Until now. there has been no clear criterion for defining the sequence of the advance and retreat of the summer and winter monsoons, the limits of their penetration onto the continent or ocean and their rate of movement. The key critericin, used in. this study is the equivalent potential temperature (01), a rather stable characteristic of the properties of air masses. Beginning in 1948 one section of the field was kept completely fallow for 2 years, but from 1950 circles near the stems were mulched with manure. In the fall,, when the soil was dug over., the manure was graded into the soil. On the other section beginning in 1950 the same treatment was used; the seedlings on this sec- tion were planted in 1943 and for 7 years no fertilizer was used an the soil of this section -- only weeds were controlled.
