nium In electric fields with intensities from 0.5 to 2.1 kv/cm. Curves are given for
the variation in the hole absorption cross section an a function of wavelength at a
latticat temperature of BOOK, and for modulation of the incident radiation an a fune-
tLon of Its wavalsq1th. A maximum Is observed In the 3 v region, and a minimum In
the 4 v region, ?Mae extrams correspond to a reduction and increase respectively In
the ty - waittaws of germanium due to transitions from the heavy hole band to the
cleavage-band, A third peak In the neighborhood of 4.7 p Is caused by transitions
from the light hole band to the cleavage band, and a fourth near 8 P is the result of

ABSTRACT: Established formulas and graphs are used to calculate shielding in areas of
high radiation. Two main components of radiation are discussed: bremsstrahlung ar.(-'
the neutron radiation originating in the photoproduction of neutrons. It is concluded
that the shielding requirements for photoneutrons should be compared with the shield-
ing necessary for the bremsstrahlung. If the two are equal, a half thickness of the
shielding should be added to the thickness computed for either component. Orig. art.
