TITLED The Influence of the Burrowing Activity of Ellobius talpinus,
on the Development of Takyr Vegetation (vil-yanlye royushchey-
deyatellnosti slepushonki na razvitiye rastitellnosti takyrov)
PERIOD.ICAL: Doklady Akademii Nauk SSSR, 1956, Vol. 12og Nr 1, pp. 20-2o3
(USSR)
ABSTRACT: This almost blind rodent can influence the soil development
and the vegetation essentially in some cases by its extreme-,
ly effective burrowing activity-The author describes these
phenomena in takyrs of the Yeske-Darlyalyk valley in the
northern Kzyl-Kum desert. There are no such data in publi-
cations. With its wide, distribution in loamy deserts this
animal is most numerous there in the ancient irrigated soils
of dry river beds. The margins of the massifs of typical
takyrs are colonized, too, in consequence of the remarkable
capacity of this animalto penetrate even these especially
solid soils. The earth hills thus brought up stretch dozens
and hundreds of,meters from one depression with vegetation
Card 1/3 tothe other. Old hills are covered by a takyr crust and

seem to remain in this -form for a long time. No concen'
tion of salt is observed here because of t.he low proportion
of salt in the takyrs. As the underground passages collapse
small depressions arise on the takyr surface where rain water
is dammed up. Higher pli.~nts settle here: Anabasis ramosissima,
less A. aphylla (Figure 1). Such depressions can also be
caused by other facts. Another stage of settlement is the
appearance of Artemisia serotina and Aeluropus litoralis in
the midst of Anabasis. At the edges of the depressions
Lycium ruthenicum settles, in the center Hulthemia berberi-
folia and others. The richest vegetation,is reached when
Halo)~ylon aphyllum settles in the depressions. (Ref 7). In
the shade of its closed heads a thick grass cover ariseS. In
general the amount of vegetation is rather.manifold and va-
riable. Contrary to that the vegetation of the -wide faint
depressions of the takyr plains is very uncomplicated and al-,,
most everywhere alike. In the takyrs the rodent mentioned is
closely connected with -the vegetation of the depressions
and favors its development. Other landscapes are no" influenced
by this animal. The distribution of Elloblus talpinus in
Card 2 3 Centrall Asia reaches as far as K~zakhstan.and Turkmen4a.

The Influence of the Burrowing Activity of Ellobius IlDinus on the De-
velopment of Takyr Vegetation
Aelto burrowing this species is most active among all other,
hypogeal animals. Some jerboae, however, as the 'small earth
hare (Alactagulus pygmaeus) can favor the settlement of
Anabasis ramosissima in perfectly barren places. There are
3 figures and 9 references, which are Soviet.

'ABSTRACT: In geographic determinations of Rhombomys opimus Licht. areals,
combined topographic and aerial mapping are recommended. The topographic
mapping should be based on the preexisting maps with scales of 1:100000 or
1:300000, whereas the supplementary air photography should be made from the
altitude of 200 meters. The relative merits of different mapping procedures with
respect to different densities of the Rhom1bomys opimus population are discussed.
