A speci- al worki"Investigation of Methods to Determine the Surfaces Roughness of Castings".was oarried,out in 1956 by the foundry department of Scientifle Re- search Institute of Materials and Technology in Brno, 63R. A brief descrip-* tiDn of the US method based on the military standard MIL-STD-10A is given. Research on standards giving an accurate evaluation of surface roughness was the subject of experiments carried out by the Czechoslovakian Institute. Ex- periments were carried out on grey iron bars cast into green sand molds of Card 1/5 Normalization of Surface Finish of Castings S/128/60/000/007/017/0 A105/AO33 synthetic mat9rials,,i.e.1qua-rtz sand and bentonite, clay and water glass, Specimens of varying degrees of surface roughness were subjected to control checks. The TSK 014450 standard lays down three numerical roughness criteria; mean arithmetic deviation from the medium line of section R profilel rough- nesB height R., being the mean distance between five highest and lowest PTO- file points; maximum height RZ , the vertical distance between the highest band the lowest point of roughness. 'Value R. was selected as the most sUitable for the determination of the surfaces roughness of castings. The speeftens were examined under a Reichert microscope and 3ubjected to check according to the Schmaltz method. The maximum measuring error is assumed as t 15% for rough surfaces, +_ 25% for surfaces with 50e Rz and t 30-35% for 50-100,4CRz. The measuring results showed (Table 1) a s tin faqtory coinoidence with the ordinary value series according to the standard etN-014450 which permitted the classification into 10 surface finish standards. A brief measuring manu- al. is given. In cast iron production four of these standards are sufficient. These and three standards for finishes below R. - 25yvand one R2, - 400-/X will. meet the requirements regarding all known alloys as shown in Table 2. The C2iechoslovakian Institute which aims at a more accurate graduation of surface finishes than that recommended by USA, will continue its research in 1960 and 196j. Of the countries behind the Iron Curtain only Czechoslo- vakia is mentioned. The author states that in this country only 1% of cupolas are provided with a hot blast.
