In cases of Irreparable lesions of these nerves a palliative mthod has been proposed to
ensure a functionally favourable position of the hand or foot and which ruvt not be
performed under 18 months to 2 years aSter the lesion of the nerves. The operati-n,
very similar in both circumstsmces, consists esser-tially of the following etai.,es:
longitudinal incision on the back of the hand or foot to uncover all the paralysed extensor
tendons; shortening of these tendons by a winding around the dorsal ligaments of the wrist
in the let cage and around the crossed ligament in the 2nd case; this shortening assures a
strong tension of the tendons. In this was hyperflexion of the h" or foot is prevented
and the position achieved is favourable for the movements determined by the muscles wh"ch
