The data on the temperature and pressure dependence of thermal conductivity
for normal alkanes (from methane to octane) can be generalized by means of
existing theoretical and empirical formulas, but the applicability of these for-
mulas is limited. In order to obtain a satisfactory generalization for alkanes,
the authors used the known expression

TEXT: The heat conductivity of n-hexane, n-heptane and n-octane
in the liquid and gaseous states within temperature range 20- 3600C
and pressures of I - 500 kg/cm2 was measured. In the neighbour-
hood of the critical point, X is strongly dependent on p and t.
For inotherms near to the critical point, and also close to the
critical pressure, maxima of heat conductivity were observed
extending over a narrow range of pressures, which can presismably
be explained by the occurrence of a convective heat exchange in the
gap between the cylinders of the bicalorimeter. For determining X,
the regular temperature variation method was used. A detailed
description of the bicalorimeter and the experimental method is
given. Corrections for the temperature distribution within the

instrument, by considering t1jo cooling of the internal cylinder
placed into a thermally insulated external cylinder under boundary
conditions of the second kind, are described in detail. The
equations are derived assuming a constant temperature of the
external cooling medium (X m A , a m X,) . In the above
bicalorimeter, comprising two coaxial cylinders with the gap
between them filled by the gas or liquid under investigation, the
external cylinder acts as thelambient medium for the investigated
layer and for this cylinder X has a finite value. Therefore,
instead of the measured value of the rate of cooling mmeas, it
is necessary to substitute in the equation the real value of m
and it is the magnitude of this that is determined when solving
the problem. 14 references.

PURPOSE AND COVERAGE: This book is intended for geologists, geo-
chemists, mineralogists, chemists, engineers. metallurgists,
economists, and specialists in other fields of science and tech-

the geology, mineralogy, geochemistry, and chemistry-of scandium,
etc., will be published in a separate bibliography. The book covers
the chemistry of scandium and scandium compounds and scandium tech-
nology with particular accent on its use in such modern fields as
aviation. rocketry. and electronics. All references to the use of
scandium in the field of aerospace are based prLmactly on U.S.
military and industrial sources. ScandLum research trends are
given in Table 20.pp. 94-95. Better utilization of scandium in
modern technology is expected.

Abstract.*- of w6tal- workers showed that -they were" unsuccessful Ltv
~jjwashing tungsten from their hands after wock. The authors developed a
1,cleansLng paste-on the basis of OP-10, a surfA e-actLve mixture of mono- and
dialkylphenyl enter@ of polyethyleneglycol. paste also contains buffering
'and barriar agents. It has the following composition: 47.3 g of OP-10;
3.5 g of a 3% M&OH solution; 7,0 g of glycerin with a specific weight of
7.0 g of paraffin and 35.0 g of water, Directions are given
.ifor pmparing the paste, which has no allergenic, sensitizing, or irritating
:Jeffacts and does not love its effectiveness in storage. Washing with the
vasta, redutes the presence of tungsten on vorkers' hands to traces.
