Hartmann and Couette flows are considered in detail aince they yield analysis. It is shown that the characteristic dimensionless parame- ter in such problems is the generalized Hartmann number M. This number conta-ins typi- cal flow velocity and is influenced by the exponent value in the power law. ror fluids v,ith the exponent less or greater than unity, the flow velocity determines M (in the c-pposite sense for the two cases). Only for unity exponent can the number M be used as velocity independent. The effect of the transverse magnetic field on the fluid flow is analyzed and it is shown that a critical number, Mcr' exists. For M ~1- Mcr quasi-solid regions occur (i. e., liquid velocity is unchang-I over the channel cross UDC: 538.4 Card 1/2 ACC INR, AP6034582 I;ection). -Inis is due to the interaction of the non-Newtonian properties of the Ii- Iquid with the magnetic fields, for which the authors propose the name "magnetic plas- ticity". The two types of motor of particular interest from the standpoint of windin- distribution are single-phase motors in which the auxiliary winding for resistance or capacitan-ce starting is disconnected after starting, and 2apacitor 7ric~ors vrit*ti Dn~_ or two capacitors which are left iii circLi-ft v;!--1sr rurL-1.'L_~ The main requirements of single-phase dis~:.-Jl'outed are then stated. The initial starti.,t~ t~,,-.i-ie :ius,~ -cE aC]e there must not be serious diminution iii the start'l-e toi-j,~ at particular speeds as the motor vu.i3 spt-ed, ;I-ie w,~nd- ings must be easy to manufacture and must no~ require addit-4-on- al insulation, as may occur in ~wo layer windings, and finally it is desirable that the span should be short as this hellis to keep the size of the end windings down and helps to make t1ae Card 1/6 0 S,W/144- 5~1,-l 1- -3/17 Single Phase Distributed "Sine" Windi,-,Cs for Frocti)nal I, Induction Motors machine short. Single-phase distributed windingg ;u,e classified into three main tjpes: single layer 7 WO--_Lz,.v r with coils of equal turns and special 'sine" windings 1~i which the coils contain an unequal number of turns, 1W-*L-_c diagrams of the three types of winding for a standard s-rips low power motor used with starting resistance type AOLL-__~,'4 are given in Pigs 3a, b and Y. It wiii be seen from th:~ diagrams that in motors in which the auxiliary windincl is C - disconnected after starting, with the usual ty-pes of s-Ln-,~-_Le layer and two-layer windings in order to make the best _i,;t of the active materials the auxilla-r winding is allorted only a third (or sometimes a quarter~.of the total numbk~:r of slots and two thirds -are occupied by the main wj_adint_;-. in capacitor motors in waich the auxiliary winding 2emains connected to the circuit during running, it is advi~iabie to divide the stator slots equally between the two windings. C:1 Although single layer windings are easy to make and fill the a C1 slots better than two-layer windings, they have the disadvan- tage of creating marked spatial harmonies in the m.m.f. durve. Card 2/6 suv/144-58-11-5/17 Single Phase Distributed "S.-Lae" Windin.gs for Frac~i:)nal H3rse `1111v~x_ Tmduction Motors In two-layer windings using a shortened span of one th.-Lrd pole pitch there is no third harmonic in the m,,m,f, curve of either the main or the auxiliary winding. In single layer windings the third harmonic disappears because the winding is distributed between two thirds of the total number of slots but its amplitude in the m,m.f. of the auxiliary winding is considerable. It will be seen from Table I that with the winding diagrams of Figs 3a and .3q the fifth, seventh and higher harmonics are also Dresent in single layer windin;7-s. Recently so-called sine" windings have come to be used in single-phase fractional horse power induction motors, Viese windings are so-called because the distribution of the (-_-_iduc- tors in the slots is such as to ensure that the spatial. aij- tribution of m.m,f. is approximately einuBoidal and so t-,nere- fore, is the induction in the machine air gap. Th~~s does not consider the effect of tooth harmonics on the Zj-y distribution in the air gap. In "sine" windings thLe tors of both main and auxiliary windings are distributed ~,e- tween all the slots on the stator circumference, An advanta.-e of the "sine" type winding is that a.U the coils of encr. of Card 3/6the windings are in one layer only, and it is preLerable to SOV1144- 58-11- 5/1, Single Phase Distributed "Sine" Windings for Fracti~~.aal Hol:-:se Induction Motors keep the starting wi-ndi-ng in the upper layer. It is, course, difficult to make coils with different nirabers Di turns but there are advantages that fully compensate for A winding diagram of a "sine" winding for a motor type AOLB-11/4 is given in Fig 3a , The principal theoretical assumptims in designing "sine" windings for sin-le-ph&-,e fractional h.p. induction motors are then considered, kn ideal sine-wave distribution of conductors around a sta,-jr surface is of course impracticable. However, as will. be seen from the diagrams in Fig 5, several approximations are tliat improve the m.m.f. wavo ahape and tho moot favoi.o%al Ir -is ~7 a trapezoidal distribution of conductors, as shovin in FJL.-. , The presence of sloto naturally complicates the distributu`_Dn, nevertheless, the conductors can be distributed in the slots in such a way that the m.m.f. curve is practically sinusoidal. With ordinary distributed windings simple formulae are avail- able for calculating the ampli, tude and winding factors of higher harmonics but the matter is much more complicated in Card 4/6 SOV/144-58-11-5/17 Sing,le Fhase Distributed "Sine" Windi-n-s for Fraczional Horse Power Induction Motors special "sine" windings with different numbers of turns, Curves of the spatial distribution of m.m.f. are then derived, see Figs 7a and ?jb. Selection of the best distribution of conductors in the slots is then considered. Various cases of conductor distribution in the slots are considered with reference to Figs 91 10v 11, 12 and 13. The m.m.f. curve approximates most closely to a sine-wave when the distribut- ion is trapezoidal as shown in Figs 12 and 13. The best distribution is one in which the third harmonic is absenT, and the fifth and seventh are small. The necessary winding condition is expressed as a formula and Appendices 1 a:-,d 2 consider the application of the conditions to particuiar ex2mples. The method of obtaining the m,m.f. distritur-Lon is then explained. The procedure of designing "sine" w-L-ad- ings is then described. Table 2 gives pole pitcli values for various numbers of poles and slots. The table is ex- amined and winding conditions are deduced. To ob- tain nearly sinusoidal mmf distribution, 3rd, 5th and 7th harmonics should be eliminated. Equating the above Eq.
