The thermal expansion was measured in a vacuum chamber (10-2 mm Hg) in which carbide samples (8 m in diameter and 15-18 mm in length) were heated electri- cally. The carbide samples were prepared by hot-pressing technique and the temperature was measured with an.OPM-19 micropyrometer. The individual carbide samples had the Card 2/2. The spectra were recor ed f d photographically. ~The LQ2 and L_, lines of europium were used as the comparison lines. !The.structure'40"f the Lill absorption edges of samarium in SmB6 was investigated in the interval from -120 to +',OOC. An analysis of the :ftne structure indicates that the samarium &toms exist in SmB in two different valence states, which are statistically distributed in crystallographically equivalent positions of the lattice of the compound. The absorption spectrum of samarium in SmB. has several features distinguishing it from hexaborides of other rare-earth metals. 6.nef among these features i-- the presence of an additional ,absorption band whose maximum is shifted by about 7 eV towards the :longer wavelengths conpared with the principal maximum. This hypo- thesis is confirmed by plotting the theoretical absorption C-arves corresponding to the different relative contents of the divalent and trivalent samarium, and a corresponding analysis. It is estimated that the divalent samariurr. may &-nount to -(35 + 5)% of the total number of samarium at~-irs. Orig. art. has: 3 figures. ~car,d 2/3 aim"' zY L 12445-65 ACCESSION NR-. A decrease in the statistical weight of sp3 -hybridization of Si electrons causes rhombic distortion of the structure. With an increase in the deficit of Si atoms in lanthanum disilicides, there is an increase in the specific electric resistivity and Hall's coefficient due to filling of the 3p-band of silicon. The necessary numbur. of pulses is derived considering the probability of placing the man value in both limiting cases of the assumed binomial distribution.
