ABSTRACT: The author points to the need for the simultaneous progress of both th
industrial- engineering design of a shop and the operational design of
equipments to be adhibited therein, especially in the case of non-
standard equipment, in order that experimental equipment units be
completed and ready for testing coincident with the completion of the
shop structure itself.

TITLE: Upsetting pipes
PERIODICAL: Kuznechno-shtampovochnoye~proizvodstvog no- 4) 1961, 13-15
TEXT: The article describes a method of upsetting thickened end sections of pipes
for excavators. The method of upsetting pipes both in a calibrated ring and with-
out dies was submitted in 1955, and is under development at the NIIPTMASh (Krama-
torsk). The NIIPTMASh in conjunction with NKMZ have tested 299 x 12, 299 x 14, and
180 x 12 mm dimension pipes for excavators for which grade 20 or M steel with no
more than 0.14 C, 1.3-1.7% Mn, 0.3-0.6% si, 0.15-0.4% Cu, 0.01-0.03% Ti, 0.3% Cr
and Ni, 0.045% S and 0.04% P, were used. The device, mounted on a lathe frame,
compriseds a working tool, a wedged mechanism with hydraulic drive for clamping
down the upset pipes, a hydraulic drive for feeding the pipes and a device for thei
coordination of pipe and inductor feed. It is stated that (1~ the mechanical pro-_
perties and fiber texture in the upset metal did not differ from the initial metal;
(2) the metal ain microstructure could be controlled by the temperature of up-
setting and Ofit was possible to upset pipes with a 2-3 fold wall thickening in
a single operation by a continuous step-by-step method. Candidate of Technical

TEXT: The utilization of technical oxygen considerably increases the
effioienoy of.the flame of high-capacity open hearth furnaces, and the in-
jection of oxygen into the furnace increases the quantity of heat developed
by the chemical reactions. The author examines the following three factorsi
1) Enrichment by oxygen of tbe flame of open hearth furnaces. The oxygen
is injected into the furnace by two nozzles installed at the ends of the
furnace. Reference is made to the advantages and disadvantages of the oxy-
gen injection. *The turbulent fuel gas-air and oxygen mixture begins to
form itseli. AcQentuated vibrations are observed in the center of the
flame, but the character of homogeneity is present. At the end the flame
is undisturbed. The turbulence of the flame produced by injecting the oxy-
gen intensifies the thermal radiation currents towards the molten metal,

without substantially modifying the thermal radiation currents towards the
vault. The temperature of the flame in case of gaseous fuels can be com-
puted by the following thermotechnical calculust the lower caloric power
of the fuel - the heat necessary for dissociation + the sensible heat of
the fuel + the sensible heat of the air + the sensible heat of the injected
oxygen, is equal with the total heat of the burning gases at the theoreti-
cal temperature of the flame. This relation has to be solved by successive
attempts. A tf theoretical temperature of the flame is admitted and the
average molar specific heat at a constant pressure as well as the dissociat-
ed fractions corresponding to these temperatures are taken from the tables
of physical constants. By injecting oxygen into the flame, the quantity of
nitrogen blown with the air into the furnace is considerably reduced. The
author then determines the real temperature tr of the flame and the exit
gas temperature te Of a 400-t open hearth furnace in case of using common
coke oven gas, blast furnace gas, mazut, methane and gas mixture, as well
as all these types of fuels enriched by oxygen in various proportions, i.e.
21~6, 42~6, 63%, and 100% 02. By injecting oxygen into the open hearth fur-
nace the temperature could be considerably increased-. 21% Of 02 proved to

be the beat proportion, since a 42, 63 or 100% content has led to very high
temperatures and with that to a considerable.stress of the furnace, as well
as to a too high oxygen consumption. There are 2 sets of figures, I table

PERIODICAL: Metalurgia ?i Construc~ia de Ma;ini, no. 11, 1960, 971 - 977
TEM The article is the second part of a paper, the first one of which
was published in Metalurgia i Construc~ia de Magini (Metallurgy and Mechanical
Engineering), no. 10, 1960, 957 - 864. The flame temper~Lture of an open-hearth
furnace can be increased by injecting oxygen. The maximum thermal loading has to
correspond to the charging possibilities of the furnace, i.eq, the charging has
to be accelerated with the increasing capacity. Based on the Stephan-Boltzman
formulae, the total quantity of heat transmitted by radiation can finally be com-
puted by: Q, - 1. 0, a, SK .5 , in which Qr is the heat quantity transmit-
ted by radiation, in kcal; 91, the proportion of heat quantity obtained through
radiation by the receiving surface; 1Tr the apparent radiation coefficient of the

.1,600()C is obtained-by the relation: (2c). Table 2 compiles the dum-
tion of heating and melting periods of t 0 in a 400-ton open-hearth furnace.
The maximum thermal capacity of an open-hearth furnace is generally limited by
structure and section of the fOrnace, the draught of the installation, the caloric
power of the fuel, the preheating possibility of the air, the resistance of the
refractory set, and the physico-chemical condition of metal and slag. The ratio
between the necessary quantity of oxygen and the voiume of the burned gases (0V
/Vf) is the analysis criteri-bn of the combustion. The 02/Vf value increases with
the 02 percentage. In case of oxygen injection, the thermal load of the furnace
can be increased for a certain period or subperiod of the melting process, by in-
creasing the quantity of the introduced fuel and the corresponding oxygen. The
oxygen Injector has to satisfy some requirements, i.e., the connection of the ox-
ygen conduit to the automatic flame reversing system, full control possibility of
the oxygen delivery and jet trajectory, the heads of the nozzles have to be pro-
tected against the harmful etfects of the high temperatures, the presence of an
additional thermo-technical'checking device anc~ the location of the nozzle should
guarantee a good oxygen-fuel mixture. In case of mazout the oxygen is injected
into the steam used for the atomization of the mazout. Conclusions: 1) By en-'
riching t~he burning air with 21% of oxygen, the flame temperature is increased by

350 - 4000C. In case of 42, 63, or 100% of oxygen the temperature can.be in-
creased by additional 170 - 2000C in function of every interval of oxygen per-
centage. 2) The highest efficiency is achieved with an oxygen content of 20 -
30%, injecting the oxygen into the gas stream or atomized fuel. 3) In case of
using 21% of oxygen, the heating and melting time is reduced by 50%. 4) The exit
temperature of the burned gases is increased in proportion to the enrichment of
the air by oxygen. 6) The high temperatures obtained by oxygen injection require
a revision of the thermal properties of the rRfractory lining. 7) The average
consumption has to ~e limited to 120 - 140 Nm?O per 1 ton of liquid steel. 8)
In case of a high content of scrap iron or solid cast iron, inspite of the high
flame temperature, the temperature of hearth, slag and regenerating chambers Is
not higher than in case of burning without oxygen. 9) Injection of oxygen direct-
ly into the flame supplies good results. 10) The oxygen enrichment reduces the .
length of the flame. 11) In case of oxygen injection the CO concentration in the
open-hearth furnace Is reduced, but the C02 concentration attains a maximum vake.
12) The 02/V[ value is improved with the degree of the oxygen superfeeding. At
an enrichmen by 21% of oxygen, it attains a value of 0.235 and by 100% of oxygen
a value of 0.54. 13) The changing methods have to be improved. 14) The refrac-
tory lining is stressed by the oxygen enrichment, but also by the dust produced

during the burning process. Special measures have to be taken to suppress the
dust which appears in great quantitites, :L.e., 15 kg of dust per 1 ton of liquid
steel. - Enriching the flame of the open-hearth furnace by 20 - 30% of oxygen,
the productivity of the furnace was increased by 7 - 25%, and the fuel consump-
tion reduced by 10 - 25%. The consumption of oxygen with an 80 - 85% purity de-
gree Injected With a pressure of 7 - 12 atm was generally 130 Nm3 per 1 ton of
