,ABSTRACT. The daily Yariatione of atmospheric density at heights of 200-300 km
have been investigated on the basis of data obtained from Soviet satellites in the
period 1960-1963. The investigations confirm the existence of diurnal dencity
fluctuations at these heights in the period approaching minimal solar activity
(1962-1963). Thus, for example, at a height of about 300 km, sate@j@te 196OC3
found that p /Pmi - 1.9. At a heig t of about 250 km Cosmos-111;ffound that the
ratio was 1.5@awxhile nat 200 km Cosmos-2@?found the ratio to be 1.1 and 1.2. Between

The decrease in upper atmosphere deniity betveen 1957 and 1963 as revekled by satel

that in the period approaching minimal solar activity, the amplitude of dally var-
iations of atmospheric density-at 200 km remains the same as in the period of near

synthetically produced a 99.60 % pure dicyclopentylmethane
(according to a method deviating from A.F. Plate and V.I.
Stanko [Ref 2-7). The degree of cleanliness was determined'
according to the method of A.G. Anikin, Ya.I. Gerasimov, G.N.
Dugacheva and N.N. Kozhevnikov fRef 71 . The spectrum was re-
corded. Furthermore it was stated s The dehydration of di-
oyclopenty1carbinol by pyrolysis of its acetate or by means
of magnesium sulphate can be recommended as a method for de-
hydration of bicyclic alcohols.

ABSTRACT: Difficulties were bound to occur in connection with the prob-
lem of the applicability of the reaction of the catalytic de-
methylation to the thiophene derivatives because of the spe-
cific behaviour of the latter on metallic catalysts in the
presence of hydrogen (Refs 6-11) which is known to be a pro-
duct of thc! said reaction. Ili/Al 20 and Co/Al 0 3 were used as
catalysts. The velocity and the pr9ducts of t9e reaction of-
2-methyl-thioohene with water chanEe gradually if its vapors
are allowed to uass above a fresh catalyst (Fig 1, Table 1).
2-methyl-thioph@ne separates the methyl group and is subjected
to a small extent to a ring cleavaCe. The existence of lateral
methyl groups renders the rinG system more reactive. During the

contains thiophene which vanishes as soon as the velocity of
the gas separation has attained a coastant value. The quantity
of C02 first exceeds that of the saturated compounds, vanishes
then, however, toj:ether with thiop!iene. Unsaturated h drocar-
boris and H2S occur at temperatures higher than 4000. The co-
catalyst has an effect similar to that of Al. Table 2 shows
the depenuence of the composition of the liquid and I-aseous
products on the temperature, on the quantity of water, and on
the composition of the catalyst in the experiment with methyl-
thiop-ene. dithin 1 hour of heating in hydrogen the consumed
catalyst is restored, unless it had lost its activity completely
before. A longer heating increases its activity (Table 3)-
Iferefrom it can be concluded that %,iethyl-thiophene i3 demethy@-.-
lated in the reaction in question. The co.;Iplete cleavage of the
methyl-thiophene molecule which occurs as well may develop with
the participation of either hydro@;en or water. The dealkylation
of methyl-thiophene thus determined is a model reaction for the
production of thiophene from al)cyl. subs ti tuied. The present
