ABSTRACT: This article deals with an open-circuit supersonic wind tunnel of reduced
proportions, constructed at the Institutul de mecanici aplicati (Institute
of Applied Mechanics) and put into operation on April 1, 1957. It con-
slats of a collecting funnel, a Laval nozzle, a testing chamber, a
diffuser and a compressor. The air is sucked in through the collecting
funnel from the laboratory room and, passing through all parts of the
wind tunnel, is exhausted to the exterior of the building. The Laval
nozzle, the testing chamber and the first section of the diffuser are
located in a rectangular tunnel with the internal dimensions of
163 x 50 mm. The upper and the lower walls of this tunnel consist of two
steel spars, held together by four steel plates, located on either side of
the spar ends. The side walls consist of two 22-mm thick crystal windows,
1,340 x 160 mm each. All parts are fixed by screws or studs and nuts,
provided with a special rubber packing set. The collectLig funnel and the
Card 1/4 diffuser are made from 3-mm welded steel sheets. The compressor, equipped

with a handcontrol. lever, has been taken from a "Jumo-211" a1rcraft
engine, and has two hydraulically controlled speeds: 21,120 rpm and
29,760 rpm, in function of an engine revolution of 2,400 rpm. It Is
driven by an asynchronous electric motor with a nominal power of 125 kw
at 1,460 rpm. The power transmission from the electric motor to the
compressor is accomplished by V-belts, including the necessary revolution
increase from 1,460 rpm to 2,400 rpm. The compressor and the electric
motor are Installed on a common support. The lubrication of the compressor
Is accomplished by an oilpump located in the gear housing, which pumps the
lubricating oil trom a container assembled on the foundation near the com-
pressor. Emptying of the oil pump and repumping of the oil Into the con-
tainer is accomplished by a separate pump, driven by a small electric
motor (1.7 kw at 2,9DO rpm). The motor is started together with the com-
pressor driving motor. The lubrication circuit of the ~!ompressor has been
slightly modified. Cooling of the lubricating oil Is not necessary. The
following measurings are being performed during operation 011pump
pressure, oil temperature in the container, revolution of the driving
axle. A pressure gauge and a tachometer are assembled directly on the
Card 2/4 compressor. Remote Indicating electric pressure gauge, thermometer and

tachometer are assembled on the starting panel of the electric motor.
The Laval nozzle, consisting of three straight and one curved walls,
guarantees an even and uniform supersonic motion in the testing chamber.
The straight walls of the nozzle consist on either side of the Internal
sides of the crysta.1 windows and on top of the internal side of the
girder. The curved wall consists of a wooden block. The first section
of the diffuser has been built in the same manner as the Laval nozzle.
An 8-mm projector is being used as a light source. The wind tunnel has
been computed for flows up to a speed of 2.2 Mach. Based on the calcula-
tions, the author has achieved in the experimental section a Mach Number
of M - 2.2, the power consumed by the electric motor was 1.02 kw, the
atmospheric pressure was 750 mm Hg and a temperature of 240C Together
with N. Cimirisescu the author has conducted a series of experiments with
differently shaped models. Various experiments have been conducted with
the compressor, determining the following values: compressor ratio,
overa.11 efficiency of the compressor installation, compressor efficiency,
output, static pressure, power absorbed by the electric motor, etc. The
results of these determinations are shown in graphs. The maximum achievable

Mach Number is M - 2.28, In a 108 x 50-mm section and a consumed power
of 94 kw. The maximum achievabie section Is 153 x 50-mm, at a Mach Number
of M - 2.1. and a consumed power of 128 kw. The author then gives the
different values of sections attained with different Mach Numbers.
Finally, the author examines the construction possibilities of a large
wind tunnel, operated by a group of compressors, The values of the three
most advantageous compressor combinations are shown In graphs and tables.
