,Xhl2FI (both 12% Cr) and AX-M (61 Cr) steel . Data are given for changes in hardness
after que hi t. oil and in air, as a f tion of quenching temperature. With in-
crease-rim uen;Alamperature, the hardnesnKcise, reached a maximum and then fell; the
maximum for all steels was 63-65 Rc. The tenperature ranges In which the maximum was
reached were 1030-10700C for Xhl2rl, 1010-10700C for Xhl2K,, and 960-IOSOOC for IMBF.
The. ltmering In hardness for temperatures above the Imaxinval range were the result
of the increase in retained austenite. Voline changes after quenching and tempering
were determined an cylindrical specimens of 100 mm length and 10 w diameter. These
specluens were heated to the optima temperature and quenched In air, oillk and oil

heated to 160'DC, Data were giVen for the change in length as a :Function of tempering
temperature and it was found that air cooling resulted in the smallest dimensional
changes: In the case of Kh6BF the length change wait 30-35% lower after air cooling
while. for Xhl2Fl steel the charge was 2 times lower when empared to oil quenching,
with or without beating the oil. This was explaineil on the basis of decreased tetra-1
gonality of the martensite, after the slower quench In air. With regard to the warpage
of parts male Mrom high- steels, it was estimated that the stress levels reached by
oil quenching were up t 6 times greater than by air quenching. To study the influ-
ence of crack formationj Ing quenching, specially designed samples were used, in

distance fi-to -the perimeter of the center hole. Thene samples wer4i quenched from
10500C into water, oil and air respectively. The samples quenched into air did not
have cracks. The oil quenched sample had cracks across two of the hole boundaries,
separated 0.5 eind 1.0 mm from the tmnter hole perimeter. The water quenched sample
exhibited cracl-s across all hole Ix)undaries (up to 4 am from center hole perimeter).
There was even a crack through the sample itself. All samples were quenched to a high
har,Jnes's (mare than 60 %). Bond tests showed that air cooling retsulted in higher
strength thmi oil cooling even upon tempering. It wa~ recommended. -that air cooling
