TEXT: The.equipment used for these measurements during the
IdY at 10 different points of the Soviet Union is described. It
is capable of measuring the relative time during-which the value o~
the envelope of the atmospheric noise exceeds a given level-; this:

dt(En E) is- an elementary time increment 'during which the value
-of the noise is greater than the given level. A second quantity
which can be measured is the average cross-over frequency NI(E), Y
i.e. the average number of times the envelope of the noise inter-
sects a given level. The equipment can also measure the quasi-
~Pealc values of the noise field. The system comprises a non-
resonant rod antenna, 5 m long, its characteristics,being almost
constant at frequencies up to 10 Mc/s. The antenAa can be regarded,
at this frequency, as consisting of a capacitance of 100 pF and an
inductance of 1.8 ItIl. The antenna is followed by an amplifier, a
control desk, a rec eiver,a nois a-analyzer,a recorder and a standard signal
genorator. All thofjo unitm nro doncribed in 'nomo dotail. Tho
antenna amplifier is provided with 9 different filters at its input,
covering various frequency ranges. Type P-674 (R-674) receiver,
..whose bandwidth was 6F= 500 C*P-s-, was employed for the frequency
range 12 kc/s - 1 Nc/s. The receiver for the frequency range from
2-5 - 10 Mc/s was P-250 (R-250) having a bandwidth of A.F = 1 kc/s.
The equipment was calibrated by an audio and.ultrasonic generator
up to 100 kc/s, while above that the signal-generator, type

f-CC-6 (GSS-6) was employed. The analyzer was an instrument,
-type iNn-28 (AP-28), which permitted measurement of the distri-
bution curves P(E) and N(E) as well a*s determination of the
4uasi-peak values of the noise. The equipment ;as used- to measure
the noise at various points of the Soviet Union, Btarting at 00 h

the Prisalairskaya group of rayons), the foot hi" s and
the Gorno-Altayskaya (an autonomous oblast'). Groups of
rayons are further divided within these zones. Types of
crop rotations are presented for the individual zones and
rayons, and the economic tendencies and specializations
are sketched. Consideration is given to problems invol-
ving the development of animal raising in the zones.

ABSTRACT:
~ descriptiattl is given of the LIU-3000 linear induction accelerator, which
was desigW 1~tfi3 Scientific-Research Institute for Electra-Physical Devicee
(HIIEFA) in ~962. The LIU-3000 was designed for an energy of 3 FAv and a
pulse currents of up to 200 amp. Ito operation for electron acceleration is
based on the lutilization of a rotational electric field, created in a
system considting of several circular traquformors. The maximum possible
current of tqa accelerated electrons In such an accelerator with focusing
sufficient t4 compensate for the repol1ing force of the'space charge, in
determined ba~aLcally by the power of the co=uting olwmt in the primary
circuit of the inductor. The LIU-3000's power can be brought to
1000 MV/pul , what Is impossible In other types of acceleratom The

LIU-3000 conaPta of a series of accelerating sections .(the first of which
was adjusted P 1963). Each section consists of 12 inductors which are
vacuum Gealedl to permit a vacuum of 5 x 10-6 torr inside. The sections are
connected in pirs into units with the aid of special pipes. Purping and
obGervation d1vices are situated between the units. The following data
were obtained1from testa: maximum current of accelerated electrons, 180 amp;
maximum energy of injected oloctrone, 300 kov; energy of accelerated
electrons, 481 kov; duration of the current pulse of the gun, 2.2 usec;
pulse duration of the accelerating voltage, 0.35 liacc; duration of the pulse
front of acceprating voltage, 0.18 psoc; average gradient of accelerating
field, 310 kvim; and diameter of the accelerated beam (at the exit). 2 cm.

Determination of the solubility of polyethylene in hydro-
carbons and of the dynamic viscosity of the solutions
obtained

TEXT: It was the purpose of the present paper to investigate the solubility
of polyethylene in various solvents, the dependence of the solution tempera-
ture of polyethylene on its molecular weight and the concentration of the
solution, as wel:l as to measure the dynamic viscosity of the solutions
obtained and their filtering velocity. The solubility of polyethylene was
determined from the turbidity of a solution of given concentration during
observation in transmitted light by means of the device, developed by
V. N. Dyn1ko, whose schematical drawing is shown in Fig. 1. The polymer
weighed portion is conveyed into the steel container 1 and, after the

addition of a measured quantity of solvent, the lid, which is sealed by
fluoroplast, is closed. The tightness of the apparatus was checked with
the gas valve closed by increasing the nitrogen pressure to 7-8 atmospheres
excess pressure. From an ultrathermostat, the heat-transmitting medium is
conveyed into jacket 9, the valve is partly openedv and the solvent and the
polymer are mixed by means of bubbling-through N2' The temperature was
measured by means of a thermocouple, which was connected with a-portable
potentiometer; the measuring accuracy was �0.50C. The light from lamp 10
passed quartz windows 7 and incided upon the mirror 8 from which it was
reflected, The solution obtained was 20-250C above solution temperature;
when the solution was cooled, a distinct turbidity occurred, which continued
to increase with dropping temperature. The temperature at which the first
slight turbidity occurred was taken as solution temperature. The dynamic
viscosity of the polymer solutions was measured by means of the Heller

error is 3~6. The density Of DOlyethylene was determined in the laboratory
of B. I. Sazhin. The solution temperatures of polyeth,-flene, obtained by
means of CrO 3- catalysts, in various solvents are given in Table 1. With an
increase of temperaturep the solution time of polyethylene in hydrocarbons
decreases, and when polyethylene concentration in the solution is changed,
also the temperature of the quantitative dissolution changes (Table 2).
With increasing molecular weight of polyethylene, its solution temperature
increases linearly with intrinsic viscosity. The temperature.dependence
of the concentration of low-molecular polyethylene rhich remains in solu-,
tion when cooled, is shown~by Fig. 4, the dependence of the dynamic viscos4
of the polyethylene solutionsin synthol on the intrinsic viscosity is shown

ABSTRACTs The tasks confronting the State Geodetic Supervision are
described in the present paper- Whereas in the first years
of its existeneie the main task was that of control!ing the
application of the rales, an additional important task con-

expenditures in the production of official topographic-Secdetic

progressive methods under one or another protext. It is
requested in the present paper that surveying an the ground
be allowed only in those cases in which aerial photography is
not possible because of determined reasons- Many organizations
aim at going about their tasks in the easier way and their
accounts contain incorrect and illegal data. Financial
estimates are sometimes in excess of 30-40 %6~ The Departments
of the Supervision do not sufficiently control completed
works, usually only as much as 30-50 %- Cutting of expenditures
for topographic-geodetic works also depends on the revision
of the official norms being in force at present. The scales
in surveying are to be defined a.~curately, in consideration
of the high costs: 1 km2 on a scale of 1 : 500 costs up to
80,000.rubles, on a scale 1 : 1,000 up to 40,000 rubles, on a
scale 1 ~- 2~000 up to 209000 rubles, on a scale 1 : 5,000
up to 8jOOO rubles, on a scale 1 1 10,000 up to 4,000 rubles,

ABSTRACT: Although the geological enterprises and expeditions of the
Soyuzmarkshtrest (All-Union Mine Surveying Trust) have slightly
improved the realization of topographic-geodetic work in recent
years, there are still some considerable shortcomings to be
found. They are pointed out here by means of some examples.
Progressive methods are not being applied, topographic-geodetic
surveys are carried out separately from geological prospectingv
or often in places where no geological investigations are
planned. The extent and cost of work are often unreasonably in-
creased, and a larger scale than is necessary is often used in
the surveys. Considerable shortcomings are pointed out in the
setting up of technical projects for aerial surveys and topo-
graphic-geodetic work. Most striking is an excess of markings.
The quality of work does not always correspond to the specifi- V

and time of work are also toleratod in the realization of
geodetic work for geophysical prol3pecting. The inefficient
supervision of this work by geological and geophysical insti-
tutions is finally pointed out. The Ministerstvo geologii i
okhrany nedr SSSR (Ministry of Geology and Mineral Protection
of the USSR) and the Glavgeologiya RSFSR (;4ain Geological
Prospecting Administration of the Russian Socialist Federative
Soviet Republic)_took in 1959 a number of measures to eliminate
the mentioned shortcomings in the topographic-geodetic work.
Some examples are pointed out here. A joint out4ard meeting of
the sektsiya geologii i poleznykh iskopayemykh Ekspertne-geo-
logicheskogo soveta Minist6rstva geologii i okhrany nedr SSSR
(Section of Geology and Minerals at the Geological Experts'
Council of the Ministry of Geology and Mineral Protection of
the USSR) and of the Ekspertno-geologicheskiy sovet Glavgeo-
logii RSFSR (Geo'logical Experts' Council of the Main Geological
Prospecting Administration of the Russian Socialist Federative
Soviet Republic) was held in Leningrad in June 1959- It was
