "unanimity" Card, UDC: 629.13:658.562.001.24 ACC NR: AP7002821 principle, and in an output using the "majority" principle. Redundant measurement !t--onverters with the simplest logic circuits are shown to reduce L and with more com- 1plex logic circuits, both L and M, depending on the demands made of parameter inspec-, Ition reliability indexes for E, L, and M and with rigid restrictions on structural Iredundancy m logic OR circuits or those using the "unanimity" principle. It is ad- visable to use a circuit employing the "majority" principle if it is necessary to ob- tain extremely small values of E, L, and M and it is possible to use m - 3 and more identical measurement converters. TITLE: New Wheel-rolling Shop of the Nizhniy Tagil Metallurgical Combine (Novyy kolesoprokatn y tsekh nizhne-Tagil'skogo metallurgicheskogo kombinata5 PERIODICAL: Stal', 1957, V0.7, PP. 616 - 621 (USSR) ABSTRACT: A description of the wheel-rolling shop designed by Gipromez for the Production of 180 000 tons of wheels with their mechanical and thermal treatment is given. The distri- bution of equipment is shown in Vig.l. Main points; 14 ingot- cutting machines (at present capable of cutting 11-13 ingots per shift each), two four-zone ring furnaces with rotating bottoms for pre-heating semis before deformation (furnace capacity - 216 semis), 3 000-ton press for primary reduction and piercing, 7 000-ton press for the final forming of semis; wheel-rolling mill; 2 500-ton bending press. The duration of the whole operation on presses and rolling mill is 2.5 - 3 min. In order to prevent the formation of flSkes, packets of 6 wheels with a temperature of 450 - 600 C areotransferred, into soaking pits for isothermal treatment at 600 C for 3 hours (altogether 48 soaking pits of 2 150 mm in diameter and 2 110 mm Cardl/2 in &pth). After cooling in air in packets, the wheels are 0 (500 - 520 C for 3-0 3.5 hours). The present scherm6_-o-f-------'- cutting ingots into semis is shown_in Fig.26. Steel used: 0.5 - 0-716 C, 0.6 - O.T11o Un, 0.15 0.35% Si; 40-05% S, ,(0.05% P. Data on the distribution of defects in rejected wheels during the first quarter of 1957 are given in the table. In conclusion, it is stated that an improvement in the stability of centering of top and bottom stamps in presses is necessary. There are 1 table and 2 figures.
