Abstract At a number of oil fields Intensive locaiized corrosion
of pipe lines occurs due to the fact that a mixture of pe-
troleum and underground water, and natural gas containing
C02 (UP to 32%), and 50met~mes aiso 112S (0-03 - o.o4%)
are flowing throupfi them to the sttling tanks and separa-
tor under a pressure of 2.5 atmospheres. Collector pipes
made from St.2 steel developed -orrosion holes w-ithin

6-8 months of operation. To study the effect of gases,
4issolved in ground waters (hard and alkaline), on rate
of corrosion (RC) of steel at elevated pressure, tests
were conducted with apecizens held on glass supports vi-
thin an enameled steel bomb. Water was Introduced Into
the bomb, to d1splace the air, and pressure of 4.8 aw-
16 atmospheres was produced therein by the use of car-
bon dioxide. In some of the experiments the water was
first saturated with air of H2S and the pressure was
then produced with C02' The experiments revealed that
Increased pressure and presence of C02 do not Increase
RC of steel in alkaline ground water, and increase it
somewhat in hard underground vater. Increase in pressu-
re, from 4 to 16 atmospheres, has little effect of RC.
Tn the presence of H-S and C02 some steels underEp sub-
surface corrosion, wfih formation of bulges and blisters,
evidently due to evolution of hydrogen ard its diffusion

sufferts under the effect of aromatic hydro:arL60C. The corrosion rate of St.3 steel solutior, /ithout in-
hibitor and-cathodic protection was 50.4 _o1m21hr A-no aadition of 0.4 g/1 of fur-
.furolimino decreased the corrosion rate to 7.31 gm21hr without cathodic protection.
'Thc combination of furfurolimino inhibitor with cathocdc peotection increased the pro-
Itcctivo effect of the inhibitor (oven at an ineffective concentration of it) from a
'Corrosion rate of 7.3 to 0.25 g/m2/hr (i.e. 30 times grnater in the presence of eathod-
iic protection, with a density of the polarizing current of 50 milliamp/dm2). The in-
'hibiting effect of furfurolimine was related to the deceleration of electrode reactions

TOPIC TAGSS corrosion inhibitor, tensile strength
ABSTRACTS A study of the tensile strength of U?A steel wire (diam. 0.? m..) in a Sys-
tem consisting of hydrocarbons (benzine, kerosene or Detroloum) and 0.1 N HC1 with
and without inhibitors was made at MGPI im. V. 1. IAnin. The system studied ar)t)roxi-
mated t~he conditions of steel corrosion in gas condensate W6113. It was found that
the water-soluble inhibitors Katapins and P8 8/2 at 200C in systems consisting of
hydrocarbons and acidic aqueous solutions docrease the corrosion rate by about 50%
and less. For this reason, they are not sufficiently effective inhibitors. However,
as the temperature of the medium rises to 500C, the effectiveness of Kat&pin Increases
markedly. This is*dus to the fact that in the presence of movement, the stream of
