ABSTRACTt The authors Inv stigated the possibility of hydroUenation-
cyclisation of V(2-pyridyl)ketones and of the keto acid.
During the hydrogenation of 5-W-pyridyl).-pentanon-0(2)
in diluted HC1 on an Adam's catalyst the diastomer
4-methylquinolicidine was obtained In hiqh y1eldsi Its
picrate had a meltitiC point of 193 - 195 0 5-(2 _pyridyl)
pentanol-(l)-one-(2) was also subjected to stereo-speci-
fic reduction cycl~jsation. This compound was synthesised
by reducln,~ ethyl 6 -(2-pyri.1yl)-O( , N -dihydroxy-
valerate with LiAlH and by hydrolisin- the formed
4 L,
hydroxyketal. The crystalline 4-hydroxymethylquinoli-
cidine was obtained in 70% yields by hydroCenation of
the hydroxyketone; the meltinr point was 47.5 - 490C.
Stereo specific reduction cyclisation was also observed
durjrj~", the hydroCenation of 8-(2-pyridyl)-Ct-ketovaleric

1946, 849-62 ( in Russian ); cf. C.A. 400 2283.
EMts. shpwed that the relative lowering of bulk weight of a coal charge by Misture
is Uie more pronounced the finer the coal. The amt. of moisture corresponding to
min. bulk weight of a given charge increases with increasing fineness of the grist.
Under norma.1 moisture conditions,, the bulk weight increases with increasing coarse-
nesaj with 5% moisture., a 1% OuLnge in the class below 3 mm. grain size gives rise
to an av. charge of bulk weight by 0.2%. The bulk weight is further increased by
viderdrig of the dispersity limits; it can be raised to a max. through elindnation
of inteme-diate grain sizes. The weightincreasing effect of microaddns. of kero-
sene is the more efficient the finer the grist and the wider the limits of di-sper-
sity; elindnation of intermediate sizes acts in the same direction.

The efficiency of coking plants was increased by adding 0.1-0.3% of a hydrocarbon
to the coal to be coked and thoroughly mixing the two, Suitable for this purpose
are kemsene and anthracene oil. The izmnediate effect is to increase the weight
of a char-go, but this treatment also improves the cpiality of the coking Fas and
the coke* It also perrdts coking af coalB which ordinarily are not suitable for

ABSTRACT: 7,v% offect of the air excess factor and the rate of gas flow on electri-
cal conductivLty in methane-air flames were investigated. The experimental setup
is shown in fA-',_-um 1. The maximum electrical conductivity of the flame falls with-

Pends upon the flow rate of the combustible gas mixture. An
increase in the flow rate of air-rich mixtures results in
higher maximum electrical flame conductivity while the re-
verse is true for air-loan mixtures. The dependence of the
magnitude of the maximum electrical current upon ols shown
