ABSTRACT: Together with specialists of the food industry, the authors have
developed a method for processing rabbit pelts with acid-salts on a production flow
line. An acid and salt compound is used which permits a dry treatment of the
pelts. The composition and application of the compound are described in detail.

used for mixing the compound, and also other units of machinery of the production
flow line. The authors conclude that this mechanized pelt presevation method
should be widely used in all rabbit processing enterprises as it win improve the
quality of the pelts, raise the production volume and improve the working condi-
tions of those presently engaged in manual processing of rabbit pelts. The authors
estimate that the introduction of the new production line in Kuban plants alone will
save about 45000 rouble per year. Orig. art. has: 5 figures. JGCJ

ABSTRACT: The standardization of photosynthetic radiation measurements in the sea
is the main problem to be solved by the SCOR-UNESCO Vorking Group No. 15. This
standardization requires that the results obtained should be expressed In energy
units. This standardization can be achieved In tvo ways: (1) by direct measure-
ments of energy using thermopile detectors such as hydropyranometers, perhellometers,
etc.; (2) by applying the results obtained by the use of photoelectric detectors
(different types of hydrophotometers) for energy computations. The low sensitivity ofl,
the thermocouples and the great range of spectral sensitivity are the main defects of'.
the first method, whereas the difficulties of converting light units to energy units -
decreases the advantages of the second method. The use of a standard coefficient for
the latter purpose (as Is proposed by some authors) does not yield adequate results,
which becomes evident from a comparison of the coefficients obtained at different -
depths and in different types of water. A more precise way Is to use Yerlov's optical
cladsiftcation, but this requires some Improvements. Use of Yerlov's tables makes

it necessary to standardize light measurements In the spectral sens'ativitY Of the
detectors. Working Group No. 15 has recommended a further improvement In the methods
of both direct measurements of energy and its calculation using dat on Illumination.

TEXT: This paper is a preliminary report on the production and electron-
microscopic investigation of monocrystals of isotactic polystyrene and
polypropylene. It was found as a condition for the formation of monacrystals
that crystallization takes place above the vitrification temperature. There-
fore, 0.01 - 0.059% solutions of the polymers were heated to boiling in
xylene, and cooled in a Dewar-vessel system for 2-3 weeks. In the case of
polypropylene, trichloro ethylene heated to 87 0C was also used as a solvent.
As a second variant, the polystyrene solution heated to 110 0, was applied
to a hot collodion base, and crystallization took place by evaporation of
the solvent. Monocrystals with a size of up to 100 4 were observed in the

electron microscope. The polystyrene crystals showed a fibrous structure.
The fibers were directed perpendicular to the longer diagonal of the rhomb,
the c-axis was perpendicular to the base surface. Crystals of a laminated
9tructure were formed in the case of polypropylene crystallized from
xylene, rhombic crystals, however, from trichloro ethylene. A preliminary
electron diffraction study showed that the molecular chain in these crystals
had a similar folded conformation as had been found in other polymers.

TITLE: On X-ray Photography at Low Temperatures (0 rentgenografi-
rovanii pri nizkikh temperaturakh)
PERIODICAL: Zavodskaya Laboratoriya, 1959, Vol 25, Nr 5, p 618 (USSR)
ABSTRACT: In the present investigation the standard X-ray camera RKD
(Fig) w&s used for taking radiograms at temperatures of liquid
nitrogen or oxygen. The adjusting arrangement and the micro-
scope stage were exchanged for a plexiglass cylinder (fastened
with the adhesive BF-2). A Dewar vessel is then put into the
cylinder, and the liquid nitrogen is filled i-.to the vessel.
In contrast with another type of construction (Ref 1) the
sample-is in the present case in direct contact with liquid
nitrogen; this method permits also the investigation of materi-
als of very low heat conductivity. The camera modified in such
a way is successfully used for the purpose of investigating
crystal lattice deformations in rock salt and metal powders.
