weak current 13 passed through the dilated temporal arteries. gradually increasing
the frequency. Such treatment Immediately alleviates the pain when there is local-

follow-up, It is claimed that the longterm results are excepti"ally satisfying.

studied in carbon disulfide, benzene. ethanol and wator. In the organic

Based upon 512 caset; of various types of syphilitic involvement of the CNS. dia-
gnostic. prognostic and therapeutic problems introduced by penicillin therapy are
discussed. Come control was based nn neurologic and CSF examinations. In 67% (if
the cases treatment was bai4ed on penicillin-G-procaine. Results with the penicillin
treated patients proved to be better in the late asymptornatic form of neuro-
syphilis. Actual designation of 'late asymptomatic neurosyphditt' is supported by
the results of penicillin therapy in this group. formerly referred to as the 'pre-
paralytic stage'. Penicillin therapy is recommended to be carried out with 6-9

In fifty cases of multiple sclerosis sheathing of the retinal veins was seen in 21
patients. In some of the patients, fresh infiltrations or organized sheathings could
be seen along the veins. The fresh infiltration depends primarily upon the acute
outburst of the symptoms of the disease but it may also precede it. As the retina
may be considered as the antertur portion of the brain. this periphlebitia is
analogous probably with the cerebral perivascular infiltration occurring in multi-
ple sclerosis. In 3 of the pat:ents with another diagnosis. the changes in the
periphlebitis retinae could be observed up to the point of their disappearance.
The diagnosis of ackerusis multiplex made on the thisis of the findings in the fundue
of the eye was confirmed by the neurologicai findingii. In case of periphlebitill a
diagnosis of intilliple sclerosis can therefore be considered. Orbin - Budapest

Report on 21 patients with malign.~nt turnotirs of the rhinopharynx. These tumnurs
are sensitive to radiation; early diagnosis is therefore important. Invasive exten-
sion of the turnour can cause exocranial and endocrantal cerebral nerve daniagt .
In case of exocrantal damage the turnourn prow toward the front: penetrating
through the pterygropalatine fosoa into the orhitn; downwards-. into larynx and phnr-
ynx; towards he poslerlor It causes syndromes of the posterior cerebral nerves;
sideways it reaches the retromandibular space. Endocranial damage is Caused by
upward growth of the turnours through existing cavities, e. g , foramen laccrum.
or immediately through the destruction of the skull bones. The most frequent lo-
cations in cases of metastases are the groups of retropharyngeal and deep lymph
glands in the neck. The frequency of cerebral nerve symptoms in these 21 cases
are described - as is the frequency of cerebral nerve syndromes. Diplopia. tri-
geminal neuralgic p&ins. 9-ndromes of the sphenopalatine ganglion, auriculotem-
poral nerve, trinmus, glos sopharyngeal neuralgia and isolated atypical cerebral
nerve syndromes with or without swelling of the lymph glands should be taken Into
account by the neurologist for diagnostic purposes. Early diagnosis depends on co-
operation between neurologist. laryngologist and radiologist.

Colobma of the ro"r eyelid is often associated with macrostornia and sometimes
with benign or malignant turnours in this region. A 38-year-old man is described
who resented macrostomia, coloboma of the lower eyelid, and harelip. A tUMOUT

ABSTRACT: This Is a continuation of earlier work by the authors (FTT
V. 7*11926, 1965) and is devoted to an Investigation of frozen acids
m4 alkalis exposed to x-rays and ultraviolet 77K. A large yield of
stabilized hydrogen atoms was obtained in I an4 HC1 and was investi-

hydrogen.atom depends on the concentration of the acid In the aqueous
solution. The splitting of the hyperfine structure and the g factor
of the stabilized hydrogen atomr, were determined from the paramagnetic
resonance spectra with the aid of the Breit-Rabi equation. Other acids
,tested were HBr,, HI., and HNO J, and the alkalis tested were NaOH, KOH,
RbOH,,~ CsOH,, and NH40H. The results indicate that the properties of the
stabilized atoms are governed principally by the basic element of the
acid-(Fa 01, etc.), and that the presence or absence of oxygen does not
exert a noticeable influence. Certain acids exhibited no dependence
of the byperfine splitting on the concentration (HF., HC1,p HCIO 011
probably because these acids are obtainable only at low concentrations.
:The g-factors of stabilized and frozen hydrogen atoms In the acids
turned out to be equal, within the limito.of experimental accuracy, to
those*of the perfectly free atom. The differences between stabilized
hydrogen and silver atoms and the mechanism of formation of stabilized
hydrogen atoms are discussed. Some of the experiments were performed
