Abstract: Ninety cases involving panmyelopathia following the administ-
ration of Rheopyrin (90 g.) were discussed. In the final stage the
disease developed into a syndrome resembling acute leukemia. A case
in which lymphoid leukemia showed in its course of disease and in the
histological findings symptoms similar to lymphosarcoma was described.
The importance of the drug in the morphological changes involved was
stressed. 24 references, including 11 Hungarian, 6 German, and 7 Wes-
tern.

ABSTRACT: Redox potential (RP) measurements were carried out in algal
cultures to investigate the influence of the daily periodicity of light
and darkness on changes in RP values and to establish the relationship
between RP and growth curves, It was found that RP values are subject
to regular daily changes, and are higher and lower in light and dark-
ness., respectively. The difference between the maximum and minimum
values varies greatly depending on whether the cultures or grown in
inorganic media or In those containing organic hydrocarbons. It is
assumed that this might be caused by differing oxygen tensions due to
difference in photosynthetic oxygen production in the various media.

ABSTRACT: A method for continuous cultivation of algae is described; this method can
produce algae in sufficient quantities to inoculate larger culturing units. A diagram
of the apparatus, which is based on the light-utilizing properties of the algae
(Chlorella in these experiments) and on the theoretical principles of continuous cul-
tivation, is given in the original article. Experiments showed that this system is
self-regulatory in a certain light-intensity range: its productivity per unit volume
of suspension remains constant at a rate of inflow of the medium between certain
limits. The computed cell concentration values at different renewal periods must be
taken as limits since the values obtained deviate approximately 10% from theoretical

TITLE: Tubes with a corrosion resistant lining

TEXT: Tubes lined with vinyl and polyethylene plastics (tube
diameter 211, thickness of lining about 3.5 'am) produced at the
Dnepropetrovsk Tube-Rolling Mill were tested in the pyridine and
sulphate plants of the Dnepropetrovsk Coal-Tar Chemical Works.
The tubes were used for transportation of corrosive media of the
following characteristics: acid solutions with various 'contents'
of sulphuric. acid (0.5, 6 to 8, 30 to 4o, 70 to 80%), in some
cases crystals of ammonium sulphate were present; weakiy alkaline
solutions, containing pyridine bases, hydrogen sulphide, hypo-
sulphite, thiocyanides, etc. The temperature of solutions were
up to 50*C, the pressure did not exceed 2 to 3 atm. Tubes under
these conditions have been in operation for two years Iand are
still in service. For comparison, bimetallic (steel-copper) and

stainless lXl8i-',9T (lKhl8N9T) tubes were tested. After carrying
media containin g armiionia, hydrogen sulphide or hyposulphite,
bimetallic tubes placed after neutralizers and vacuo filters in
the desulphurizing plant become unserviceable after one month,in
the pyridine plant (acidity,6 to 8a,/4), after 6 months and in the
benzole washing plant after one year. Stainless steel tubes are
still in operation after 2 years. It is concluded that plastic
lined tubes can successfully replace stainless and non-ferrous
tubes for transporting corrosive media at temperatures up to 70
to WC. The necessity of development of improved types of
connections is stressed.
