AIJSTRACT: At t1he 11II Stroykeramika different fritted and non-fritted
glazing3 have been examinei. Fritting has been effected at
temperature~j ranging from.1250 to 1300 centigraden in
accordance vith the coating composition and the following
granulation of the malt in water. The frits examined had
different transparence. All frits without damper and frits
having a zirconium content ranging from 2 to 54 were
trDnaparent. Frits having a higher zirconiiAm content rt finnl

zirconium, which produced a slight dimmiine. damping of

On Replacing Tin Oxide in 0--oaq~ie blazes by Zirconium (0
zamene oklai olova v glukh1kn eLizuryakii tairkonom)
Steklo i keramika, 1959, Nr 8, pp 27-32 (USSR)
In the present paper the t)y zirconium and tin oxide in
different fr4.ts is investig-Led. The initial compo3itiors of
the frits examined are contained in the table. The temperature
interval and the 4e~7ree of 0-X'.c'.'L't-.Y found for frits of different
composition tire griven in rigure 1. Translucency was examined
by means of tin apparatus dosigi~ed at the Institut stekla
(Glass Insti-:ute)tYootnote 1). The composition of the crystal
pnase of tri,:s and glazes was studied b7 rbntgonoCraphical
methods by the scientific collaborators of the MIS troykeramika
T. 3. But and V. Al. Vitokhina. Furthermore frits with different
zirconium contents are being examined. Figure 2 gives the
logarithms o:r the translucence of piates as a function of their
thickne33es "or frits of different composition. The favorab.L6
infl.uence of B203and fluorine-containinp,, compounds is also
confirmed by the findings of Academician it. V. Belov kPootnote 2).
On Replacing Tin Oxide in Opaque Glazes by Zirconium SOT/-12-5y-o-10/1 -1
The dependence of the ~.quantity and size of omr4ixe crystals
on the frit temperature without silicon fluoride is represented
In figure 3, with ailioon fluoride in figure 4, and for the
same frit with 2.3% SnO2 in figure 5. The viscosity of the
frits and glazes investigated were measured# within the
temperature range of u50 - 13200, by means of an apparatus
developed at the H113troyteramika, an can be seen from the
papers by R. A. Lipman, R. I. Mazo, Z. A. Nosova (Footnote 3).
The opaque capacity of the glaze's increases as the grain size
of zirconium decreases. Translucence indexes are given in figure6.
0o'nalusionst The research done shows that zirconium Iski no way
Inferior to tin oxide with respect to the degree of olytaity in
fritted easily fusible as well as In non-fritted refractory
glazes. The use of zirconium as a damper stabilizes the glazes
and makes then cheaper. For glazes with product burning temper-
ature of up to 1,2000 it is recommended to use in addition of
r-
as fluX. With non-fritted glazes with a product burning tempo
ature of 1,200 to 1,3000it is recommended to cruch zirconium
and to add about 1.5 to 2 times as such as tin oxide. Taore are
