Shadow projections of an air spark generated by focusing, a laser beam ~SOURCEt Optika I spektroskopiya, v. 20, no. 2, 1966, 374-375 JOPIC IAGS: shadowgraph photography, laser photography, laser R and D, spark ,icamera :'ABSTRACT: The authors use the method of shadow projections for photographing a z i spw* produced by focusing a bser bmu in air. The shadow projections were photograph- ;ed in the light emitted by the laser which produced the spark. A delay line was us- !ed for taking photographs at various time3. A diagram of the experimental setup is 'shown in FIR. 1. After rvflection from airrors 5, 6, and 7 the light passed through the spark and exposed photorraphic plate 8,which was protected from daylight fogging by red filter 9. Time delay of the light beam was adjusted by moving mirror 6. The photographs show clearly de- fined bands surrounding the shadow from the spark plasma. Since the laser emission is nearly totally absorbed by the spark plasma, these bands may be considered a dif- fraction pattern and the distance between maxima may be used for deter"ining the di- mensions of the Vasma. Tabulated measurements show that the plasma expands at a rate of about 10 cm/sec in the first 100 nsec. Synchronization of the giant ptilses fr'M the two losers was accomplished by employing the same rotating prism to modulate the regenerntioll of both losers. The two lasers were mounted approximately at right nngles; one Inser viewed the rotating prism directly nnd the other laser viewed it through n 90o re- f lecting prism which wni mounted above the axis of the f ir9t lnsor. The de' ny be- tween the two laser pulses was varied from about 30 tinnosac to 3-4 microsoc by ndjunt- ing the angle between the axes of the two lasers. The meatter of the doiny tinos was 20 to 100 nnnosec and is ascribed mainly to Instability of t1io 25,000 rpm nnrtilar velocity of the rotating prism. The expressions obtained under some simplifying assumptions are Card I/; ACCESSION NR: AT4025290 130 we AV n. -2-4",22 Id and no -lot/ ___7 *;W- IAV exp kg 2-1-K. 'for the minimum and maximum measurable electron density, respective- ly. It is assumed that the threshold of measured light energy is determined by the fluctuations in the number of photoelectrons pro- duced upon qcattering, and that the main sources of noise are the plasma intrins'ic radiation and the light scattered by the various parts of the apparatus. While the latter cannot be evaluated in general form, an estimate made for a specially constructed small dis- charge tube shows that the proposed method can yield 'new data even with currently available equipment. The present paper analyzes the same ieffects in circuits with concentration parameters as shown in Fig. I of the Enclo- sure. The-results of theoretical and ex erimental investigations show that 1) the P parametric detector (PD), and the parametric frequency doubler (PFD) of AM 11F-cir.
