TITLE: On the connection between modern concepts re,~arding the earth's crust and the

ABSTRACT: This is a review article showin,~, on the basis of the accumulated explor-
atory data, that the geological structure of' the Eztunian valleys Is such as to in-
dicaLe a close connection between the ernsional and accurTiulntive action of the rivers
and the contemporary movements of the earth's crust. The geological constrijction of
north Estonian valleys indicates a general uplift of the earth's crust, which Ifl
particularly revealed In the intenvive rivej-hed cronion t)vcurrin~! in the! ()W('T* COurfie
of the rivers. 'Min 1B observed in the 1(,nt~iLud1nnl pruflLe of the rivers, the
spreading of the anomalous sections, the frequency of' !)-shape transverse pr. fileti of
the valleys, and the thickness of the a'..Iuvial sediments. In the .7Liddlp and upper

geological data with the distribution of anomalous sections of the revers of the
Parnu river basin proves the existence of a sadale bend represented b-f a criinn zone
which probably moves in the shape of bl.)cks. This crush zone Is general-1.) traceable
in the regional distribution of anomalous sections of rivers, representinF, a NE - 3W-
directed zone. In the lower course of the ri;;ht-sided tributaries of the Parnu rivtr,
the alternations of the velocit, of the contemporary movements of the earth's crust
cause a river-bed erosion in the named re,~jon, whereas in the left-sided tributaries
they call forth an accumulation. The aLluvial deposits of the lower courses of south
Estonian rivers are of a relatively great thickness; the rivers here have a small
gradient, and anomalous sections are missini.,,. These facts point to a general rela-
tive sinking of the earth's crust which keeps on in the lower courses of those rivars
that flow into the Peipsi and Pihkva lakes and Into the south part of Lake Vortsjar-v.
abe formation of the anomalous sections in the middle courses of the south Estonian
rivers is mainly connected with the ancient relief. [Author's abstract]. Orig. art.

Technical aluminosilicate was treated with NaCI soln and A
with sodium acetate sol. The activity of the silicate as a catalyst was then testeed
and compared with that of a silicate treated with NaOH soln. Sodium ion was found
to have a suppressing effect on the catalytic properties of tne silicate, but this
effect was not as pronounced as that of alkali. Present&d by Acad A. V. Topchiyev

,rhe exchange cipacity of silica gel for Al ions was tested. It Is doubtful
that the Al ion displaces an H ion in the mechanism since silica gel has a greater
affinity for the H ion than for the &I ion. it Is more nrobable that there is an

TITLE: The ro ]-- of nupport in chromium oxide polyrner izat iort
catalysts
PER IU D I CAL: Nefto-khimiya, v.~_', no.5, 1962, b81-687
TEXT: The author aimed to elucidate the effect of the nature
of supports on the activity ot Cr 03 catalyst, Alumina, silica gel,
silica-alumina and pumice were investigated as the supports. The
oxidizing capacity of the supportq with deposited Cro-j (b. ,,,) was
determined by the degree of their reduction with benzene at 1'iU*C.
CrO3 an silica gel and silica-alijmina had the greatest oxidi7ing
capacity (67-89- and (30.5,- reduction with benzene respectLVely),
but on pumice and silica-alumina treated with 0.2 N NaUH, Cr 03 had
zero activity. Silica-alumina with various amounts of deposited
A1203 were also studied as the supports. The activity of the
catalysts was determined by the yield of polyethylene. Ethylene
polymerization was conducted at 140 OC and 40 atm, for 10 min,
using n-heptane as solvent. The content of A1203 giving the
maximum yield was 3.059. The increase in the activity of CrO3,

real ized by its depom it i(in on -41 licn-a Itimina or s i I ica gel, is
explained by the f orma t ion of coord t na t ing bonds between Cro ~ arid
surface Si atoms. This causes a shilt ol electrons in CrO3
oxygens towards S1 atoms, which increases the oxidizing capacity
Of CrVI. CrO3 forms aluminitim chromate on the surface of s i I ica-
alumina, which adheres strongly to the support surface and
inc-reases the activity of' the deposit6-d free Cr03- An Pxcess (,)I
A1203 in the support causes the formation of some loosely bulind
aluminium chromate whi-ch is less suitable as a support for CrU5.
The stability of silica-aliimina-CrO) catalysts increased in the
presence of the polymer. of the investigated supports, pumice
does not stabilize Cr03 which is transformed to Cr?-03 at
330-500 oC (catalyst activation temperatures). Small amounts of
Cr03 (1-2~o) on silica gel do not decompose on heating to 3oo oC,
but for increased amounts of Cr03 some decomposition is observed.
it is conclijded that the active centreB in the catalysts are
Crb+ ions and not Cr5+ am indicated by p. Comsee and
L. van Reijen (Actes du Deuxi~me Congres International de Catalyse,

gaynovskiye (f = 0. 82, 1 = 1033130") and the values of mean inclination of the
ecliptic to the earth equator and the mean longitude of the escending. node of the
lunar orbit for the 1964 apoch have been calculated. Difficulties arise in the
composition of ephemerides of' visible star places in connection with the changes
of rho and sigma components of the physical libration. The daily ep .herneride of
visible places of only 12 stars comprises 8760 coordinates. The authors,
therefore, 'imit themselves to the calculation of reduction values (the orbital
velocity of the moon is taken into account) and of reduction constants for the
stars selected. Ephemerides of visible places of the Sun and of Jupiter have
been made. It is suggested that it will be convenient to observe Jupiter in order
to determine the latitude and longitude on the moon. It is porposed to measure
time on the moon by lunar stellar days, the beginning of which is the moment
of upper culmination of the visual point. Transition tables from the systems of
lunar time to systems of mean terrestrial and stellar time have been calculated.

ABSTRACT. A hydraulic device for determining hardness, also of inTer-ior sur

made from a hard alloy with an a-ngle of 136 0 serves a-8 indcri*,or.
The determination of hardness is carried out in the same wa.,, ;oi ry
means of the Vickers testing device. By using connecting jai;ket5

The indentations made by the indentor are examined by means of a

(000;9 0*075t Oel M), Figure I on the
1holosure shown the oil pressure distribution around the shaft in the aiddle of
the bushing at n - 509 100p 200p and 400 rpme The pressure distribution on a
rectilinear development of the shaftle circumference at various rpm is shown on
Figures 2 and 3 on the Emolosure for clearances of 0*10 = and OeO5 m respectivaVe
It has been observed that oil seeps out of the bushing and lubricates the shaft
only in areas of negative presaureo The second series of tests (500-1000 rpm#
clearance - 0*05 =9 25% porosity of the bearing) showed that oil seeped out at
the outer surface of the bushing only in areas opposite those whom the oil
pressure in the clearance was high* A flow of oil from the high pressure area to
the low Manure area occurred only when by-passes along the outer surface of the
bushing were provideG Them@ were filled with oilq thus creating an additional a
supply of lubricante Origo article hams 6 figures*
