ABSTRACT: In order to explain the part played by alcohols an intermediates
i.n the oxidation of hydrocarbons at low temperatures, the
authors investigated the behavior of methanol in propylene
oxidation. The presence of methanol in propylene oxidation has
already been -found bir A. F. Lukovnikov (Ref 2)_,_ it was, how-
ever, not quant1tativoly determined. Methanol was determined
here by the method of isotope dilution (Ref 5) (maximum error:
4-50/4). The concentralion of formaldehyde was determined polaro-
graphically (background; 0.1 n LiOH). Experiments were made un-
der.staiic conditioni3 with the following mixture: - 50% 021

variation in the concentration and the specific activity of
methanol during thR reaction (Fig 1) indicates that methanol
is formed and also 0()nsumedo The latter is'also indicative of
the presence of rad ioactive oarb on in fcrmaldehyde, CO and
CO 2' By graphic differentiation it was found (Fig 3) that
the formation and consumption of methanol is most intense in
the region of cold flames. Calculations of the rate of form-
aldehyde formation from methanol have.shown that only a small
part of formaldehyde was produced from methanol (Table 1),
apparently no more tl~an 5~,. The scheme of reactioA according
to which methanol is formed only by acetaldehyde (Rafe 89 9)
is insufficient sinca also other reactions take place which

TEXT: In this "Letter to the Editor", the authors report that they
detected hydrogen atoms in burning mixtures of H 2 and 02 at 3 - 20 mm Hg
by means of electron paramagnetic resonance. The experiments were made
immediately above the lower flash. point. After heating to 550 - 6000C,
H2 and 02 were introduced into a quartz tube through the resonator of the
epr spectrometer. A doublet with a g-factor v 2 and a splitting of
,,,500 oersteds were recorded. In a stoichiometric mixture of hydrogen and
oxygen, the signal power increases by the tenfold if the total pressure
is reduced from 16 to 8 mm Hg. This is explained by the quicker flow of
the gas mixture at lower pressure. At 8 mm. Hg, the signal amplitude
increases with increasing hydrogt?n concentration. At present, the authors

TEXT. The concentrations of hydrogen atoms in the zone of a
rarefied hydrogen flame were measured by the electronic T
paramagnetic resonance methodi the depbfidence of these
concentrations on the conditions of the reaction course was
ixivestigated. The burning Of H2 was conducted at,6oo *c under
3-6 mm Hg. These conditions prevented stoppages of the reaction
chains. Atomic H was determined for different degrees of
consumption of H2 during burning of the following mixturesi
4H2 +'021 5H2 + 02' 3H2 + 029 2H2 + 02, and H2 + 02-
The results were co mpared with the values of H concentration
obtained from theoretical calculations using Semenov's equation.

concentration of H is considerably smaller than that calculated by bli
using Eq.(8). This indicates that k/k P21
where k5 is a constant for the recombination of-OH radicals on
the walls. For the burning of mixtures containing less than 8" of
H21 although the concentration of OH radicals in the reaction zone
is smaller by two orders of magnitude titan the concentration of
H atomsj it in not possible to neglect their recombination since
this leads to considerable errors in the kinetic calculations for

factors on, the qW et operation of high-speea rotors and to evaluateWgil bearin-
operation. The experiments were performed or a rotor consisting of -sl~. ~, exl,~&-Ision
turbine 2 and centrifugal compressor 3 supported on radial bearings 4 which wer4E'

(0.001-0.00 and fitted into body 6 with a clearance of 0.003--0.008 mm. Two

to calculate the properties of the type of conductivity was checked on Fe-Cu and
Ni-Ag compositions. Both formulae are in a satisfactory agreement with experi-
mental data on electric conductivity and magnetic permeability. The authors
analyze the causes of deviations from the theory i,fnich are connected with the for-
mation of partially matrix systems or the imperfection of interparticle contacts.
The authors present also results of investigating electric conductivity in the
Cu-W system.

Combined use of electron microscopy, color metallography,
and magnetic inetallography for structural analyses of

Boo 0 for 10 hrs was subjected to phase analysis by electron microscopy,
color metallography, and magnetic metallography. Phase analysis could
not be carried out with an optical microscope. MagnetometallogrAphic
examination revealed a magnetic (S-farrite) phase and a non-magnetia
(austenite) phase. Electron diffraction studies showed that the carbides
established by etching with ferrocyanide had the composition-Me 23 G*6with
a lat~ico parame 'ter a - 10.5 9. The electron microscope revealed
particles with a size of 0. 11A~ btt tho grain boundaries of the hardened
