Coupwison of the errors, obtained upon inser- tion by various methods, makes it possible to conclude that the most suitable for practice is the method of intro- ducing the slags into the discharge zone by solution. Sibir3k. fiz,-tekhn. in-ta pri Tomskom un-te, 1958, Nr 36, pp 273-276 ABSTRACT: The authors investigated the accuracy and sensitivity of the spectral determination of Mg in solution In the case of capillary, rotating, and porous electrodes. They used a spark excitation source. All three methods of Introducing a solution Into the spark gap are more or less alike as regards their sensitivity, as well as their accuracy, The mean arithmetical error of reproducibility amounts to -- 4%. The article presents the method for calculating container strength and illustrates the self-sealing watertight seals used for the cover, a plexiglass port, and the electrical leads from externally mounted sensors to the container interior. For a working pressure of 1100 kg/cm2 and an inside diameter of the container of 26.4 cm, the calculated wall thickness is given as 42 mm, and the cover plate and bottom as 9 cm, with an adequate safety margin. Figure 2 shows the cover-plate seal, where I is the container, 2 is the cover bolt, 3 is the cover plate, 4 is a 10-mm- thick rubber gasketyand I and II are the cover-plate and container mating surfaces Card 1/4 UDC: 551.460.18 L 10012--67 ACC NR- AF66361 Fig. 1. The sealing arrangementfor an electrical lead from an externally mounted sensor is shown in Fig. 3. Up to 15 leads can be accommodated in this arrangement. The sealing arrangement for a plexiglass port 30-mm in diameter and 25-mm thick is given in Fig. 4. All the above sealing arranpements were tested at the__LeninFrad Branch of the All-Union Scienci -fic-Research and Design Institute of Chemical Machine7; in the High-Pressure La~o tQry )f Moscow Stat -e-Vniversity (to 1200 atm), and aboard the R/V-Mikhal' Lomonosov to 6500 m in the At:antic ocean. It describes the Van de Graaf generator at the Physical Institute Imeni P.N. Lebedev of the Academy of Sciences, USSR. The machine was completed in 1956. The generator is In a horizontal position and is mounted on three Insulating columns 1.8 m long each. The 60 distributing rings and the high voltage electrode are made of duralumin. The high voltage electrode is in the form of cylinder connected to a hemisphere 38 cm in diameter. The electrodes in the accelerating tube are in the form of thin stainless steel discs with apertures 8 cm in Card diameter. The accelerating tube is 1.8 m long and is 1/2 made up of 180 electrodes separated by porcelain rings. The width of the belt is 26 cm. The belt moves with a 69157 S/139/ 59/000/06/01 L'-/03 1+ 9032/9111+ Some Problems Associated with the Design of an Electron Electrostatic Van do Graaf Generator linear velocity of 21 m/sec. The generator works in a nitrogen atmo here at a pressure of 5.5-7 atm. A mixture of 80;pnitrogen and 20% C02 gives the best results. It was also useful to use pure nitrogen since the freezing of moisture out of the mixture was found to be difficult. Measures were taken to keep the relative humidity to about 0.0~%. The machine produces 1 MeV electrons, the energy spread being 0.05%. The energy spread Is controlled by passing the beam through a deflecting analysing magnet and looking at the energy deviations In the focal plane of the magnet. A special beam probe is located In this plane and sends an energy error signai back into the machine. The machine delivers Card current pulses of 1 mamp, the pulses being of the order 212 of 20 psec. The angular dJvergence of the beam is io-3 rad. There are 5 figures and 7 referencesq of which 1 is French, 1 is English and 5 are Soviet. ASSOCIATION: Fizicheskly institut imeni P.N. The Mekhanobr Institute proposed a technological process for the magnetic roasting method of concentration. As the cost of construction of a magnetic-roasting plant involves large capital investmentalthe authors propose different measures which will cut down the capital expenditure. AN SSSR, 1956, 108, No 5, 945-947 Abstract: Several amphidiploid low-fertility hybrids of different wheat and simner wheat types aiad summer rye were planted in vegetative vessels in an abundantly fertilized soil. PeginnLne with the sprouting of p1cuito into the tube. a weekly extra above-root nutrient mixture with 0.05'j boric acid was administered. The fertility of hybrids Great~y increased.
