TITLE: Effect of neutron radiation on r~' stallizatignof uranha -c SOW=: AN SSGRi Daklady, v. 165, no. 5, 1965, 106S-1060 TCPIC TAM neutron Irradiation, uranium, metal recrystallization, metal heat treatment ABSTFACT., The recrystallirtation process w&s studied in natural uranium as a func- tion of neutron Irradiation. The specimens were 99.82% pure with a digmeter of 12 rn and a length of 70 va. The neutron intensity was 2-1013 neutrons per c=2. The irradiated uranium rods w-are cut into sectors 4-5 mm thick. Recrystallization in these s- pecimens was studied by tLicrontructural and x-ray analysis and macrohardness measumients. Phot=itrographs are given showing the structure of uranium "ci- mQns; suhjected to 50% deformation as a function of annealing temperaturt and holding tAne. Curves are given showing the hardness of def-xvmd 1-911-0 C UDC: 539.04 Card 1/2 L 1.1867-66 ACC HR: APS002426 annealing temperature before and after Irradiation. Before irradiation, the spoci- mns show a reduction In hardness at a temperature of about 5000. Irradiated ura- nium shows a sl.~ght reduction In hardness (by 20-30 kg/mm2) in the 450-1000 region. and a considerable reduction (by 60-90 kg/=2) at temperatures above 6000. The first raduction in hardness Is apparvntly caused b, .1 annealing of radiatior harden- in& defects, while the second is due to recrystallization of the deforrstd specimens. It ia ftmd that irradiation by neutrons raises the temperature and retards the pro- cems. of re crystallization in deformed uranium. The values for the logarithm of the activity coefficient of copper (igIc"), the partial heats, and the aurplus entropies of the mixing of copper are also shown In table 1. Table 2 shows the corresponding values fcr bleauth. The values for electrodes with a copper cont lint V~ 0-701 vere found by extrapolation. Figures I and 2 show graphical description of the partial and integral heats and the mixing entropies. The system Ca-BI differs conclderably fron Raoult's law. The differences decrease with rising temperature. The t;4,~ki melts are formed ander heat absorption, the mixing heats being considerably high. With equIatemic composition their maximum to 1600 kcal/g-ate. The considerable positive differ- enoes of the entropy fro= the ideal values are characteristic of Ca - 31 melts. This fact is explained by the great difference of the atomio vclugsina of the two corpon4nts. The conductivity of the compound undergoes a change from impurity-type to Intrinsic (see Fig. 1).
