ABSTRACT: It is of interest to clarify the question in how far the ,( ly
meric state of ribonucleic acid is necessary in order to
guarantee the normal course of the process of breat1,in,-,- and
of the connected phosphorylation and renewal of the cytoTlas
matic protein complex. There is no doubt that nucleoproteidg
form the basis of the internal cellular structures, and t~ie
ribonucleic acid participates in the biosyrthesis of proteins
It has been shown in a previously published scientific ~d,,~er
on this topic that the addition of ribonuclease to the incu-

reduce the process of breathing together with t'r.e phos,.hory~
lation, in spite of the depolymerizing effects of this enzy:..e.
During investigations of the phosphorus renewal in thin acid
by P it was also seen that the total radioactivity of the
ribonucleic acid hardly decreased whereas the specific radio-
activity sharply increased, and this in spite of the only
small quantity of ribonucleic acid preserved in the poly-
meric state. As these results had been obtained by fractionat-
ing the ribonucleic acid in accordance with Schmidt-Tann-
hauser, the author of the paper under review wanted to ver:L
fy that method, and even more so as that method has been
criticized recently. These fractionating results were com-
pared to the -results obtained with the aid of the reliable
Ogur method (extraction by 1 n chloric acid) and those ob-
taind by the Schmidt-Tannhauser method. It was seen tl,at ri-
bonucleic acid that had been insulated by application cf
thelatter method really was strongly contaminated with
foreign phosphorus. Formerly, its existence had led the authf-,r
of the paper under review to the incorrect conclusion with
respect to the metabolic heterogeneity of the ribonucleic
Card 2/4 acid in the cytoplasmatic extract. However, its preservation

On the Significance of the Polymeric Condition of Ribonuc:Lic Acid for the
Renewal of Protein Complexes of Cytoplasmatic Structures
in the polymeric state is of profound importance for the
protein renewal in the extractl this was proved in special
experiments. The experiments were conducted with an extrac-
tion from the rind substance of rabbit kidneys. As can be
seen from Table Nr 3 in the paper under review, the 50-75%
depolymerization of the ribonucleic acid leads to a sharp
retazdation of the methionin inclusion into the proteins of
the extraction. This inclusion, however, represents the ex-
pression of a truly metabolic procese, which depends on the
normal course of the tissue breathing. Addition of yeast
ribonuclease considerably weakens the influence of the
ribonuclease on the inclusion of methionin into the proteins.
In this context, the depolymarization of the ribonucleic
acid is not hampered. The significance of the ribonucleic
acid for the renewal of protein and for protein biosynthesis
becomes clearer and clearer. But when attempts are made to
put the existing concepts into concrete shape, scientists
Card 3/4 differ fundamentally in their views. According to some

On the Significance of the Polymeric Condition of Ribonucleic Acid for the
Renewal of Protein Complexes of Cytoplaamatic Structures
scientists, the ribonucleic acid is a compound with taacro-
energetic phosphoric bonds and it is in a position to direct-
ly yield the energy for the protein biosynthesis. It follows
from earlier observations made by the author of the paper
under review that in the ribonucleic acid fraction of the
bacteria there can be found a phosphorus which can be easily
hydrolyzed. Another point of view, confirmed by direct ex-
periments, seems to be mare probablet namely that the entran--ce
of different amino acids into the protein macromolecule is
caused by the specific interaction of the former with certain
sectors of the polynucleic chain of the ribonucleic acid.
