of the aecona half of intra-uterine life there is a well-

With binocular vision th.e.colour thresholds were lower, being
sometimes , twice as low as with monocular vision. Investigations
of.reaction to visual load were measured with.an asaombly.oftext-,
objects consisting of a series of tables with numbers and other
i.-tiages which i-;ere presented to the test subjects. The'data
obtained confirmed that binocular vision is more perfi~ct than
monocular. It may be supposed that in distinguishing colours the
procczs of converting external energy is associated with
correspondence of the retinae and-physiol'ogical summation of
stimuli in zlie central formatlons,,including binocular blending
of colours.

ABSTRACT: An Author Certificate has been issued for a method of study-.
ing color vision by means of spectral indication. To.increase the
accuracy of testing and to decrease diagnostic errors due to color
fatigue, the subject is presented a "color equation",made up.of colors
close to the zone of maximum human sensitivity. These are: 1) mono,
chromatic yellow-green light (spectral line of magnesium) with a wave-
length of 5TO MV for half the observation field; 2) light obtained.by
mixing two monochromatic colors for the other half of.the observation
field, e.g. red light (spectral line of copper) with a wavelength of

"Dok Ak. Nauk SSSIO Vol LXVIII, NO 5
Exrperimental data led to conclusion that lower. furctional activity in Vkyroid glands
of rats after surgical trauma was related to decreased ability of the gland to react
to thyrotroTic hormone. Xethylthiouracil does not produce a.complete "goiter"
reaction because the indrease in the gland under its influence is a reaction to
greater secretion of the hormone. Fact that surgical trauma has a definite effect
on the th,,roid gland in both rats and chickens confirms the assumption that the
described conditions, may be valid in higher organisms. Submitted by Acad A. F.

M,RIODICAL:Teploenergetika, 19592 Nr 3, pp 15-19 (USSR)
ABSTRACT: There is not yet sufficient. operating experience of the
methods of automation and control that have been adopted
at unit-type power st-ations. Only parts of the automatic
system have been fully tested under conditions
approximating to practice. Three main groups of problems
require further development: definition of objectives
and selection of control circuits; the organisation of
control and remote manual control; and the selection of
control equipment. The requirements of the control system
during external and internal disturbances are discussed.
In principle it is best to be able to' keep the set
running when all the load has been dropped but, in practice,.
this is not always possible, The load-control circuit at
present used for boiler-turbine units is illustrated
Card 1/4 schematically in Fig,~l. It includes a speed governor,
an isodromip pressure regulator and a statiepressure

regulator at, the turbine. The static pressure
regulator permits of a wide range of adjustment to suit
operating conditions. Under normal operating conditions,
automatic. control requirements in unit-type stations are
not much different, from those where the sets have a
common steam supply and may even be simpler. However,
automatic operation of unit sets poses special.problems
under fault conditions. The most, difficult. conditions
are those that o6cur "hen the system loses load suddenly
or the turbine and generator are disconnectecl on fault.
The automati,:~ control requirements of this case are
discussed. Automatic: interlocking between the motors of
auxiliary ecraipm-ent is -very similar in unit-type and
ordinary power stations. However, additional interlocking
will be provided in new stations because the number of
operating staff is being reduced. Automatic operation of
the unit during star',-ing from the cold is one of the
least-studied questions, althcugh a solution appears
Card 2/4 more feasible than in cases where the unit syst-em is not

employed. on the other hand, automatic starting from
thehot condition presents greater difficulty. So far,
the best solution is to haw a single panel for the
control of all the main and auxiliary equipment of two
units, including generators and house-service transformers.
The only exceptions are fuel delivery equipment and water
treatment plants. The best location of control panels
is discussed and illustrated diagrammatically in Fig.2.
The apparatus that should be installed on the control
panels is discussed. Certain special measures, to ensure
reliable and convenient operation of the equipment,, are
enumerated. Althou&h considerable progress has been
made in instrument development, the standard regulators
and instruments currently available are unsatisfactory
Very good electronle controllers have been developed but
they.are not ,suitable for all cases and there is an
inadequate range of hydraulic go-vernor Sear. The
available alectrical instruments are not well suited to
