Abstmet: 0.&% of As and traces of Ni, Co and Or were
revealed in mud-.Uke linonite deposits (35% of
Fe by dry weight) of the spring. The spring is
coordinated to the South-Western part of the ser-
pentine mountain range Wolfstein (a region of
widespread amphibolites). The rocks in that
range contain from 0.1 to 0.25% of Ni. It is
assumed that the water of the spring rises in

TEXT- An Investigation was carried out upon the influence of admixtures of
As (0.13 - 1% As) upon the mechanical (5b, HB, ak) and the antifriction character-
istics of bearing alloy ;, 10 with composition (in %): Sn 9.5 - 10.5, Sb 14.5 -
15-5,*Cu 0.5 - 1.5, Pb the remainder in which according to the Polish standard,
UD to 0.15% As is tolerated. it is shown that admixtures of As up to 0.6 - 0.8%
raise the 6b and a-k, while the HB is then somewhat lowered. Abrasion tests of
the specimens in conjunction with steel shafts under static and dynamic loadings 4,1-K
of various magnitude and durations have indicated that the alloy with 0.4% As
Is more abrasion resistant than the alloy with 0.13% As or L 10, produced from
pure metals. The conclusion is drawn that admixtures of As In the alloy b 10

Abstract : To ascertain the grounds for the method of trappinc; fields,,
the nicronigrations of the Colorado beetle vere studies.
The microniarations wore accomplished by fligbt, and also
by mviu_t on foot. The beetle flies, as a rule, acainst
the winds and only accidentally with the wind. The miGTat-
ing beetles inhabit fields vhich are close to their hiber-
nation habitats. When the latter are close to potato
fields the migration is accomplished on foot, the outside
beds being populated at first. At the beginning of spring-
mi~rations, thd beetles appear first of all on open fields,
near the yester-year potato fields; the beetles appear

The magnetostriction constant of polycrystalline Ni samples was
measured as afunction of the value of plastic deformation (tension) The appa-
rent value of magnetostriction constant is equal to (-36.1�0.25)-10- Absolute
values of magnetostriction constant increase slightly (by '-s,1%)-at small defor-
mations and show a linear decrease at large deformations ( -5%-at 8 = 30%). With
deformed samples a spread of values (-k%) is observed which canriot be explained
by an inaccuracy of measurements. There-are 6 references.

ABSTRACT: The spontaneous magnetisation in the neighbourhood of
the Curie point is usually determined by indirect methods
and these can be sub-divided into the following four
groups:
1. Method utilising the quadratic relation of certain
phenomena (the even effects) on the magnetisation;
2. Method of lines of equal magnetisation;
3. Method of anomalies of non-magnetic properties;
4. Method of thermo-dynamic coefficients, proposed by
. Belov and Gorjaga (Ref 4).
4he aim of the work described in this paper was to
;;evaluate the applicability of each of these methods for
determining the spontaneous magnetisation in the
neighbourhood of the Curie point and to attempt to explain

is possible to determine from the graphs of the dependence
of magnetisation changes of the resistance on the square
value of the total magnetisation the correct value of the
spontaneous magnetisation, taking into consideration the
influence of "technical" magnetisation. It is shown that
the deviations fzom the linegr characteristic of the
functions 4j!jRkP~-) (ora T(11-) of the magneto-heat effect)
observed for certain materials can be explained by the
non-homogeneity of the material. Equally, the form of
the thermal dependence of the spontaneous magnetisation
can be explained which,in contrast to the theoretical
assumptions,indicates some sort of extension of the
spontaneous magnetisation above the Curie point. A method
is described which permits evaluating the degree of non-
homogeneity of the material from the shape of the curve
of the thermal dependence of the spontaneous magnetisation.
This paper is based on experimental results obtained
during Candidate Dissertation work carried out by the
Card 3/4 author at the Moscow State 'University.

exchangers. Table 1 shows the amount of cooling that
the gas obtains in engine D2. The thermo-dynamic
efficiency of the engine is defined as the ratio of the
real change in specific enthalpy to the change in
enthalpy in purely adiabatic processes. Table 1 is based
on published results (Refs 5,6 and 7). The aim in
designing a liquifier is to obtain a maximum output of
liquid helium. k rough guide is obtained from
considering the enthalpy. A.quantity "1411 of gas is
compressed to pressure IIPII and then expanded through the
expansion valve. A quantity I'm", to be adiabatically
expanded in the engine, is compressed to pressure Ilp".
The specific enthalpy of gas under pressure IIPII at
temperature IIT111 is Ilipl"~ The specific enthalpy of
the liquid is 111011, e is the yield in liquid helium,
i.e. the amount liquified during the Joule-Thomson
expansion of the quantity 'IMII-of gas. The balance of
Card enthalpies gives Eq (1). The yield can be increased

63)14 OK by reducing the vapour pressure of the nitrogen.
This reduces the denominator in Eq (1) by 20%. Eq (1)
s.eems to indicate that the engines should work at the
highest possible temperature because then jail and Ai"
are largest. One must not forget, however, that the
temperature T2 must be sufficiently low as otherwise
no liquification will occur. This fact is not obvious
from Eq (1) and a more detailed.analysis is needed to
determine the optimum working conditions. A detailed
analysis of the expansion valve and the heat exchanger
Vl can be found in Ref 8. Fig 2 shows the yield of
liquid helium for an expansion valve under varying
conditions of temperature and pressure. Fig 2 was
obtained from values given in Ref 6 and makes less
idealised assumptions than Ref 8. The working points of
the engine will be determined by considerations of
Card energy. The balance of energies is given by Eq (3).
Useful analytical expressions are not easy to find and a
3/1+ graphical method is recommended. An example of a
liquifier with only one engine is worked out. We assume
a starting temperature of 80 OK where P 15 atm and

p = 5 atm. The working points can be found by solving
Eqs (21) and (3). Fig 3 shows e(TO for an expansion
valve with Joule-Thomson expansion from 15 atm to 1.3 atm.
Assuming the thermo-dynamic efficiency of the engine
I = 0.8, we obtain curve 1 of Fig 4, showing that the
maximum yield is obtained if 20% of the total amount of
gas is used for Joule-Thomson expansion. As a further
example, a liquifier with 2 engines is considered under
similar conditions to the one-engined liquifier; the
two-engined liquifier produces a 65% higher yield. The
maximum theoretical yield for a. liquif ier with one bellows
engine eM = O~034 kg/kg. With two enginesq it is
0.055 kg/kg. Heat losses into the surroundings have been
Card neglected.
