The present paper is based on the results obtained by other investigators who
found that anointing the skin of mice with a lanoline solution of methylcholanthrene
only rarely induced neoplasms; when, however, the saine site of skin iH anointed
with a betizene soluti(in of methyleholanth7ene the neoplasins appeared carlier and
more frequently than in mice not treateJ previously with methylchulanthrene,
Therefore, methylcholanthrene penetrating -mith lanoline into the body 'sensitizes'
it to tnetti.ylcholanthrene administered in berizene. The authors wanted to find out
whether the sensitization mentioned involves only the part of the skin painted with
methylcholanthrene or also other tissues. Fhe skin of mice of the group I and It
was treated with a 0.3% lanoline solution of Tnethylcholanthrene, the group H being
additionally injected s. c. at another site with I mg. of the same carcinogen in 0.5 .
ml. of oil. Group IH was given s. c. methylcholanthrene only. In group I only 2
neoplasms were found (carcinoma and papilloma which changed into carcinoma).
the number of experimental mice being ncot given. In group It out of 113 mice 14 de-
veloped skin neoplasms at the previously sensitized site: papillomas which became
carcinomas, and carcinomas. Group III showed no skin neoplasms, but here again
the number of mice used is not mentioned. S. c. sarcomas occurring at the site of
injection were found to appear earlier in mice in which the skin had previously
been painted with the same carcinogen in oil, than in mice not treated with this
compound. This suggests that the sensiti2.ation involves not only the skin at the
site of painting with methylcholanthrene but the whole body. In the next experiment
the authors treated the skin once a weelt for 5 weeks with one drop of 0.5176 benzene
solution of methylcholanthrene, then they discontinued the treatment and resumed
it again after 8 or 114 weeksr interval. Control mice were treated a imultaneousty
with experimental groups after 8 or 14 weeks' interval. It was found that papillomas
and carcinoma3 appeared earlier in sensitized animals and that the 14 weeks' in-

ABSTRACT: In order to develop reliable lase4Nr use as optical pumps in various
solid state devices, the performance of 6 different Ke lamps was studied. Lamps
having straight, and cylindrical spirals and flash energy output between 2CO to
2000 joules were studied. The speetral distribution, light intensitys and.
electrical resistance of the laqjs were determined. The reaull;s are presented
in tables and graphs (see Fig. 1), It is concluded that the observed saturation
of radiant energy F.A in the region of 900 for the lamp P-4W (400 mi lig Xe) is

794 persons employed in dairies and creamertes were examined for brucetlasts by
agglutination, CF and Burnet teste. In 20.3%. positive results were found. The
number of people showing positive results increased in proportion to age, and to
the period of employment. This may thus he considered an occupational infection.
In none of the persons examined was active brucellosis found. The commonly used
'brucellin PD'-preparatton gave satisfactory results with no strong allergic reac-
tions, in mass -application of the Burnet test.

PURPOSE: This work is a romplete course on the theoretical elements of
electrical engineering. It was approved by the Ministry of Higher
Education of the USSR as a textbook for electrical engineering
faculties and institutlon3 of' higher education.

Coverage: In. this first special attention is given to a de-
tailed examination of electric and magnetic phenomena and to the
establishment of' interrelations between the magnitudes characterizing
these phenomena. The book presents In detail. a study of linear and
nonlinear electric d-c circuits, of magnetic circuits and electro-
magnetic Induction and of' energy relations. The unity existing be-
tween electric and magnetic phenomena is emphasized. The electric
and the magnetic fIeld3 are studied separately only in exceptional
cases. The alithors start from the exposition of the electromagnetic
field as an aspect of matter.

are anal~,sed and methods of calculation of these circuits are presented.

lics of a-c circuits and of the phenomena occuring in them; network
calculation by the use of complex quantities (method introduced by
Steinmetz and applied in Russia by the Academician V. F. Mitkevich);
voltage and current resonance in electric networks and in coupled
circuits; four-.terminal networks (quadripoles) and chains of networks;
the rectangular and circular tran3MISSion-line charts; multiphase net-
works; nonsinusoidal periodical emf1s, voltages and currents; reactive
coils and transformers; transient phenomena in networks with lumped
characteristics distributed constants of a line under steady-state
conditions; transient phenomena in lines with distributed constants;
nonlinear a-c electric networks.
