ABSTRACT: The ionospheric reflection coefficient wc~s continuously recorded, day
and night, during the mo:ath of the eclipse {February 1961 by a network of observa-
tion stations {Central and Southeastern Europe) 9.n a frequency range from 155 to
6037 kilohertz, with oblique incidence of the electromagnetic wave. Behavior of the
lower ionosphere could thus be studied comprehensively at the time of the eclipse
(15 February) and during a control period lasting from 20 days to a month. Measure-
ments of the reflection coefficient of medium and long waves in the lower ionosphere
at the time of the eclipse afforded an opportunity to discover certain signf.ficant
~ peculiarities in the method of determining differential and total absorption in the
