Abstract: The solubility at 550 was studied in the systems Na2SO4
(I) - K2SO4 (KK) - MgS04 (III) H20 and I - II - HgO.
Crystals of the relation of II I > 3 (3.35 and 3. 0)
were obtained in the latter system. Their x-ray ictures
differ from that of glaserite (3K2SO4.Na2SO4) (IV~, which
allows the authors to consider these crystals as a new
phase forming at higher temperatures. Six crystallization
fields were disclosed in the quaternary system, viz.: 1,
11, NgS04.6H20 (V), Na2SO4.MgSO4.4H20 (VI), K2SO4.149SO4.
4H20 (VII), IV and four nonvariant treble points: 1)
12.96 of 11, 4.05 of 1, 15.64 of III; solid phases of IV,
II, VII; 2) 7.12 of 11, 12.61 of 1, 20.25 of III; solid

ABSTRACT: The conditions of crystallization of schenite-
K so . mgso . 6H 0. were investigated in the five-component

systim K, NA, Yg~jcl' SO -H 0 at 0 . The solubility,
viscosity and 4ensity were iiaterminod in the aystoms
K, Na, Mg 11 3 24 -H 20, K, Mg 11 Cl, SO -H20 and X, Mg, Na11Cl,
so 4-H20 at 0 . In the system K, 141, 149 11so 4-H 2+0 solid
solution of the glaserite type appears in the solid phase.
The equilibrium diagram of the system is characterized by four
ranges of crystallization: schenite- K 2 so 4* 11gso 4* 6H 20 and
the hydrates of the sulfates of K, Na and Mg. Six
crystallization ranges of the following Balts appear in the
system K, !Ag1jCl, SO - 112Ot 9chenite, carnallite -
Card 1/2 KC1. MgCl 2* 6H20-,KCI, 1gS0 4. 7H 20, 'AgCl 2* 6H20 and

determined. The crystallization range of schenite is limited
by six salts: glaserite ( 3K 2so 4' Na2 so4) , KCI, NaCl,
K2so 4' F! 20, mgso 4* 7H20 and Na,S0 4' 10 H20. There are 1) figures,
3 tables, and 4 references, 3 of which are Soviet.

ABSTRACT: The authors wrote this paper on the occasion of the 40th anni-
versary of the existence of the Komsomol. The double salt
glaserite (3K230 4* Na2SO4 ) forms solid solutions with.its com-
ponents Na 2SO4and K2SO 4* The publication data on the tempera-
ture limit-s for the existence-of these solid.solutions deviato.
It was only proved that.the addition of chlorides permits the
existence of glaserite at low temperatures. The investigations
of the authors showed that in the systems K2SO 4 - Ma2SO 4 - U20
and K230 4 - N&2SO 4 - Mg2S04 -H20 no glaserite is formed. In
order to determine the solid phases of the system mentioned

isothermal line was investigated at 00. In contrast to data
from publications (Ref 2) K 2 so4 H20 and Ra 2 so 4' 10H20 were found
to be solid phases. Glaserite is formad only at 00 and only
in the presence of certain Amounts of chlorides (KC1, liscl and
MgCl). It does not orystallize-from the sulphate solutions of
Xv Na and Nge The rang*'of existence of glaeorite 18 found in
the systems IL, 3&1)Cl* 50 4 - B20 and Xp Na, MgjjC1, SO 4 - H2 0
at a chloride concentration of 8-r10% and it increaBes cith
their incrAasing cancantratiom- T1w ar4atallization ranges of
glaserite, potassium sulphats mano)Wftats and-Glauber's salts
were detey-Amed in the flys ampanwA =aplax at 00. The small.
ranga of glasarite pano-trAtas (2onia". I nt the ran e of the

The results are isportant for the production of pure salts
in the processing 6f crude salts of marine origin. There are

ABSTRACT: The statistical principles of the standardization of the quality of
production ar examined by the example of the tire industry. The quality of the
260-20 tireiVof the Moscow, Yaroslav, Omsk, and Yerevan plants is considered. The
quality indices aFro divided into two groups: those with a normal distribution
(tensilA ntrang"J~kmd hardness) and those with a distribution of essentially positive
values (wear, residual elongation, specific elongation, tensile strength in Ismins-
tion between tread and breaker, breaker and carcass, sidevall and carcass, and
between layers of carcass). It is found that the established requirements for the
guaranteed and average mileage of the tires are insufficiently founded, as they do
not reflect the statistical laws in mileage distribution. A final conclusion about

ABSTRACT: In the paper by K. T. Bondarev, V. A. Dubrovskiy, V. V.
Pollyak 1. Ye. 3haplro (ref. 1) the conditi(,ns for tl~.e
produc'.ion of glass types with a high degree of transparency
by using cerium wore investigated. A syetematic inveotigation
of the selective absorption of glass types with cerium oxide
content was carriAd out by Kapnitskiy and Keller. Cerium
oxide is never used alone as coloring substance. In 1919
Taylor proposed a combination of cerium and titanium oxides
for producing yel-l:-vv glass. In a paper froin 1935 it is
among other 9tated that the coloring intensity did not chanee
when the content of Gerium and titanium oxide was increased
This was, however, not proved in the experiments carried out
by the authors and in those by Vargin, Kefoli and Starikova
(1954) at the Stat,~ Institute for Optics. The autlors of

of colorless, alkaliless and alkali-weak gl;~ss types, as

ABSTRACTs The authors investigated in the present paper the influence
of the composition of glass poor in alkali on the spectrum
characteristics of copper- and chromium oxides. Thus it was
possible to work out types of compositions of hoat-resistant
groan color filters. As initial substance the glass previous-
l,v elaborated at the Institut stekle, (Institute of Glass
which is poor in alkali and has the following composition JMW
was used: 61.9% E102; 4,2% MgO; 2% N&201 15-4% CRO; 16-5%
A120 ; 4% (more than 100%) F'. The spectrum characteristics
of glasses within the visible range were determined by an
SF-4 spectrophotometer, and the color coefficients were
measured by means of a UFK-1 colorimeter. Figures I - 4
show the transparency curves of glasses of various compo-
sitions dyed.with copper oxide. In this connection the
authors refer to papers by Vargin and Veynberg. In conclusiono

TEXTs The effect of the non-polar solid substances in dipl~enyl, na hthalln,
and anthrac ne on plastification of polyvinal chloride CrrE-1 (PB-1~ type
and ITO-4 (;F-42 and dependence of the plaatification effect on the chain
length of the non-polar part of some polar plasticizers (dimethyl-, diethyl-,
dipropyl-, and dibutyl-phthalate) werg investigated. The plasticizer was add-
ed to the polymer on rolls at 135-140 C and from the obtained film 2.5-3.0 mm
thick shoots were formed by hot pressing. Compositions of the mixtures with
non-polar plasticizers are given in Tab.1 and properties of the obtained mix-
tures in Tab.2. The results demonstrate that compatibility and plastifica-
tion effect decrease from diphenyl to naphthalin and then to anthracene. This
difference in plastification properties is due to the influence of size and

form of the molecule of the planticizer. Diphonyl has tho beat compatibIlity
because of the elongated shape of its molecule, while naphthalin and especi-
ally anthracene molecules are much bigger, A new effect was observed with
diphenyl-containing mixtures, viz., irreversible strengthening at room tempm-
ature with cold stretching of the sample resulting in unexpectedly high
toughness (141.1 kg/CM2 instead of 80-85 kg/cm2 corresponding to the level of
hardness). The increase in hardness with elongation is demonstrated in Tab.3.
The observed effect of strengthening is apparently caused not only by the
orientation of molecules and better distribution of the plasticizer in the
polymer phase, but also by increasing of the crystal phase in the system poly-
vinyl chloride - diphgnyl during cold stretching. Heating of the strengthen-
ed samples to 100-120 C caused momentarily collaps of the orientation effect
and the material obtained rubberlike elasticity. Effect of the chain length
of the non-polar part of polar plasticizers on plastification was studied on
the following 3 compositions: no. 1 - (in weight parts ) 100 PF-4 resin, 64
plasticizer, 3 calcium stearate (stabilizer)l no.2 - 100 PF-4 resin, 3 calci-

TE(Tt The effect of a, high-frequenoy (19.5 megacycles) current field on sane
plasticized polyvinylahloride compositions was investigated. A considerable im-
provement of physico-chemical and mechanical properties of the polyvinylchloride
film was attained after a 21-minlite high-frequency heating of the mix. Also so-iub-
11ity of the film in low-molecular liquids decreased. Considerations on the mecha-
nism of processes occurring in plasticized polyvinylehloride mixtures durtng high-
frequency heating were presented. High-frequency heating of thermoreactive press-
powders before formation of press-articles is nowadays widely used. Several lite-

Nevertheless simultaneously occurring processes of destruction and cross linking
effected by this treatment were not investigated principally. In the present work
one of the most important plastiz~s - polyvinylahloride (PVC) - was investigated in
relation to this problem. Plasticized compositions were prepared of PVC of the
n6-1 (PB-1) type with dibutylpb:.ha1ee, dibutylsobacinate, dimethylpYjLthalate and
1-nitromethyl-2-ohlorocyclohex--s,no:.-l. The following technological procedure was
carried out: The polymer, plasticizer and the stabilizer were mixed and left
24 hra for ripening at room temperature. T'hen a 1 - 2 am thick layer of the mass
was applied on an aluminum plete and the high-frequency treatment was carried out
by means of a rr-107 (GG-107) generator. The distance between the surface of the
aL%s and the mobile anode was 5 - 7 mm, anodic current 0.34 - 0.40 amp, net Cur-
rent 200 - 250 amp, and a 19.5 megaiyele frequency was applied. Then the masa was
rolled to a 0.25 - 0.30 mm thick film with a front roll at 135 * 20C and a 'r~hck
roll at 120 + 20C, having a friction ratio of 1 1 1.25_. The properties of these
films were tien investigated. The necessary minimum of high-frequency treatment
was determined with a compoeltion containings 100 weight parts of FVC, 64 dibutyl-
phthalate and 1.5 calaium stearate using a treatment of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 or 8

of the M films was effected.by the 2-minute high-frequency heating. In this
case the temperature of the mass increases Just to 60 - 650C by the treatment,
Akle-6 5-minute treatment effeets an increase in the temperature to 1650C. The
high-frequency effect was tested also on other compositions (Table 1) and the ot)-
tained results are presented In Table 2. The improvement of the physical and
nechudcal-properties of all investigated compositions by the 2-minute treatment
is obvious, but the degree of the effect depends on the amount and type of plasti-
cizer. Corresponding tests demonstrated also that the high-frequency treatment
increases considerably the resistance of the plastic films against beazane, wat-4-,

improvement is offeeted by def6rmation of polar groups In the polymer chain X~.-id the
molecule of the plasticizer (inoraasing polarization) resulting in a more intensive

cization of polytetrafluoroethyiene by combining it with IiiCh--
pressure polyethylene. The blending was carried out on rollers

ty. I'Ll.was found that the incorporation of very small proporti-ns
of polyethylene increased the fluidity of the compositions, the
timum results being obtained when blends with 30 - 35 % of P01.1-

in curing polymer materials, polymerizing glass-reinforced plastics,

et cetera. Mixtures of PF-4 resin with a polar plasticizer and
~calcium stearate stabilizer were- subjected to high-f requenty preheating
'under optimum conditions before calendering to form thin films.
Vincosimetric and thermomechanical meas%lrements and differential
thermal analysis showed nearly identical characteristics for high-
1frequency treated and untreated samples*of the same initial composition,
Iregardless of the nature of the plasticizer (phthalic, sebacic.,or
phosphoric acid esters). It was concluded that high-frequency currents
do not induce any fundamental modification of the chemical structure
,or kinetic properties in macromolecules of the polymer. The previously
;observed improvements in physicomechanical characteriR tics, -as well as
iresistance to aging and to low-molecular-weight liquidsare attributed
,to accelerated diffusion of the plasticizers into the bulk of the
1polymer and gelation.. Such a degree of gelation is reached that the

were obtained with d1butylsebacate. After high frequency heating (19-5 megacycles,.
anode current 0.34-0.40 amps, grid current 200-250 amps, for 2 minutes at a distame
of 5-7 Mm from sample surface) the plasticized PVC was more stable to thermal oxi-
.dative aging (tensile strength increased more and elongation decreased less) due to
more uniform distribution of the plasticizer in the polymer. A comparison was made
.of dibutylphthalate, dibutyluitrophthalate and dibutylehlorophthalate on PVC
.samples aged for 1 year at -5 to 24C, and 55-75% relative humidity. Dibutylnitroph-
ithalate increases the indexes mo,st (almost doubling the tensile strength and elon-
,gation) In ecuiparlson to the other two compounds. The changes with time of the
;properties of the nitro- and chloro-coutaining plasticizers are much slower than
:'with dibutylphthalate itself. This is attributed especiaLly to the compatibility

ABSTRACT: Structural changes in Si02-Al2O3-BaO-TiO2 glasses caused by thermal treat-
ment were studied. The changes in glass properties as a function of thermal treatment
.for 2 hours at various temperatures are shown in figure 1. It was found that thermal
treatment Of Si02-Al2O3-BaO-TiO2 glasses leads to irreversible structural changes which
hinder crystallization processes. These structural changes are exothermal in nature
and they are caused by coordinative rearrangements of aluminum ions within the glass

Abstract Computations of vertical velocities by the field of
pressure data give positive practical results, but are
sometimes deficient because of voluminous calculations
and the dependence on weather changes. This has been
surmounted by the method of K. I. Kashin who showed that
the forecast of precipitation can be made if the
ascending current is systematic and over large areas. A
simplified method is presented for computation of the
horizontal divergence of air currents necessary for
calculating the vertical velocity in the field of the
wind. A nmogram covering European Russia and a correspond

ABSTRACT: The investigation was performed on the premise that showers are
the results of instability of the stratification of temperature and
moisture both along a front and within a homogeneous air mass. The
stratification observed in the layer from 1-1.5 to 5 km is normally
always stable (indifferent stability relative to saturated air), inasmuch
as in a disturbed atmosphere convection quickly destroys any unstable
layers that might be forming. The stratification of convectively-
unstable layers, which obtains prior to the inception of convection in
a homogeneous air mass, is determined by horizontal transfer, ver-
tical movements, and inflow of heat due to turbulence, radiation,
local pressure changes, and the kinetic energy of the air particles.
Such a stratification can be obtained graphically. In the calculation

convective activity one must take into account the temperature changes due to the
influence of vertical movements and those due to ground friction, frontal frict:on
and the nonstationary nature of the currents. In the construction of the moislure
distribution curves, changes therein due to evaporat:on from the ground surface
must be taken into account. Conditions conduc.~e to the formation of showers are
examined for the case of a slowly mn~ ng I -roni and an occluded cyclone. It is
established that on a sharply def''ned front the temperature and moisture str.t
ification is al,-a)-s more unstab:e than :n the surrounding frontal zone or within
the air masses separated by the front 'tseif; here the upper boundary of the sur-
flice frontlorms a con% ecti% ely -unstable !aVer 100- WO m thick, while the duration
of the convection coincides with the duration of the frontal passage in the N Clrlt~
of the observation point. The ascending currents in the frontal zone are alwavs
more intense than in the air masses separated by the front; their velocities rrld~'
vary between a few centimeters to several meters per second. In the post frontal
cold sector of a cyclone, wher-F-1h the absence of frontogenetic conditions there
exist significant pressure and temperature gradients, convective instability
relative to temperature and moisture is due to horizontal transfer and heating of
the air and of the earth's surface. In that case a convectively unstable layer
100-300 rn. thick is located near the earth's surface. while the duration of the
