These data can beused in plotting diagrams for selecting a gas laser resonator with a given number of difference frequencies in a definite region of the spectrum. The particular case of the selection of dimensions for the resonator Of a laser intended for use in a phototelemeter as a light source was investigated. If the radiation modulation has a frequency of approximately 10 Mcps, then the difference frequencies snould be eliminated in the range from 0 to 50 Mcps. The length of the resonator should be at least 0.2 m; it should not exceed 0.4 m. The mirrors can have curvature- r ad ii oi 0.5, 1, and 2 m. When fnirrors with curvature radii of 0.1 or 0.2 m are used, any length of resonator in the range from 02. to 0.4 m can be selected. Vnen mirrors with a curvature radius of 0.5 m are used, the optimum resonator length is 10.3 m. A reduction of the resonator length up to 0.2-0.25 m is possible only when 2 UDC: 621.375.9 MFC, Mi,-czvslaw Blectrcreduction of uranium (VI) compounds in carbonate solutions. Reduction with metallic ra. was chosen by the Instytut badarf j2dro-vpjch PAN (Nuclear Research Institute PAS). The reaction is exothermic to the extent of -134 kcal/ mole U and theoretically occurs at 22400C; in practice the temp- erature is lower, depending on the scale of the process, heat itial reduction losses etc. In s were carried out or, a small scale ?l kg UF4) in the apparatus shoun in Fig. 1, consisting of a steel, water-cooled cyiinder (10, closed by a lid (2) with Card 11S 2413.3 Production of uranium, P/046/60/005/009/004/006 D241/D302 an opening (1) to allow the hot vapors to escape. The steel reactor (9) was placed inside a second cylinder (3), on a SUD- port (6), and was lined with flMorite (10). The apparatus was filled with gas Inlets (12) and uutlets (7 8) and with a tube (4) for the electrical contncts which initiated the reaction. The lining was prepared method evolved at the Instytut chemii nJ,eorgani-cznej w GI.L.w-teach (Inorganic Chemistry Institute at Gliwice). Natural flourite was crushed to less than 1 mm, leached with aq.HF, washed with distilled water and dried. Fluo- rite flour was then mixed with the minimum quantity of 1%0 starch solution in water, rammed into position and dried, raising the temperature to --3000C over a few days. The lining was shaped to form a funnel-like cavity inside the reactor. A fluorite or graphite crucible was placed at the bottom to receive the molten U. The reactants were deposited, on a supporting thin Pd sheet, in the conical part of the reactor cavity, above the U receptacle, in alternate layers (or mixed) using a 20 - 30% excess of Ca shavings. The charge was hand-rammed and a Kanthal wire beater, Card 2/C 24133 P/046/60/005/009/004/006 Production of uranium... D241/D302 thickly covered with a mixture of Mg powder and KC104, was laid on top. Technical quality chemicals were used as the starting materials The reaction was initiated electrically after filling the app ar;tus in argon and took place In a few seconds. Orifice (1) was then closed and the apparatus was cooled under argon. The product was porous (115 g/cm3) and contained non-metallic inclusions. After remelting in a quartz crucible at least 14000C and at 10-3 mm Hg a dense material (17.4 g/cm3) free from in- clusions was obtained. Experience gained with this apparatus allowed Purther investigations, using 10 - 20 kg. charges, to be carried ou t. The starting materials were of known, higher qual- ity to allow an estimate of tht- purIfication attained. High purity Ca was obtained from the Instytut metali nie2elaznych, addzia!r metal! 101rkich v Skawinie Unstit-ute of Non-Ferrous Metals, Lia~it Metal.s Deoartment in Skaw ina). The metal. was used in the'f0M 01 _-nav-ings, .3 film. Lftlclt, a few cm. wide and 8 rnm long. RedUctiolis were carrIed out at a pressure of 1 mm Hg. 4 and 8.5 k2. ingots of U were obtained, the latter beipg non-por- ous and free from slag, of density 17.9 g/,cm3. The amounts of Card 3/5 24133 Production of uranium... P/0)46/60/005/009/004/006 D24i./D302 impurities in the U are tabulated. 99% yJe.lds were obtained. It is stressed that the ingots were not entirely homogeneous chemicalj,~ and were not of "nuclear purity". Remelting under vacuum would improve the product but Fe, Cu, Ni and Si would remaln In comparatIvely high concentrations. He states that even with the observance of all sefety precautions the replacement of a wire rope by his procedure takes altogether 1 hour 50 minutes, instead of the 7 hours allowed for this operation. Within this time it is possible to complete all operations necessary to install the new rope and remove the old. An additional 2 hours and 50 minutes are needed to complete auxiliary operations beforehand. The authors suggested changing the old suspension unit. Two wedges working on the self-wedging principle and protecting the roof from sagging are shown in Fig. 2. On the basis of long operation, the following advantage3 were established: (1) The Initial fastening of' the roof' Is made after hammering out the supporting forms before primary heating. (2) There is no need for Intermediate fastening of the roof during operation between repairs. (3) Considerable economy in hangers and wedges Is achieved due to repeated use of them after general overhauling. Card 1/4 There are 2 figures. Card 2/4 Fig. 1. The purpose of the experi- .-ment was to ftease the accuracy of-distmce measuremerits with such a range finder and to permit its use under daylight conditions. Anather advantage of the laser is that it delivers a beam of,much narrower spectral width. The gas was a mixture of helium and neon operating at 6328 A and delivering not less than 1 mW.
