processes under conditions similar to those with ignition of luminescence
tubes, without a startor, and determined the dependence of the velocity
of the ionization front on various conditions. At first, they describe the
experimental arrangement (circuit diagram - Fig. 1), and discuss the
method of measurement. The tubes had diameters of 15, 25, and 38 an , and
length@ of 47. 88, and 120 ca, respectively. and sere filled with chemical-

ABSTRACT: The range of plasma parameters in which strata of a posi-
tive column can exist is considered qualitatively and is represented
by a closed surface in the space of -he parameters R, I, and p (R --
tube radius, I -- discharge current, p -- pressure)o When any of

is disturbed and the interaction between the growing waves with dif-
ferent wave numbers results in stationa,y waves which constitute
the strata. Conditions under which sinusoidal, relaxation, and
negative strata are produced are analyzed from the point of view of
the variations of the parameters on going through the critical points
in various regions of the critical surface. The need for further ex-
perimental research is pointed out. "The authors are grateful to

ABSTRA,-r: In order to investigate the transition of the positive column of a gas
discharge in a magnetic field from the condition of current-convective instability
that obtains at magnetic field strengths close to a critical value to the turbulent
condition that prevails at much higher magnetic field strengths, the authors have
recorded with probes the oscillations in the positive column of a hot cathode helium
discharge In a 3.1 ca diameter 180 cm long tube in magnetic fields up to 6 kOe ex-
tending over 120 cm of the length of the discharge tube. Three 12 mm long 0.3 mm.
diameter molybdenum probes were mounted at different points on the axis of the die-
charge tube, and two similar probes were mounted at different distances from the axis
opposite two of the axial probes. The spectra of the signals from the probes and tho
-correlation functions of the signals from different pairs of probes were recorded.
Twenty-six of the recorded spectra and correlation functions are presented graphically

and are discussed at some length. Three types 01 oscillations were distinguisiled:
current-convective oscillations with a discrete spectrum, which appeared as expected
at the critical magnetic field strength and behaved In accordance with the theory;
low frequency oscillations with frequencies of a few kilohertz associated with propa-
gation of waves from the axis to the wall of the discharge tube, the propagation
velocity being 3 x 105 cm/sec at a magnetic field strength of 5.6 kOe; and oacil-
.1ations with frequencies of several tens of kilohertz, which first appeared when the
magnetic field was slightly inclined to the axis of the discharge tuba and was of sucJ1
a strength that the Ion Larmor frequency was approximately equal to the Ion collision
frequency. Possible causes of the different oscillations are discussed. Orig. art.

to ordQred c-inins of vacancies and that during the anneal the number of ordered v2-

on the whole agrees within the statistic limits witri the exFeri-

intensities are given in table 1 together with the data of other
authors. The difference in the intensities in certain domains is
to be explained by inexact work of the "electron" under its old
wofting conditions. The last works performed witri *he source of
Eu brought about a considerable clearing up of the isotope
decay of Eu152 and Zu154, but it was not yet possible to con-
struct a final scheme of the decay of these isotopes. The values
on the relative intensities of the X-lines, which were obtained
by the authors, together with the values obtained by other author
make it possible to determine the multIfields of the ~--transi-
tions (table 2). There are 2 tables, 7 figures and 48 references,

LBSTRACT: In the introduction of this paper, it is pointed out that most
*spectrometers work with inhomogeneous magnetic fields, and
that their resolvi power in different (half-width of the
lines 0.05 to 0.061) and their light intensity is low
(aperture ratio 0.01 to 0-08 % of 410. The purpose of the
preBent paper Is to develop an A-spectrometer with a m"ving
power of 0. 10 % at an aperture rat I o of 0 - 3 % of 4 jr - Lri the
first part of the paper, the experimental arrangement
(electromagnet with its screening and current supply,
evacuation plant, accomodation of the radioactive sources, as
well as the geometrical oontrol of the at.-ray) is described In
detail, and supplemented by figure I (pole shoes) and figure 2
(chamber). The second part deals with the measurement of the
axial-~yam trio magnetic field. This focusing angle in indicated

spectrometers of this typo have the most favorable relation
between resolution and light intensity. For the axial component,
an equation is given in which the coefficient 1~ determines the
focusing properties of the field. The influence of the
nagn1tudo of 0 on the width is discussed, and the measurement
of the topography of the magnetic field by means of a rotatable
coil is dealt with. These measurement results are shown in a
diagram (Fig 3). Another diagram shows the topography of the
magnetic field in dependence on the position of the screening
rings on the pole shoos (Fig 4). The II.-particles are recorded
by thick nuclear photoomulsions. The last part deals with the
determination if the characteristic of the oJestrometer. It was
carried oul with a Po 210_ source, and the half-width of the
lines amounted to 0.1 %. A variation of the solid angle did not
show any influence, and the variation of the half-width of the
line caused by a change in width and height of the source
followed theoretical formulas of a previous paper (Ref 10). A

ABSTRACT: The Introduction mentions a paper by F. Amara who detected
three a-groups of U 233 by means of a magnetic a-spectrometor
of the sector type. In the following L. L. Golldin et al.
showed in an exact investigation of the a-spoctrus of

cated, and it to ascertained that the last throe of the@*
lines cannot be calculated by the known formulas for the in-
toneity of the a-transitions. In 1958. the authors carried
out investigations of the a-spectrus of U 233 by means of the
a-spectrom*t*r described in the first paper of thin issue;
theme investigations pernitt*d a more accurate determination

kBSTRACT: It was noticed that the carbon dioxide gas shows the
intensive absorption band in the infra red end cf the spe--
trum and therefore the thermal -adiation of this gas repres
ents a significant factor in the general radiation of -,he
atmosphere. The purpose of this work is to determine the
transmission function of the atmosphere at the 15 V band of
the spectrum and to apply this function for the determinat-
ion of the relationship of the thermal radiation of the car-
bon dioxide and its concentration. The band 15 ~L is the only
one which takes a part in transfer of thermal radiation The
determination methods of the absorption in this band were in-
vestigated by various authors; some of the results are Kiven
in Fig.1, where the relation of the absorption to the quan-
tity of C02 is shown. A function (1) caLn be derived for

these results. However, the formula (2) could be applied in
the general case, where (Pi) and (P F) are ttie transmissian
functions for the direct and d;-ffuse radiation respectively
(6 - angle of zenith). It is possible to determine the
value P for every u but the author cDnsiders that a
better m9thod could be applied based on Eq.(3) where tne
diffusion coefficient 0 could be considered as equal to
-1.80 for the la-rge values of u. For the small u (razir, ing
from 10-2 to 10-3cm), the value of 0 becomes variable.
Therefore the calculat, ons could be based on Eq.(2) for tne
exact value of P F ' a-nd on Ea..(3) for its intermediate
values. The result of the cal-ulatiin is stiown in 2abie I
Eq.(4) can be applied for tne calculation of the coeffi,:ient

ABSTRAM. The design of Blotted sieves and the choice of dimensions
of working rods are discussed and the technology of their pro-
duction is described. It is concluded that due to a large
sieving area and high strength, as well as lack of tendency to
blocking and a large wear tolerance, slotted sieves possess many
operutional advantages: large throughput, long service life and
minimum losses of beneficiation products into slurries. The
existing design and materials of construction of the sieves are
not considered to be rational; stamped rods should oe replaced
by rolled ones and brass b.y carbon steel with increased anti-
corrosive properties or stainless steel. There are 2 taLles
and 5 figures.
