ABSTRACT: There is a description of a computer for introducing corrections for the
mean refraction in the position of the telescope during Its tracing a
luminary. The corrections of equatorial coordinates of the star for the
mean vefraction are expresged in the form of erati.=3:

the pole-zenith-star triangle. A cardan mechanism has been developed consisting of t1go
hinge-connected rods, the angle between which Is equal to the zenith distance of the
star, while the turn of shaft A (see diagram) relative to the stationary ring of 'lie
bearing reproduces the parallactic angle p. Rod A Is fixed to the tube of the telescope
and rotates in bearings G, and 0 always remaining parallel to the optic axis of the
telescope. The end of the seconi rod bears the weight Di forcing the axis of the'joint
to always occupy a horizontal position. The main diagram of the mechanism is given,
using sine-cosine rotating transformers (SCHT). It Is pointed out that, bocaune of
smaller dimensions, fewer momenta of friction and the convenience of working with an
alteimating current, the use of the SCRT is preferable to the U3e of functional potentio-
meters. The position of the telescope is corrected by transmitting the valaes of r. and
r6 by the motors Mi and M 2 through shafts of the Cardan mechanism A and C. This mZthod
of introducing corrections for the refraction is to be used in a reflector with a mirror
diameter of 0.7 m now being constructed In Pulkovo.

ABSTRACTi There is an enumeration of the requirements which must be met by the
material to be used for anaotronomloal mirror. The author considers that
beryllium masts most of the requirements In the beat way. A mirror made
of beryllium Is 3 times lighter than a mirror made of Pyrex, quartz, chrome,
or aluminum and 10 times lighter than a steel one. The rigidity coefficient
of beryllium Is by 16.2 and the heat conductivity by 4 times greater than
that of stmel. With an Identical diameter a beryllium mirror can be made
either 2.4 times thinner than a mirror made of quartz, Pyrex or aluminum, or
the load system can be simplified. Two samples of beryllium were examined.

TEM The conference held in Moscow on April 18-20, 1961 was devoted to
new techniques in astronomy, involving new designs of telescopes,control
systems, astronomical instruments, photoelectric light receivers. A
report dealt with the new reflecting telescope imeni G. A. Shayn recently
set up in the Krymskaya astrofizicheskaya Observatoriya (Crimean
Astrophysical Observatory). B. K. Ioannisiani, chief designer of this
telescope, reported that the main mirror was 2.6 m in diameter (relative
aperturet 114). Correction systems provide relative apertures of lo2.6
to 114 and a tolerable field diameter of 21 to 25' in the main focal point
to enlarge the field of view. V. V. Oshurko reported on the procedure
followed in producing the main mirror of this telescope. Factory tests
made by the compensating method of D. D. Maksutov indicated a high surface

Zhurkin, G. L. Bruk, V. M. Konshin spoke on photoelectric tracking
instruments. V. B. Nikonov reported on experiments and observations made
possible by the telescope. Electron-optical reproduction made it possible
to observe stare of a magnitude of 19.5 at an exposure of 2 see. Yu. S.
Streletskiy described, on behalf of a team of designers, a modernized
mounting-type of a 700-22 telescope of the Glavnaya astronomichaskays
observatoriya Akademii nauk SSSR (Main Astronomical Observatory of the
Academy of Scienoes USSR) at Pulkovo. D. D. Maksutov spoke on the
original optics of an astrometric meniscus astrograph to be built in the
Soviet Union for use on the southern hemisphere. Telescope control
computers are being developed at the Institut elektromekhaniki (Institute
of glectromechanias) in Leningrad. V. A. Naumov recommended a system for
the automatic evaluation of observation results. A. P. Kundzin' reported
on an original automatic stellar electrophotometer with program control
developed at the Astrofizioheskaya observatoriya Akademii nauk Latviyskoy
SSR (Astrophysical Observatory of the Academy of Sciences Latviyskaya SSR).
L. A. Keamfomaliti described an autcmAtio electropolarimeter which was set
up at the kastumanskays, astrofizichoskaya observatoriya (Abastumani
Astrophysical Observatory) for preparing lunar polarization charts. N. M.

Shakhovelcoy spoke of a stellar electropolarimeter developed at the
Crimean Astrophysical Observatory. Studies of the infrared part of the
spectrum have been conducted by the A8%ronomicheakiy institut im. P. K.
Shternberg (Astronomioal Institute imeni P. K. Shternberg) using lead
sulfide photoreaistors. At the same institute, P. V. Shcheglov used
small photocontact tubes to observe weakly emitting objects. V. F.
Yesipov used these tubes for apectrosoo and examined the relative
spectral line intensities up to 11,000 ly V. P. Linnik reported on a
slitless stellar spectrograph with guide, and on the use of Talbat's
ihterference fringes for the production of bench marks. V. N. Karpinakiy
used the grid twice in the photoelectric monochroma%or by deflecting the
rays into the oppoffite direction by means of a corner reflector. All
astronomical institution3 of the USSR are working on the development of
new devices to improve observation methods and to speed up the evaluation
of results. )Aeasures have been taken to equip astronomical observatories
throughout the USSR with improved modern instruments.

The error in SKIT-6, because of the play in transmission, eccentri-
city and so on, is much more pronounced. It appears that SKVT-6 must
be of the highest class of accuracy. The influence of Eai inaccurate
adjustment of the telescope with respect to azimuth and latitude is
equivalent to adjusting it on an arbitrary assembly with given coor-
dinates of the polar star A 1 and -1. The influence of errors in the
construction of the mechanism, due to the fact that the angle bet-
we6n the axes SKVT-p an3 SXVT-z can differ from a right angle by a
small quantity ~', and the angle oetween the axis SKVT-z and the di-
rection of the dine connecting the center of gravity of the load
with the intersection of the axis SKVT-p and SKVIA.-z can differ from
a right angle by a quantity ~e and the influence of errors in the
working Which consist in insufficiencies in the required positions
of the rotors LVT = r. and LVT = r8, are examined. Taking into
account all the possible errors of the sine-cosine transformers the

AB57RACT: A 700-m reflector telescope (callod the W4-700) has just boon built at
the Pulkovskaya observatoriya (Pulkovo Obsorvatory). It will be equipped with a
double control system. One aspect is a semiautomatic control from a key or with
one of two panels operating by semiautomatic control. The position of the tele-
scope will be computed on this panel, each coordinate having a double-motering
seiGyn connoction operating as an indicator. The hour nechanism will be a synchro-,

conditions at,which the alcohol-does not effect the quantitative Ni-deposi-
tion by the dimethylglyoxime. The investigation conducted at 20 - 220
shaved that the solubility of dimethylglyoxime, in organic solvents immis-
cible.with water varies somewhat depending upon the H2q content of these
solvents,, It was found that temperature produced no Effect on the solubiL-
ity o;.the glyoxime. Mine references: 7 USSR and 2 German (1907-1954).

Secondary cultures obtained from phagolysates of
dysentery bacilli were not very active. They could
be regenerated by repeated culturing on a nutriant

medimi. Secondary culture No 23 exhibited a common
antigenic structure with the initial strain. By
cross -agglutination, the mutual resemblan e of
antigenic structures of different secondary cul-
tures as well as of secondary initial straina
could be shown. The immune serum obtained by
4-2nizing rabbits with a secondary culture pro-
tected mice from lethal doses of the culture and
of the initial strain. Ani-Is i=ounized with the
initial strain we're more resistant to a homologous
culture than to-i3econdary cultures. Immunization
with secondary cultures did not assure complete
protection against the initial strain, while there
was pronounced resistance to homologous cultures.

Abstract : The author gives the necessary and sufficient conditions for the exist-
ence of a solution to the system of linear equations of the type Yajjxj
aio 2 0 (j=1 to n; i is betveen 1 and m) having a given sequence of signs.
He also solves the problem of the existence of such solutions for a sys-
tem of linear inequalities of the same form but vith the equality sign
replaced by the inequality sign. In particular he obtains the necessary
and sufficient conditions for the conjointness of a system of linear in-
equalities, which conditions are distinguished in form from known ones.
