Abstract Pisce of filter paper 10 mm in diameter were impregneted
with 30% solutions of various carbohydrates, were dried
and stored zaider sterile c-)-nditions. As required, the
discs are suspended in test tubes conta-ininG 1% peptone
water with phenol red as indicator. Prior -'.-D this the
test tube is seeded with the DrCrnnis= under study. When
it is necessary to measure us formati-)n, there are used
instead of the discs, strips of filter paper folded in
the shape of an M, also irapre,-,-nated with the carbohydrate
solutio-n. In the presence of -as these strips rise to

TEXT: This survey deals~with the followin- questions.-
combating noise at its source, i.e. in the aircraft; combating
noise outside the source, i.e. at airfields and in their vicinities.
One of the methods of combating noise is based on increasing its
frequency so that its attenuation during propagation in air is
.greatly enhanced. It is possible to employ mobile or fixed noise-
~suppressing devices at airports. Secondly, the problem of no;se
can be alleviated by situatin- the airport in a suitable loc4lity.
As regards individual means of noise-suppression, these zencrally
take the form of earplugs or ear-muffs. An efficacious ear-muff
was.developed at -the Moskiewski Instytut Ochrony Pracy (Moscow
Institute for Industrial Safety). Architecturally, noise can be
combated by using suitable building and insulating materials as
well as adopting appropriate designs. Major importance should be
attached to special acoustic glass. There are 10 figures.
