AUTHOR: The author states that in the process of recondition-
ing oil or gas wells it may become necessary to drill cement
plugs. This operation is complicated and takes much time. Be-
fore Molchanov's device was introduced in the oil fields operat-
ing under the Ukhtkombinat, cement plugs were drilled with a
rotary drilling unit driven byan LT2M-80 tractor or the BA-20m
machine.'This operation lasted sevsrala. weeks. Therefore,
I.G. Bakardzhiyev, mechanic of the Ukhtkombinst, proposed the
use of a slight modification of Molchanov's device for this
purpose. As a result of this modification the device designed
originally for sinking and lifting pump tubings was enabled to
break up cement plugs in a 5-in. or 6-in. bore-hole at a depth
of some 1,000 m. Cutter bits 4 3/4-in. or 5 3/4-in. in diameter,
attached to pump tubing, were used for this purpose. Molchanov's
device for drillIng cement plugs in well shafts proved more

TITLE. A Comparative Study of the Embryology and Biology of the

ABSTRACT.' In spite of the extensive distribution and the great economic impor-
tance of the representatives of the Eucalyptus. LIH&it species eme
bryological data concerning this species lack early completely. The
few works known are quoted. The present work aims at the purpose
given in the title. 8 species originating from the Caucasian Black
Sea were studied. The development and the structure of the generative.
organs is similar with all species investigated, therefore mainly,
E. cinera is described. These organs are described in detail in the
following. The eucalypts are distinguished by a long lasting ripening
of the flower buds.
In the case that this period lasts for more than one year the seminal
buds generally are in tho 2-4 nucleoli stage.
In the cave of E.Macarthuri and E.pauciflora the seed buds show a

same year of the E.cinera was carried out. Moreover the entering
of the pollen tube and the fertilization are described. All stages
of the generative development take place much more rapidly in the
case of the spring species than in the case of the winter species.
In spite of the great number of the seminal buds in the ovary of the
eucalyptus only few fertile seeds are formed in the fruit (2-5 in
the case of E.cinera). The embryological investigation of the ancient,
species eucalyptus (the fossil rests.of which were found in the
upper cretaceous a d the tertiary age) in the case of several species
of various sections a great similarity of the embryologicalcharaca
teristics. This obviously demonstrates the lifelikeness of this
important species and its ancient origin.

ABSTRACT: This myrtaceae genus contains more than 2o species from Australia
and New Zealand. Since the embryological data about it lack al-
most completely, the author studied the mentioned species under
glass-house conditions. Thit structure of the flower parts is de-
scribed. The order of the structure of the single flower organs
corresponds to that of EucalXptus which belongs to the same fa-
mily. The saall seminal buds which exist in great quantity are an-
atropic andhave two integuments each of which consists of 2 series
of cells like most of the myrtaceae. Bucellus is itlatively only
to a small. extent developed. The archesporial cell secretts the
cover-cell. which is several times divided. Since the upper cell
of the dinde is not divided Only 3 macrospores are formed which
are placed linearly. The lower cell forms according to normal
formation. type the embryo-sac. The antipodes die quickly. The polar
nuclei rennian long time unmelted. The egg-apparatus consists of

its core. Only 18-19 days after the pollination the nucleolus
of the sperm becomes visible. Its core differs now frora that
of the egg cell only by the smaller size. The melting of the co-
res in the! zygote was noticed in the earliest cast 0n the 32nd
day after the fructification. Thus the fructification of Ithe egg
cell takes place 2 weeks later than the triple melting. he first
division of the zygote was noticed on the 29oth day after the pol-
lination . 1he fetal development takes place according to the so-
lanaceae type. The ripe embryo is described. The reserve substanc-
es are in its body, as proteins, amino acids, and fats. The en-
dopserm is alnost completely consumed. the nucellus almost comp-
letely destroyed. The bursting of the fruits and protrusion of the
seeds occurs 2-3 years after the pollination. Rather ofLen nuce-
llar embryons are formed instead of zygote embryos. If both em-
bryo types ire produed at least 2 embryos result. This phenomenon
is to be sought in further representatives of the family. Apparent-
ly there is an inclination to it due to heredity. There are 2
figures, 2 tables, 21 references, 19 of which are Slavic.

Pollen Tubes of Certain Amaryllidaceae
Pollen of a hybrid amaryllis species (cultivated by V.N. Shmygun)
furthermore of Clivia miniata and Crinum abyssinicum were
chosen for this purpose. The pollen was caused to germinated
on a synthetic culture medium at 250, and sawn on a culture
medium layer on an object carrier. After cutting furrows into
the cultuxe medium for air supply all was covered by glass and
sealed with paraffin to prevent desiccation. Best results were
obtained with a 24-120-fold exposure-acceleration, i.e. 1 - 5
exposures per second. The entire photographed process,
beginning with the germination of the pollen nucleus up to the
division of the generative cells and the spermatozoa formation
(18-24 hours) is observed within 15-20 minutes. It is described
in detail and illustrated (Pigs 1-3)- It is obviously
demonstrated that the generative cell and the spermatozoa do not
move passively with the plasma current, but move independently
actively. They overcome* sometimes with difficulty, such
obstacles as counter currents of the plasma or a bottle-neck in
the pollen tube. The deceleration and even the stoppage of the
movements of the generative cell during division when the

PERIODICAtz Zavods):aya laboratoriya, 1959, Vol 25, Nr 8, pp 1019-1020

ABSTRACT: The Gosudarstvennyy institut po proyektirovaniyu traktornykh
zavodov i zavodov sellskokhozyaystvennogo mashinostroyeniya
(State Institute for Designing Tractor Plants and Plants Con-
structing Agricultural Machinery) elaborated the project men-
tioned. in the title for installations of the machine con-
structing and metal processing industries. The classifying of
the central plant laboratories (CPL) was made according to the
kind of plant. The plants were divided into three groups ac-
cording to the type of machines they manufacture. The first
group consists of plants producing machines working under
especially difficult conditions (high temperatures and pres-
sure, etc). In the second group are plants which manufacture
machines which operate under high degree friction and abrasion
Card 1/2 strain, in aggressive media, at high velocities or pressure

(automobiles, tractors, motors, heavy equipment for the elec-
trotechnical and chemical industries, etc). Factories making
large ball bearings belong to this group. The third group in-
oludes the remaining machine constructing factories which make
for example machine tools, agricultural machinery, textile-
and palser products machinery, etc. Concerning the output
capacity the factories are also divided into three groups:
mass and large-scale production, serial and small-series
production and individual production. There is mention of
several specialized (CPL). An increase of 20-25% of the con-
trols of repeated testings, of 30-40% of the checking of
technological processes and of 5-10% of such tests as are need-
ed for research work is recommended. The extension of the last
mentioned tests (as planned by the Gosstroy) is insufficient
according to a note of the publishers. The article contains
information on the size of several -('CPL).

ABSTRAM The method mentioned in the f4tle was first proposed by Ye~ V.
Polunskiy and A. I. Nazarov. A neutron detector is install:d
in a cylindric pipe closed at the bottom and located in a
cylinder-shaped tank of 84 1 contents (height 43 cm, diameter
50 cm). The tank is then filled with a radioactive solution.
The pipe can be moved in such a way that the cylindric tank
can be divided in equally sized zones by the different Positions
of the neutron detector; each of these zones can be measured.
This possibility is needed for example for testing the sengiti-
vity of the method -(the measuring procedure is described). The
Card 1/3 method can be applied already with concentrations of 1-2 mc/1.
Use of the 0 18 (a,n)Ne 21 Reaction to Determine the SOV/89-7-2-14/24
Concentration o-r co~_ active Substances in Aqueous Sclut"ons
When the detector (SIN-9) is used with a lead filter, the
concentration can stil-1 be measured with aot-background of
AJ150 graff-m equivalent/l. :he condition the solution has
practically no influence on the neutron yield. If the concen-
tration of nitric acid is changed from a 1 n solution to an 8 n
solution, the neatron yield is only 2% less. The presence of
U235 and Pu 239 in the solution has the following effect: if the
uranium concentration is 100 g1l (natural isotope compositicn)
the neutron yield increases 2.6~ due to the fission neutrons,
but it decreases simultaneously by 3% due to the moderation.
Therefore the uranium concentration has no influence if the
a-radiation of the uranium has not to be considered. A plutonium
concentration of 1 g11 increases the neutron yield by N IOGI'~-
This fact has to be taken into consideration, The presence of
light elements in the solution to be examined can cause errors
in the results. The presence of following concentrations in-
creases the neutron yield by only 1%: Be _ 8 mg/l, Al - 1,A g1l;
Na - 0.42 g1l. Special advantage of the developed method is that
the mea!3urement can be carried out in any desired distance from
