BOV/20-127-6-43/51 TITLE: On Free Radicals in the Peroxidase Oxidation and Photooxida- tion of p-Crffsol PERIODICAL: Doklady Akademii nauk SSSR, 1959, Vol 127, 1Tr 6, pp 1297 - 1300 (USSR) ABSTRACT: The products isolated among the products of the oxidation men- tioned in the title (Ref 9 , and also those of the chemical oxidation (Refs 6-8), namely: tetrahydrobenzopyrone W9 292t-dioxY-51-5'-dimethylbiphenyl (II), as well as a triphenyl analogon (III), induced several investigators to consider the process of eormation of these substances as proceeding over free radicals (Refs 5,800). All these products are colorless substances Insoluble in water. The authors obtained products with these properties in the following ways: 1) By the action of light on p-cresol solutions in the presence of riboflavin (Ref 11)j 2) By means of crystalline peroxidase of Messrs Light and Cc Ltdi 3) By the action of potassium ferricyanide (Ref 6), In the oxidation of p-cresol, either by impurified or purified Card 0 polyphenol oxidases from potatop no white or other insoluble On Free Radicals in the Peroxidase Oxidation and, BOV/20-127-6-43/51 Photooxidation of p-Croool product was formed, but a red-brown substance soluble in water, The "photoproduct" dissolves completely in slightly alkalized water. It precipitates again after acidification. Its solu- bility in acetone, benzene, methyl- and ethyl alcohol, ether, ethyl acetate, and chloroform, is very good. Neither the "per- oxidase-0 nor the "chemical" product dissolve completely in alkalized water, alcohol, or ether. They were both separated in 5%-NaON into a. soluble and an insoluble fraction (Ref 6). Table 1 shows the results of chromatographing (khromato- grafirovaniye',, the photaoxidation product. No other substances could be detected besides the one which forms spots with the values of R (see Table 1). Also the bi-dimensional chromatc- f I graphy was not able to separate the said substance: its melt- ing point was 740. Further constants of this substance are in- dicated. Its i2olecular weight of 394-5 is similar to that of the quater-phonyl analogon which consists of 4 dohydroeenated p-cresol molecules (C7117O-C7H60)2 , and has a molecular weight of 426. On the other hand, the calculations of the empirical Card 2/3 formula of the isolated product show that this substance con- On Free Radicals in the Peroxidase Oxidation and S07/20-127-6-47/rl Photooxidation of p-Cresol Gists of (C060)-units- 4 such units would yield a substance (C6H60)4 with a molecular weight of 376, which is also similar to the isolated substance. The products obtained by the au- thore are, however, not similar to the products already de- scribed and mentioned above; either by their melting point, or molecular weight, or elementary composition. As is known, the reactions of the free radicals are inhibited by polyphencls (Ref 17). This produced 0.005 mg/ml of hydroquinone in propor- tion to the said white product. The peroxidase oxidation was inhibited by 0.6 mg/ml of hydroquinone. Further investigations of these problem,q are necessary. There are 1 table and 26 ref- erences, 6 of which are Soviet. It deacribef an installation of a reactor in which 6'r'ia76fc-llq4l&ige-rve,#--ni-glFo-coulant, and as the moderator. The low- power reactors of about 5 Mw are expected to be economical in the remote regions where the usual energy sources are not available. Mosk. in-ta khim. mashinostr. , 1957, Vol I I pp 149-17-1 ABSTRACT: A study is made of one of the types of plane friction cam rnech- anism used in automitic machinery. A friction roller drives a cam which ib hinged wi a rocker arm. One end of the rocker arm raises a rod which is subjected to a ?arying load. When t.he rod reaches a stop, the other end of the rocker arm starts to rise, and this causes a compression force to be exerted on d spring which serves to maint, iin the incomplete hinge of the rocker arm in operational contact. In the kinematic inalysis of the mechan- ism it is assumed that the driving roller has a constant speed and that the cam rolls over the roller without sliding. A deter- mination is made of that value of the coupling coefficient of the higher pair which is necessary to assure pure rolling. It is Ca rd I /Z pointed out that at the start of the cycle, and during ret-urn of 124-58-6-6356 Aspects of the Theory of Plane Fri.ction Cam Mechanisms (cont. ) the links to their starting position, the cam can become separated from the roller, The relative slip of the elements of a friction-cam couple is inves- tigated experimentally. 1.
