Authors suggest that these operation effects are probably
elicited by some mechanism regulating the endocrine system.

ABSTRACT: Phenoxybenzamine-induced sympathetic nervous blockade in dogs was asso-
ciated with diminished resting cardiac output, increased arterio-venous oxygen
difference and smaller bleeding volumes at a given blood pressure. Mean circulatory
hematocrit boefore bleeding was lower in the blocked animals and no significant
decrease in the F-cell factor was observed after bleeding. Sympathetic activity is
beneficial in the acute stage of rapid hemorrhage. The authors thank Dow Corning

Budapest, Orvosi Hetilap, Vol 104, No 27, 7 July 1963, pages 1249-1257.
Abstract: (Authors' Hungarian summary]The authors tested 1-2 hour samples of
urine and the electrolyte and nitrogen excretion of 26 surgical patients
continuously for 36 hours after the operation. Four healthy control indivi-
duals, resting in bed without food or liquid Intake and not exposed to surgery,
were also tested. It was found that the diuresis decreases immediately after
the surgery and i.v. administration of a 5 per cent dextrose solution will
not increase its rate. The Na and Cl excretion also decreases, K excretion
Increases. This change is independent of the serum electrolyte concentration
or of the glomerular filtration rate and has been found in every patient. In-
organic phosphate excretion increases, due to a decrease in the tubular phos-
phate resorbtion. In cases of total thyreoidectomy this phenomenon is not ob-
served and phosphate excretion actually decreases below normal. This is as-
sumed to be due to an increased function of the parathyroids. The 11 excretion
did not Increase, in factit was somewhat lower than in the controls. Deep
barbiturate anesthesia delayed these changes during the sleep but they deve-
loped after awakening. It is concluded that the postoperative changes in wa-
ter and electrolyte metabolism are primary, due to the surgery, and they may
have a common central mechanism due to the function of several endocrine or-

Title :Toxicity of Sodliim Fi~oride to Timber-Destroying Fungi
when Used as an Antiseptic for Lumber of Different Varieties.

Abstract : The study of NaF toxicity to woody tissues was conducted on
birchy aspen, linden, fir and cedar. The woody tissue of
pine, on which the effect of sodium fluoride texicity is
known, servec as a control. The determination of biological
resistance of sodium fluoride-antisepticized woody tissue
of different varieties was conducted with 4 species of
timber-destroying fungi: Coniophora cerebella (Pers.)
Schroet; Serpula. lacrymans (Wulf.) S.F. Gray, Coriolus
vaporarius (Fr.) Bond. et Sing. and Fomitopsis pinicola (SW)
Darst. (nomenclature by the system of A.S. Bondartsev and
R.A. Zinger). The tests were conducted by the VIAM method
(wood sawdust) with some changes. Tests showed a differeace
in NaF dose-size for woody tissues of different varieties.

For birch woody tissue the dose limit for C. cerebella is
0.42% of the dry antiseptic on absolute dry wood weight; for
cedar, linden and aspen, 0-527-0-577%; for pine 0.756%
and for fir 1-003%. In testing on woody tissue of one
variety no differences in dosage limits for teflted species of
timber-destroying fungi were found. At the same time, a
study was conducted on the possibility of wood destruction
by timber-destroying fungi with high original moisture in
woody tissue. The data. show that with development of aerobic
fungi the destruction of woody tissue proceeds intensively
even under conditions of high moisture.
