The shock wa.ve was generated in a specially designed assembly by an explosive ch#rge. The charge ruptured an aluminum diaphragm and discharged into a hemispherical vessel which was closed by another di@lphragm connecting it with a cylindrical tube; the hemispherical vessel'was filled with hydrogen, which, after rupture of the diaphragm, generated a shock wav4 in the cylindrical tube filled with xenon or air. The maximum shock. velocities in xenon and air were 3T and 43 km/sec, respectively. The brightness temperature in xenon had a maximum of 50,OOOK at a shock K velocity of 18.km/sec; with a further increase in velocity, it decreased to 23,OOOK. A maximum brightness temperature of 73,OOOK was recorded in air at a.shocli velocity of 43 km/sec. Orig. art. has% 4 figures. The switch closes several electrical circuits which cause a red warning light to come on, a bell to ring and a flag to be stuck out. The signal- ling device works off 220 v ac mains.
