The brine having reached maxi- mum permissible density should not be combined with, but replaced by fresh one, discharging-tbe concentrated brine into special settling con- tainers. Fresh brine should have a density of 25-26c Be, which requires special pre-treatment C ard 1A Bulgaria /themical Technology. Chemical Products 1-6 and Their Application Mineral salts. Oxides. Acids. Increase in the concentration of 14SSO, promotes precipitation of NaCl, but the latter is thus contaminated with the sulfate. From spent brine can be obtained, in wintertime, Mg-sulfate, which, after recryBtallization, is suitable for medicinal use; in the summer this brine can be used to recover mixed salts (sulfates, bromides), and from the mother liquor, concentrated after- the separation of these salts, is recovered Mg- chloride. The method results in considerable savings of fuel. C ard 2/2 PFECEILAVSKI., II.; 6TOIANOV, T. Study on reduction of the water content in the soft-cenent 1). 23. Effects of IR and centi- meter waves are compared. While both types of waves produce the same degree of heat- ing in surface tissues, only the centimeter wave produces a biological effect, e. g., change in endocrinal processes. This difference is attributed to the difference in the effect of the two types of waves on the ions and molecules in the tissues. The re-, actions of hunans, monkeys, lizards, chickens, ants and snails to induced electromag- . netic fields are described. In humans, centimeter waves were found to produce specifics. biological effectst slowing of the heartbeat, lowering of blood pressure and exhaus- tion of the nervous system. In animals, these waves suppressed conditioned reflexes, reduced sensitivity to sound and lowered the biopotential of brainwaves. The effect of electroms&netic waves on cell division, heredity, and pathogenic activity are dis- 1/2 L 46287-66 ACC Mt AP50163~1 cussed. The author ouncludes that in most cases the biological effects are not depen-, dent an the intensity of the eloctromagnetic field, i. e., that the sme effect is observed in both strong and weak electromagnetic fields. Continuous nonthermic irra- diation brought about an alteration in the cardiac rhythm due to a reflex-vegetative response. These chan- ges were reversible. The effect of impulse microwaves PERIODICAL: Byulleten' eksperimental'noy biologii i meditsiny v. 53, no. 2, 1962, 39-43 TEXT: This is the continuation of previous studies, in which the effect of continuous microwaves was investigated. Impulse microwaves were generated from a VNIIMIiO apparatus, at a wave length of 10 cm, time I microsec., irradiation rate 700 impulses/sec, intensity 3-5 mwatt/cM2. The experiments were carried out on 8 female rabbits weighing 3-4 kg. The irradiation of the dorsal as well as ventral parts of the body with impulse microwaves at a non-thermal intensity, brought about a chromotropic effect, during the irradia- tion itself, and for a short time after it. The chronotropoc affcct itself is regarded as a reflex v-,Lscular-vegctative reaction to the effect of microwaves. The effect of the impulse irradiation was more marked than that of continuous irradiation. This is explained by the direct effect of the impulse microwaves on the deeper tissue layers. There are 2 figures and 2 tables. ASSOCIATION: Tsentral'nyy nauchno-issledovatel'skiy institut a kurortologii i fizioterapii, Moskva (Central Institute of Health Resort and Physiotherapy Research. Animals In a hay Infusion were placed in a polystyrene cbadoer attached to a microwave generator. Four tests were conducted using the following irradiation parameters: 1) nonpulsed microwaves in I/sec doses (A = 12.5 cm) with a durazioa of 5-100 msec; 2) pulsed microwaves in 1/sec doses (4 = 10 cm, durations, 7-50 msea, pulse frequencies, 200-700 imp/sec); 3) alternating current (l implaec*9 240 and 1200 cps, impulse duration, 120 msec) on a background of nonpulsed microwaves with the samme duration; 4) alternating current (1 imp/see, 240 and 12PO cps, Impulse, duration, 100 msee) on a background of pulsed microvavea with the same duration S~rd 1/3-- rL 45614-65 !ACCESSION 11R: AP5011562 (pulse frequency, 100 imp/sec). 7he first series shoved that each dose of nonpulsed microwaves evoked a reaction aitailar to E01R. The second series nhowed that the mesa power threshold values for pulsed microwaves were higher thui valuas for nanotiloed microwaves with durevions of 10 msec. The- threshold values deCreEtSed as the dura- tions increased. Stimulation by pulsed microwaves had a cumulative effect. The third and fourth series demonstrated the sensitizfwng effect of microwaves of sub_ reas%!d the threshold voltase of thr'eahold power., It was found th&t microwaves det. . A. a-c currents required to produce ESR. 1rhis, together with the fact that heLting ,did not exceed 1.-5C in any.series, indicates that microwaves have a nonthermal i:effect. Argumen,'s against the thermal nature of the ESR evoked by microwaves in- clude the following:. 1) irritation threshold ve-lue's-for pulsed and nonpulsed microvaves depend on the quadratic root of their duration or series; and 2) virtually I no relationship between pulse tbreshold power and pulse frequency was observed. Tt was concluded that these date. would help elucidate the mechanism of the action of imicrowaves on the excitable structures of higher animals. The following topics are discussed: 1. electrical properties of tissues in the microwave range; 2. microwave absorption in the tissues of living organisms; 3. dosimetry of microwaves and evaluation of their effect on humans and animals; 4. r sponse of organisms to the irradiation with microwaves of medium and high intensities;, 5. response of humans and animals to low intensity microwave irradiation; 6. mutationst") in animal tissues and organs under the action of microwaves; 7. study of the effects of microwaves and electromagnetic fields of other frequencies on the cellular and mo_ T lecular levels; 8. reception and generation of electromagnetic fields in living orga- nisms; 9. mechanism of biological action of microwaves and electromagnetic fields of UDC: 577.37 Co 2 L 02"9-67 ACC NRt AP5016101 other frequencies. The author concludes that the principal effect of electromagnetic fields is to be seen in the information processes (transformation, transmission, cod ing and storage of data) between systems, cells, molecules, etc. and the energy of the field merely serves to implement this effect. Since a biological reaction may ac-~ tually intensify in the face of diminishing field intensity, the biological effect is not deemed a function of field intensity.
