Title Concerning Fatigue Fracture of Non-Metallic Crystals Orig Pub Uch. zap. Kuybyshevsk. gos. ped. in-t, 1956, vyp. 14, 139-143 lbstract Investigations of,the endurance of monocrystals of gypsum and mica show that fatigue damage to gypsum begins most frequently in the appearance of crf~ks on the side surface of the specimen; these initial cracks develop further into entire bundles of cracks of a most varied form. Outside flaws lead to destruction of the specimens only in those cases when they are due to da:mage to the total cleavage surfaces. Fatigue fracture by recipro- cating twisting is characterized by the presence of a small crack in the fracture Lines, having a great variety of directions in the various sheets of the crystals; in the case of fracture by unidirectional twisting, these lines are parallel to the plianes of the clear cleavage. Likewise, surface d ge to mica specimens affect neithek, the endurance nor the location of damage. It is noted that more cracks and finer cracks are formed on mica plates in active media than in air. Abstract: The introduction of species of trees and shrubs into the dendrarium Ctree and shrub gardenj of the Arkhangel Wood Technology Institute began more than 20 years ago. The dendrarium. soil was cultivated to a depth of 60 cm, ,md below this, turf was laid out in a deeper stratum of more than 2 meters; the pH of the soil was 6-7. The spe- Card 1/2 USU/Cultivated Plants. Introduction and Acclimatization. Abs Jour: Ref Zhur-Biol., No 5, 1958, 20209. cies were cultivated for the most part through seediiag. A number of species were sawn in hotbeds or in bins, put into place, and gradually acclimatized to the severe climate. Those species are listed which had frozen the first year, were strongly affected by frost, and were acclimatized. In 1955 two hundred species bore fruit. Several species (Acanthopana-x sessiLiflorum Seem., Corylus avellana L.) have been growing satisfactorily, although they do not bear fruit. In the majority of cases, the freezing of species diminishes with the plant's growth, and the ripening of seeds improves. OCCURRING AFTER REPEATED COOLING IN WATER (Russian telt) - Or 1 o v G. A. - KHIRURGIIA 1957, 6 (91-96) The-sy-nTr-omeof 'moist extremity' develops as a result of cooling in water. It is different to frost-bite, which is due to the action of 'dry' cold. There are several stages in the course of this disease. At the period of exposure to cold and moisture, in reactive and prereactive stages. inflammation and anoxia of the tissues develops, which aro due to disturbed innervation and vascularization. Later. vegetative neu- / ? 7 7 ritis and endovasculitis of extremities develop. The disease developed after re- peated cooling in water in 34 patients who were examined in the clinic. They were the water transport workers from the north fishers and floatage workers; in all of tKem it was connected with conditions of work. The early symptoms of 'moist extremity' in this group of patients were not pronounced. Certain prophylactic measures are suggested. Among them organization and mechanization of work, establishment of warm premises for drying. professional selection of suitable work- ers and periodical medical examinations.
