widthwise), the speed of rollingj etc. In the second stop, thehot-rolling rd.11
and the factors affecting the rolling out were studied. New rolling schedules
were developed and the existing technological schedules were investigated., The
pressure of UB metal on the rolls, the degree of reduction per pass, the tem-
perature and profile of the rolls, and the strip thickness were measured. The
thermal expansion of the rolls, their flattening, and the mangitude of roll bend-
ing under the pressure of rolling were considered. Special devices were con-
strVcted for measuring the roll bendint and temperature. Formulas are given for
calculating the flattening and thermal expansion of the rolls. Results of the
rolling of sheets according to the old and new technological processes are
analyzed, tabulated data are presented) and curves representing the roll profile

TEXT-. The semi-automatic portable apparatus described consists of
three units; an electronic strain meter typeaAA(EID)-3m, telemeter-
ing switch type Arj (DP)-100, and control desk n'Y (PU)-100. The
number of channels is 100. The application of the measuring signal
to the strain meter is made automatic by means of the distance
switch which is actuated by an impulse from the control desk. The
reading is taken off visually from a moving coil indicator dial.

diagonally in the measuring bridge. The measuring circuit is de-
signed for used with resistance wire strain gauges having a resis-
tance of 60-240 ohms and sensitivity towards strain of 1.7-2.2. The
range of measurement is 5 x 10-6 to 5 x 10-3 and the sensitivity
is 5 x 10-6 relative strain units. The error is t 5 x 10- rela-
tive strain units, (i.e. without the additional error due to pickup
circuits). A description is also given with a block diagram, of a
fully automatic installation equipped with a digital printer, whose
accuracy is 0.1%. The installation's measuring bridge circuit is
recurrently balanced by means of the compensating saw tooth voltage.
The axis of the compensating rheostat is equipped with a perforated
disc, Through the holes in the disc light bean is passed on the
photoelement. An electronic counter counts the number of pulses
which pass from the photoelement to the compensating circuit, the
amount of compensation being proportional to the measured quantity.

ABSTRACT: In order to improve the operation of the VVR-M reactor in-
stalled at the Physicotechnical Institute im. A. F. Ioffe, some changes
we.re made in the number and'disposition of channels and in the rearran~-:~-
ment of thermal column. The reactor was originally provided viith 9
horizontal channels located in concrete shielding. In 1961, a cliannel,
11o. 10, was added at a distance of 1390 mm from the core center. In
3.963, two channels, Nos. 11 and 16, were bored as tang.,ent to thAi ber-
yllium reflector. Such a tangent position reduced the effect of gamma
background on irradiated samples. The thermal column (3040 irun long),
originally composed of six graphite disks, was then reconstructed. The

TEXT: During sinttering of zircon with lime in the presence of calcium
chloride compounds are formed which are easily soluble in acids. It was assumed
that they were composed of silicate and calcium zirconate. However, the material
composition of the cake was as yet not investigated and the formation of the
aforementioned compounds was not confirmed. The authors used data of roentgeno-
structural analyses of calcium zirconate made in 1953 by E. K. Keller and N. A.
Godina to study the material composition of the zirconium-lime cake in order to
confirm the a~~sumed presence of calcium zirconate, X-ray and crystallo-optical
analyses showed that the cake oonsisted of a basic glassy amorphous substance
which did not react to polarization light, The glassy substance was decrystal-
lized by holding the crushed cake at 1,000 - 1,1000C for I hour and subsequerit
slow cooling. Crystallo-optical analyses of the decrystallized specimens showed
