TITLE: New reaction for producing beta-chloroalkyldichloronhosphinmifrom ol4ifins
according to an ionic mechanism
SOURCE: AN SSSR. Doklady, v- 159, no. 2, 1964, 385-388
TOPIC TAGS: chlorinated organic compound, organic phosphorus compound,
ionization, readtion mechanism
ABSTRACT:
-ta-chloroalkyldichlorophosphenes were produced by addition of
PM t6 olefins in the presence of aluminum chloride, analogously to the
sch2me of its electron analog SOC12. The reaction mechanism is discussed:
through the formation of donor-acceptor adducts, capable of ionization, between i
PC13 and the aprotonic acid, and the formation of complexes of C1 P with the
.unaaturated compounds, addition of a chloride ion from a polaricei PC1 mole-
3
cule. Reversibility of the processes was demonstrated by the formation of
ethylene upon heating of chloroeth.yldichlorophosphene with AIC13; excess

TITLEt Method of determining long-period static defects of beat-
resisting alloys in relationto their cracking
PERIODICALt Zavodskaya laboratoriya, v. 28t no. 11, 1962, 1356 - 1361
TEXT: The tensile strength, the long-period.i.ensile strength, and the
fatigue strength of -=A437A (B1437A) alloy speuimens were determined after
thermal treatment according to TY(TU), both wf.th and without previous cold
hardening (stretching to 5 or 151)6). The fractured surfaces of the tensile-
test specimens were examined for cracks.by usUng a binocular microscope,
in addition to which some of them were metallagraphically polished.
Cracking were made evident by a widening of grain boundaries. Boundaries 2
0.0) - 0.1 mm wide were considered as cracks. On non-plated specimens
such cracks appeared at 7000C and T H/TH . 0.2 - 0.3; at 8000G, they
appeared at TH/TH - 0.3 - 0.4; in the case of' plated specimens atIr H/THoO*2.

ture and stress, T H is the time until fracture. Thus cracking already
begins in the early stages of the static experiment. It coincides with
the beginning of the second stage of creeping and with the appearance of
the first surfuce cracks. The results of tensile tests cannot be regarded
aa comparative criteria for the quality of the initial material and of a
pretreated (cold hardened) material, since the relative variations of 6' B
(yield strength) and S k (tensile strength) of specimens with or without
cold hardening are equallized by the action of Lon,---time static loads. The
long-period tensile strength was determined on :),,16,7 (Ei6.17) and 914437e
(E1437B), besides E1437A', alloy specimens. The results show that material
defects can be slowed down by suitable predeformation. Further, it is con-
cluded that the behavior of structural members under static or dynamic
loads can be determined only by experiments that imitate practical cond-i-
tions. There are 4 figures and 1 table.

Tn long-standing cultures Penicillium and Aspergillus will lose such formations as
sclerotia, clei3tocarpia anu conidia-carriers. The most marked changes are in U* species
Monoverticillata 3tricta and Biverticillata symmetrica with their relativel'y simple
conidial apparatus. More stable is the section Penicillium asymmetrica; here the
conidial apparatus is much more developed. It is urged that methods and culture
media be studied in order to preserve the properties of the3e organisms.

Abstract A study was made of the coefficient of moisture transfer
in a bounded rectilinear shaft of length R, the entire sur-
face of which is insulated against penetration of moisture,
and the lateral surface of which is also insulated against
penetration of heat; the initial tempere.ture to and mois-
ture content Uo are uniform throuE-:hout the shaft. One end

of the shaft is maintained at a temperature! tn > to) and
the other at to, and since nodrying takes place it follows
that the average moisture content of the in.-.terial remains
constant with lapse of time and a redistrilution of the
moisture takes place solely as a result of heating. For
this problem a system of differential equations has been
set up, and of boundary conditions pertaining to these
equations, the solution of which is presented in 2 forms
which are convenient in use at high and low values of
Fourier criterion. From an analysis of the curve of mois-
ture variation versus time it was ascertained that the
moisture content U, at points near the heated end, increa-
ses with time, reaches a maximum, and decreases thereafter
rapidly down to a ceratin magnitude; the time within which
the maximum is reached increases with increasing distance

from the end of the shaft, but the magnitude of the maxi-
mum remains unchan6ed. The nature of such a humidity wave,
arising under the influence of a variable field of tempe-
rature, is determined by the criterion of Lyl:ov Lu = al/a
(where a' and a are the coefficients of potential conduc-
tion and thermal diffusivity of the material with increa-
se of Lu the humidity wave undergoes more rapid propaga-
tion and penetrates deeper into the specimen while magni-
tude of the maximum increases. A new method is proposed
for the determination of the coefficient of heat and mois-
ture conduction, which is based on the change in the magni-
tude of the maximum of humidity as determined by Lu. For
this purpose a series of thermocouples are disposed along
the axis of the shaft, which is maintained under all of
the above-specified conditions, and the readiags of these
thermocouples are periodically recorded. Con2urrently

of the hygrometer for the determination of U, are included.
Formuias are given for 'die determination of z~', a and the
thermogradient coefficient - , when the field of t and U
are known. The experiments have shown that -.t elevated
temperatures of the moist material a considerable evapora-
tion of moisture within the specimen is obse:,ved. The ana-
l U -

tion, shows that in -this instance the fields of t and U
are also determined by a new criterion Fe ~_E . r. _7T_

TITLE: Change of the Optical Properties of Benzene Irradiated by r-Ray3
PERIODICAL: Doklady Akademii nauk SSSR, 19599 Vol 129, Nr 29 PP 307-309
(USSR)
ABSTRACT: The present paper deals with the inve,,.tigation of such optical
properties of irradiated material whi.,.h make it possible to
determine the accumulation of transfo:--mation products. For this
purpose the scattering of light, luminescence, rotation of the
polarization planet refractive index, and the molecular absorption
spectra of pure benzene were investigated. Benzene was purified by
drying over sodium, subsequent ractional distillation and finally
by recrystallizing it twice. C090 se-~ved as ource of J'-radiation.
At a high integral irradiation dose ( 110-109 r) an insoluble
yellowish-white precipitate is formed vrhioh may be easily
separated by centrifugeing. Subsequently the samples were

which is heat resistant. The degree of depolarization decreases
with increasing dose of irradiation, viz. due to the incxease of
the isotropic component of the Rayleigh scattering. The anisotropic
component IX shows only unimportant fluctuations with respect to
the isotropic component Izo This indicates that in the isotropic
liquid isotropic inhomogeneities occur. At doses of 5-10 6 r
chloroform groups are observed which determine the color of the
compound. With increasing dose the purely molecular scattering
passes into a scattering of the Tyndall type which is in connection
with the occurrence of larger particles of the radiolysis
products. The luminescence spectra were recorded by a 'V-hree-prism
spectrograph of the type ISP-51 to determine the spectral composi-
tion. A diagram shows the results of the photometric recording
which illustrate the dependenoe of the density D on the wavelength
A . With increasing irradiation dose of benzene the intensity of
luminescence increases especially in the red range of the spectrum.
The luminescence character of the irradiated samples is confirmed
by the complete extinction when small quantities of aniline are
Card 2/3 added. The effects described here may be explained by the

properties of the large molecules which are formed in the
radiolysis from the initial benzene. The rotation of the polariza-
tion plane of the irradiated benzene is also of interest. This
indicates the occurrence of asymmetric molecules without center
and plane of symmetry. These results lead to the following
conclusions; (1) The effect of the r-rays on benzene changes its
optical properties which illustrate the dynamics of the radiolysis
processes. (2) The change of the character of the inhomogeneities
and of their development at increasing dose may be determined by
the method of light scattering. (3) The 'Liminescence of the
irradiated benzene is shifted into the visible range. There are
2 figures and 5 references, 3 of which are Soviet.

TEXT: Benzene was purified by drying over sodium, fractionally distilled,
and twice recrystallized. Its purity was checked from the optical refrac-
20
tive index (n D . 1.5011 t 0.0001), and then it was poured into glass
ampouls and irradiated with a Co 6o source. Initially colorless, it turns
yellow at 5-106 r. With higher doses, insoluble yellowy-white precipi-
tates are formed which can be removed by centrifuging. According to
I. V. Vereshchinskiy ("Deystviye ioniziruyushchikh izlucheniy na
neorganicheskiy i organicheskiy sistemy", AN SSSR, p. 234) and M. Burton
(Journ, Am. Chem. Soc., 76, 10, 1954), separation of the benzene end
leads to biradicals of the type R(C H )R. Developed chains with con-

jugate bonds are characteristic of luminescent substances. Irradiated

the isotropic component of the scattered light (Iisotropic ) in-
creased, while Ianisotropie'remained essentially constant. These
effects were amplified by freezing the samples immediately after
irradiation. The decrease of A was less pronounccd in degassed sam-
ples, showing that a lesser ai,,iount of the polymer is precipitated
undcr theoe conditions. Irradiation of unevacuated samples with
ultraviolet (5 1/2 hours) gave reoults analogous to those of a- ir-
radiation. 'dith higher-amounts of the radioly~qis products (doses
-107 r), the reactions may be followed by spectroscopic methods.
Luminescence spectra may be used to detect an increase in the mole-
cular weight, i.e. tile formation of the polymeric product when ben-
zene is irradiated. -,iith low dosages of 4' rays (3 X 10 5 r) and under
UV irradiation over 5 112 hours ~unevacuated samples only), clearly
defined peaks appeared at -5625 A. In the case of 3- irradiation,
the maximum for evacuated samples was less intense. There are 3 fi-
gures and 2 tabies.

A&3TH&OT: As the output of the melting shop of the Dneprospetsstall
'Works vras insufficient for the noriinl operation of
rolling mills a project of reconstruction of the shop
was developed. This involved the redesigning of:
electric furnaces in order to increase their capacity
(an increase in diameter); furnace tilting mechanism,
bath and roof rotating mechanisms as well as the
standardisation. of principle units and parts. The main
design modifications ale described and illustrated in
diaSiums. As a result of this reconstruction the output
of redesigned furnacus increased bY 3052 the duration
of the furnace campai&u by 5C~~ (1.5 years as against
1 year). To shorten the time spent on capital repairs
an installation was made permitting the removal of the
whole furnace body with lining and replacing it by
another. This shortened the time-spent on repairs from
8 days (accordino to plan) to 55.5 hours. However,
