TITLE., A comparative study of the vibrational spectra for several aromatic acids In
gaseous and condensed states

WSTRACT: The Raman and infrared absorption spectra of benzoic cld_~n
toluic acidslare studied in the gaseous, liquid (at vario!B-Fe-mperatures) and crys-
talline statt~. Temperature-phase changes in various spectral regions are studied.
.It is found that several lines are invariant during temperature-phase tmnsLtLm*.
The frequencies of these lines am fairly close in all three passes: %16009 IU1500,
1%700 Carl (infrared spectra) and %1600 .1000 1.600 cm-1 (Raman spectra). Lines are
observed at frequencies below 1600 cm-1 which'are rediotributed with respect to

jntensity during phase transition. There Is usually an Increase In the Intensity of
ithe low frequency component with a noticeable frequency shift. The most character-
:istic redistributions are tabulated. Other temperature-phase changes associated
with the dissociation of dimers are observed. These experimental data are used as a
basis for a quantitative evaluation of some association parameters. Curves are giv-
en showing the intensity ratio for bands of the monomer and dimer, as well as the
dimer-monomer equilibrium constant as a function of temperature in a melt of benzoic
.acid. These curves show that the hydrogen bond has no noticeable effect on the
,electro-optics of the molecular vibrations. An expression is derived for the dimer-
monomer equilibrium constant. An analysis of the experimentally determined tempera-
ture dependence of the dimer-monomer equilibrium.constant for benzoic acid showt a
linear relationship. Data on the temperature dependence of vibrational spectra in
,the middle frequency region may be useful for a quantitative study of the hydrogen
'bond. These temperature-phase changes in the vibrational spectra of carboxylic
adds are completely regular and just as typical for direr association as the widely
known changes in the C=O and O-H regions for stretching vibrations. Orig. art. has:

TITLE: Synthesis and properties of hydrocarbons of the dicyclopentyl series

TOPIC TAGS: hydrocarbon, dicylopentyl, self-condensaLion. ketone. alkNiation, aldehyde,

ABSTRACT: Thirteen homologs of dicylopentyl, with 11-24 C atoms, were synLhesized
with special regard to the polysubstitu Led dicyl open tyl s, the presence of which in crude
oils is very probable. For the synthesis of dicylopentyl derivatives, the well-known self-
condensation of cyclopentanone was used resulting in 2-cyclol)cntylidenccyclol)entinone.
From this ketone a series of homologs of dicyclopentyl with different radicals linving 1-14
C atoms were obtained. Then, by self -condensation of 2-alkylcyclopentanones, ketones of
the type
R (whore 1; ~ (-1111, CIIIII, C71115),
were obtained, which were converted directly or by the Grignard reaction to hydrocarbons

'I'he 2-allcylcyclopentanones necessary for the reaction were obtained by alkylation of
cyclopentanone with aldehydes (propionic, butyric and enanthic). 1-he properties and
names of the synthersized hydrocarbons are tabulated. The Grignard reaction was
carried out with both unsaturated ketones and a saturated ke Lone- cyc 1 open tyl cyc I open tanone.
With unsaturated ketones, the yield of tertiary alcohols was much higher. The chromatogram
of I- m ethyl - 2-cyclopentylcycl opentane, obtained by the reaction of methyl-mak-nesium
iodide with both unsaturated and saturated ketones, is given. In both cases, the identical
mixture of trans and cis- I - methyl - 2-cyclopentyl cycl open L.Mes were obtained. Initial

of 25, 18 and IA, respectively. The preparation of 2-.Llkylcyclopentanoncii hy alkvlaLion of
