ABSTRACT: The results of-the first attempts by the Institute of Physics
of the Earth of the Academy of Sciences USSR and the Institute of Goo-
Iphysics of the UkrSSR to use the ultrasonir pulse method in iron mines
of the Krivoy Rog basin are described. Experiments were conducted to
determine the physicomechanical parameters and the ore and the surround--
ing rock, to establish the dependence of elastic-vave velocity on the
pressure in the ore blocks, and to test the method of observing changes
in the state of the ore block during operations. The OP-55 mine $*is- -

!=e,~hod of determining elastic wave velocities in*ore blocks as weli as I
studyinjg their dependence on external loading was further developed.
iData was obtained on elastic-wave velocities in the ores and enclosing
rocks , and the nature of velocity change near the walls of excavated
surfaces was established. The power distribution characteri3tics of
an explosion in the mine were analyzed. Orig. art. has 10,figurese

ABSTRACT: An investigation of the offect of films on contact surfaces Is
presented. Two designs of contacts were studied: (1) Air-exposed contacts and
(Z) Sealed - In-plasti c -container contacts. The "effect of long storage" was
studied by subjecting the contacts to a 10 - 15 -mlit/min flow of F6S , concentra-
tion 3 mg/liter, at 25t 3C, 95 *3% humidity, for 48 hre; Ag, Au, Pt, Pd, and

investigating the electrophysical characteristics of surface films formed on
contact materials" included measuring the resistance, by voltmeter and ammeter,
of a contact between the plate specimen and a sphere made from Pt+ 25% Ir
alloy; the test plate was placed in a PMT-3 n-dcrohardness teeter whose diamond,
indentor was replaced with the above sphere; a contact pressure of 0. 5-200 g
was applied; open-circuit voltage was 50 mv; current, 10-'s - 10-1 amp.

studied by placing both the plastic and contact material in a scaled envelope and
subjecting it to thermal aging. Plastics AG-4S at 17SCo K-Zl 1 -3 and RST at
150C, and teflon at 250G were aged for 178 hrs. Dark spots were discovered on
the metal after the aging test; the spots were due to the metal surface sorption
the volatile substances produced by the plastic materials. The spots on some of
the metals and alloys offered a contact resistance up to tens of magohmst Silver:

In rhesus-immunization of women during pregnancy or after blood-transfusion the
types of rhesus factor are important. For determination of the typcs of rhesus
factor. anti-Rh , anti-Rhl andanti-Rh" serum is required. Anti-Rh sera are met
much more frequently than the other types of serum. When selecting donors with
rhesus-negative blood it Is necessary to use standard anti-rhesus sera and to
consider as being rhesus-negative only such blood as Is devoid of every type of
rhesus factor. Not only rhesus-negative persons but also others with various types
of rhesus factor can be given rhesus-negative Immunization. References 14.

Periodiml IVast. AN Kaz. SSR 2. 57 - 65, Yeb 1955
Abstract IThe malting processes of cuprio concentrates and their physical properties
at high temperatures were investigated with the perspective of adapting
the electrochemical methods in motallurgy. The results Indicate that the
malting concentrates and ores and the derivation of high Si-sLw '
(S102 > 511%) Is possible only by electric smelting. The flux consumption
in this case can be reduced to,a minimum and the final results are highly
satisfactory. It was established that the malting point of high SI-slags
depends upon the SiO2 and C&O contcits, in the c6naentrate. four USSR

ABSTRACT: The methods of chemical mineralogy are used to investigate Chimkent
Lead-plant s)nter with the purpose of studying the question of S com-
pounds and the phase composition thereof. In the course of sintering
the bulk of the sulfides become Pb and Zn silicates, ferrites of the
plumboferrite and magnetoplumbite type, and more complex systems
yielding Pb-Zn-lime-iron glass. Also observed is a considerable
number of inclusions, representing the residual grains of concen-
trates and fluxes: Limestone, quartz, barite, feldsparse galenas

ABSTRACT: The reactions of PbS and ZnS with PbO* SiO2, 2PbO, Sio
PbO* FeZ03, and FeO'SiO2 were investigated in the 600 - I~Yoooc
temperature range in a current of NIt is demonstrated that
with an increase in temperature to 1~500 the reactions are
speeded up. The curves of the rate of these reactions have a
clearly expressed maximum. The interaction of PbS and ZnS
with the monosilicate proceeds more completely and the rate
of the summary reaction is higher than that with the bisilicate.
An increase in temperature to 1200o reduce.A the rate of the
reaction owing to a considerable volatilization of sulfides and

interaction of Pb silicates with PbS, the main products of the reaction are Pb,
Sio and SO 2* The interaction of Pb silicates and ZnS proceeds according
to t4e, reaction of double decomposition (exchange reaction) with the formation
of Zn sili( ales and PbS. The rate of the intera(tion of PhS with Ph ferrite ~'s
higher than with its silicates. At 10000 the reaction is 99?/0 complete in 60 min.
The reaction of ZnS with PbO' FeZ03 at the maximum temperature :s only 30 0/0
complete, The rate of reaction of PbS with fayalite is very low. In one hour at
12000 the reaction is only 8. 4(~o complete. There is practically no reaction
between ZnS with FeO'S;Oz- The low rates of the reactions indicated point
to the fact that they have no decisive value in a sintering roasting.
