Data on th~~: angular distribution of positively and negatively charged pions show prac-!
tically no asymmetry. This 'may be due to the fact that the principal trans~it~Lons ~
which take place in the production of these mesons at 600 Mev are the (Sp)-trainsition
in Opl and the resonance (Pp)-transition in the partial cross section o11; which take
place it-de~:~endently. The total measured cross section for production of bath types of
pions is (:i..3t0.2)�10~~2~ cm2 which does not contradict the relationship betweEan the
cross sect:~.ons based on the hypothesis of charge invariance and may be used for de-
termining ~~;he crass section for production of ~-mesons i~~ nucleon-nucleon collisions
with a total isotopic spin of : , A _ fa.7 ~ t~) , ~~-zT~Ns . A comparison of the value found
re
for Q~wA wa.th oT~l = (10.10.6)�10 ~~ cm2 shows that the effect of nonresonanc:e transi~
tions cannot be disref;arded in phenomenological models of meson production in nucleon-
-nucleon collisions in spite of the predominant part played by resonance processes.
